Don't know why this guy is ranked so high and drafted so low.

" Matvey Petrov netted a hat-trick in his OHL debut to help vault the North Bay Battalion to a 7-4 win over the Peterborough Petes in their home opener."

Not bad for the kid's first game in North America.

I’m sure I’m not the only one who sees Holloway as expendable now. Especially considering how injury prone he is.

You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you can get a lottery pick.

Nice rush, but I really hope we didn’t draft that goalie as well.

Michael Simpson, Simmer as they refer to him. He’s yet to be drafted, is eligible this coming draft.

.877% and 4.05gaa in 27 games ... not great Jim. Looks like he’ll be an Oilers 5th round pick.

An off the board pick to create a Simmer/Skinner tandem.

So... I think we found the right hand shot for McDavid, and teh PP..
Holy crap! Freaking laser..

btw.. kid looks pretty tall compared to his team mates.. he's listed at 6'-2".. still growing?

Haven't seen any North Bay games.. haven't seen him skate.. but if he's NHL average I think we have a keeper.

https://mobile.twitter.com/OHLHockey/status/1502454629447213 057?cxt=HHwWgoC99c2h5dkpAAAA

.. I looked at that shot again.. I think he might have a snap shot better than anyone on the Oilers !

Yeah look at the slo-mo shot in full screen.. he snipes a 5"x5" opening, top corner, over the goalie's shoulder.. and it was super quick .. quick off the stick.. quick through the air.. barely see the puck streak on the slo-mo. NHL caliber.

Also.. snap shot

It will be interesting to see how many guys from the 2021 draft taken later will end up being real good players just because of covid and a lack of available games played in their draft year and limited viewings. Looks like pretty much everyone except McKeen's, had Petrov ranked to go in the second or 3rd round and the Oilers got him with pick 180 so the 6th.

JP is an enigma.

But it could be an indication of how serious a guy is about doing whatever it takes to improve as a pro hockey player in North America.. Only took Petrov a year to learn the language.

I think JP's biggest problem is his agent.. the agent got a 4th overall pick as a client and is choked he hasn't cashed in by now.. 10% on 1.2M is not what he banked on.

Languages come easier for some than others. I have a friend I played hockey with who is from Quebec and has been here for over a decade and his English is still not good. I have another who's very fluent and never struggles at all. Some guys are going to do better than others at it, and some need more help. Hopefully after their failures with Puljujarvi, the Oilers pay more attention to this with players they've drafted since and make it more of a priority in their development - even for guys still in Europe.

Biggest factor is how young you are when you start.
I doubt the Oilers never stressed the importance of learning English, but you can't force a guy to learn it, that's entirely the player's decision.. which you would naturally just want to do if you wanted to communicate with all your teammates, coaches, and just in general the people in the city you live n.

I think Petrov is even more remarkable since he had to learn an entirely different alphabet.

40 goals, 90 pts from a 6th rounder. I will take that! Scoring in junior is different than the pros but it's a start!

Another thing people tend to forget is he's still pretty young, only 19.. just turned 19 in March..
He's only 6 months older than Reid Shaefer.

He's going back to North Bay for 2022/2023

Guy couldn't speak English when he got here.. guy speaks fluently now..

Is that an insight into PoolParty's lack of give a damn?

JP is an enigma.

But it could be an indication of how serious a guy is about doing whatever it takes to improve as a pro hockey player in North America.. Only took Petrov a year to learn the language.

I think JP's biggest problem is his agent.. the agent got a 4th overall pick as a client and is choked he hasn't cashed in by now.. 10% on 1.2M is not what he banked on.

I was just surprised that his English was so bad when coming over, knowing how the education system in Finland generally teaches Swedish and English at an early age. It's not like when Kurri had to watch Happy Days just to learn English, or Tikkanen had to - well - okay he's still learning from what I see online, but either way it was odd to me.

that's interesting.. I knew English was mandatory in Swedish schools.. same as Netherlands.. but didn't know about Finland.. makes sense.. no one else speaks Finnish outside of Finland.. same as the Dutch, Swedes.. etc,,

According to this.. learning a foreign language has been mandatory.. starting in grade 3 (currently grade 1).. with the vast majority selecting English.. question is.. what happened to Puljujarvi? If the foreign language wasn't English.. then what is it?.. French? Spanish? Bizarre. Like I said.. he's an enigma.

Children learn foreign languages best in their early age: there is a so-called sensitive period for learning different languages during the first years of life. According to different scientific studies this sensitive period lasts from the birth to 6-8 years and starts to diminish around the age of 12 years. This fact has been the starting point for the current language program reform in Finland.

Finland has a long history of teaching several languages. To begin with, in Finland there are two official languages: Finnish and Swedish. Finnish is the language of the majority: about 90% of the population speak Finnish as their mother tongue. Swedish is the native language for about 5% of the population. All children in Finland study both official languages – Finnish and Swedish – at school.

Finnish is a very rare language. It belongs to the Finno-Uralic language family (related to languages like Estonian, Sami, Hungarian and Nenets) and is not spoken outside of Finland. It is fair to say that for the vast majority of citizens of Finland, it is vital to learn foreign languages.

Finland has been acknowledged for its rich language program for years. In addition to Finnish and Swedish, all pupils study at least one foreign language, most commonly English. The first foreign language has previously started on the third grade. Depending on the school and city, one has also been able to choose additional foreign languages on the fourth and / or on the eighth grade. The languages available vary in different cities and municipalities, but e.g. German, French, Russian, Spanish and Chinese / Mandarin can be language options. There are even more options to study foreign languages in Finnish high schools. It is not uncommon for Finnish high school graduates to have studied five or more different languages.

For a long time Finland has emphasized the fluent learning of the mother tongue (Finnish or Swedish) during the first school years and started the first foreign language only on the third grade. From this year on, the plan has changed and Finnish first graders start learning first foreign language on the second semester of the first grade.

I have a friend from Finland who came over for a semester during my university days. His girlfriend was one secondment, so he just came along for the ride. He said that they had a choice of English or Swedish as their secondary language and he chose English because he hated the Swedes.

Maybe it is three languages now, but A) who knows when that changed and B) just because you studied something doesn't mean you'll be good at it...especially something like language where if you aren't using it regularly then it's not going to stick.

I remember reading that Puljujarvi was living away from home since 14 years old. It's quite possible he was a pretty mediocre student, completely focused on hockey. I do think he seems to be doing much better now - although he may never be completely comfortable with it. Considering that English is the only language I'm fluent in, with some remnants of high school French and a scattering of phrases from a few other languages, I'm not going to cast a lot of stones on this. I was never comfortable speaking French, and needed to think through the translation of what I was saying or hearing every time. I will bet that there's a lot of people critical of Puljujarvi's English who don't speak any other language. Mark Spector likely among them.

Swedish is considered an official language in Finland (the other being Finnish), and doesn't count as a foreign language in school.

The requirement to learn a foreign language in school has been there since the mid 70's.

The article below says 77% of Finns can speak a foreign language and 69% more than one foreign language, of the foreign languages spoken.. 63% is English.

Foreign-language skills in Finland
The Finnish find that they are rather skilled in foreign languages, 77% in comparison with the European average of 44%. But what does it really mean to be skilled?

Could it be related to the practices, such as subtitles on TV ? The subtitles can encourage and make it easier to learn languages, and the respondents of the Nordic countries appreciate the subtitles (93% of the Finns), so this would mean that they are used to hear different languages on TV.

It is true that Finns are good in foreign languages, for in Finland 69% of the population can speak more than one foreign language, 47% at least two languages and 23% even three foreign languages. In Finland the foreign language skills are above the European average. The fact that in Finland there are two official languages has surely influenced the language attitudes. Anyway, the mother tongue of most Finns is Finnish (92%), so the country is more homogeneous linguistically than most of the European countries.

What foreign languages are the most common in Finland? It is not a surprise that nowadays English is the most common foreign language with 63%, Swedish being in second place with its status of official language (41%), while German comes in third place with 18%, being traditionally the most popular.
