Hearing Mike Smith is returning on a multi year deal to the Oilers

The very definition of insanity is doing the exact same thing expecting different results.

Generally Disappointed.

If they go $3m year 1 and $1m year two, with NO NMC or NTC, I can get behind it because at the very least, you can sell him going into next year or even at this years deadline to someone needing a backup at that price range and cap hit.

2x2 is fine. Either a cheap starter year followed by a slightly expensive backup year or two slightly expensive backup years.

This is stupid
Offer him a 1 year deal. His cap stays if he retires after 1 year. Knowing us it will be a full NMC too.

Be careful. Most of the posters here have self identified as male and implying they wear panties is the same as calling them a cross-dresser.
This is crossing the line and completely uncalled for!
Unless of course you were just talking about the female posters. If that is the case you are a sexist jerk.

/sarcasm for those that think I was serious. Well, except for some posters getting pissy over a panties joke, that part is totally true

Hearing Mike Smith is returning on a multi year deal to the Oilers

It's another interesting bet from the Oilers management. Smith was terrible as a 36 and 37 year old, and then bounced back for a very good 38 year old season...but do we really think that means he's going to be high performing for his 39 and 40 year old years?

It's possible it works out, but much like the Keith deal, it's a really bad bet. Low odds of success here.

So this is the flipside of my thoughts on Adam Larsson. Like Larsson, Smith was solid last season, and suspect the year before. Giving term here is a gamble as well, especially at Smith's age (Oilers seem to be going all in on players past their best before date).

The terms of the contract are okay-ish, but it comes down to this: I don't trust Mike Smith.

They really need to hedge their bets and find another guy for this tandem. And I really wish there was a younger, solid, up and comer both on this team and in the organization. Stuart Skinner is not that, IMO.

(Perhaps they could look at pulling Vitek Vanecek from Seattle?)

I felt the Smith situation was pretty tough. On 1 hand, while I know he's supposedly a fitness freak and is the type that is extremely motived to look after himself and compete, he's 39. There are always the odd exception but most athlete's decline. That's just life. So moving on from a 39 yr old make sense.

But on the other hand, he was pretty outstanding last year. A massive reason they made the playoffs. Supposedly he's big in the room. I watched all the games and to me it was pretty clear he's highly, highly regarded by the team and McD especially and seen as pretty important to that team. So I would think it would be a tough sell to the guys to tell them they are moving on from Smith after the year he had and the importance as a leader he seems to be to the team with the reason being "he's old so there is a chance he could decline."

Touch call in my opinion.

I don't think it's a tough call. offer him 2M and 1 year.
Do you really think any other team is going to sign him for more or longer? I think this is another scenario where the oilers held all the cards and threw the deck in the garbage.

Don't know what the final details of the contract are. Read there was interest from other teams based on how he played. Maybe that played into it.

Then you say thanks Mike but we aren’t comfortable giving term to a 39 year old. And then you take your 5M a year GM salary and work a little harder to find other options.

It was a miracle that he stayed healthy (post-covid) and played as well as he did. I have no doubt he'll be training as hard as he can, but older players get hurt. We saw him get tweaked a couple times in our short playoff series and everyone had to hold their breath because we knew Koskinen wasn't going to carry the load. Two years is a mistake, there was simply no reason to do it.

You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you can get a lottery pick.
