There's only so much the Dynamic Duo can do when your goalie gets hurt and coughs up bad goals as a result. Smith probably should have taken himself out of the game after getting hurt in the 1st, but he wanted to try to gut it out. Too bad it cost the game....

How much shame must the bottom 2 lines be feeling right now? Still 0 5v5 goals 12 games into the season.

Wouldn't it be way more fun to go back to having a bunch of big goons and face punchers on the 4th line. Guys trying to mix things up and taking late hits on guys all night. THey would probably score more than the current flaccid 4th line too :)

The first liner Kassian is the physical forward on the team. You can't ask a 3rd or 4th liner for that.

Thought it was pretty incredible that Josh Archibald played two extra games on a broken foot. Given how pathetic our depth has been, why did that ever seem like a good idea? Did the team (or the player) really think that we couldn't afford to be without Archibald for those two games? If these guys are borderline, then you don't push them back in hurt. That's ridiculous.

Saw this on Twitter;

The Oilers have 13 forwards who have combined to fill the bottom 7 slots through their 12 games this season. Those 13 forwards have a combined stat line of:

GP G A P +/-
84 1 5 6 -27

Top 5 being McD, Drai, Kass, RNH and Neal.

The team should be approaching panic mode on the bottom half of the forwards. I think it is time to start calling up players from the Condors. Bring up the top two who appear to be playing the most NHL ready game, sit the worst two current Oilers.
Those that earn a spot keep it, then repeat the process until you have the best 6 guys on the big club.
What is there to lose? Those who come up cant be worse.
I suppose they might lose someone on waivers but is there anyone that would be a major loss? Heck, I am willing to bet they all would go unclaimed.

The defense is the same. Nurse, Bear and Klefbom are doing their jobs. The rest are below good and sometimes awful.

Regardless of preseason hopes, nobody can pretend this type of play is sustainable and that the Oilers are actually a good hockey TEAM. They have 2 players dragging the team, 4 or 5 more not hurting the team and the rest are dead weight.

If one bad thing happens, injury or a drop in goal tending play the house of cards is coming down.

There doesn’t even need to be an injury situation- all a good team needs to do is to shut down Drai/Connor and force the rest of the team to beat them. The Wild and Hawks, both of whom are still languishing near the bottom of the conference standings, have already demonstrated this effectively.

Yep, this team is already in an extreme situation. They have figured out 29 and 97 are the 1-2 punch and if they nullify them, they win.

Management should start getting squirmy now.

The very definition of insanity is doing the exact same thing expecting different results.

That's an excellent question - maybe this is actually even strength not 5v5? I'm pretty sure the 4v4 goal against the Kings is the only goal scored when none of the big 3 were on the ice.

I didn't remember any goals from the defence without the big guys, so I dug in to it.

Six goals from defence so far:

Bear had 2 - 1st assisted by Nugent-Hopkins, 2nd assisted by Draisaitl
Klefbom has 1 - assisted by Nugent-Hopkins
Manning has 1 - assisted by McDavid
Nurse had 2 - 1st might be the one with only assist to Jurco. 2nd was assisted by Draisaitl

The Nurse goal against Los Angeles must be it. That's the one where Jurco made the nice little move on the defender and sent it across to him.

The Sh% will certainly rebound but man they could be helping themselves out a bit more by getting some shots on net from closer than Sherwood Park.

We saw this at play yesterday. I was at the game and we were commenting on the bottom guys just ringing the boards in the opposing zone. There was one shift in particular where the puck did the circumference of the attacking zone twice, before being given away. No one was even looking to put it on net.

I remember one sequence like that which ended with a Gagner penalty. At least 2 times the puck went around the boards, passed tto left D, Left D to right D, ring around the boards again, back to LD, full circle again, and then Gagner high stick someone as he tries to pass back to the LD again. Sigh....

Management knew it would be like this. Chia left the next regime nothing to work with. I give credit to Holland for not panicking, but trying to patch something useful together. I think most of us knew this season was going to be challenging.

This is fine.

Correct, most of us knew it would be challenging, save for the small group in the pom pom brigade. I also give credit to Holland for the change he has been able to make so far. Lastly credit to all of them for having the record they do, in the end all that matters is the points column

I do think though, even in a growth year, you owe it to the team to push to improve. My biggest worry in not moving players out of that bottom 6 is that complacency grows. Guys are just happy to be along for the ride and get too comfortable in their roles.
There seems to be zero improvement from the lot of them. Take Khaira as an example. He had a rough year last year and doesnt look good this year. What harm is done in sitting him down and giving someone else a chance?
Certain jobs (McDavid and Drai) are safe for obvious reasons. I want a team, regardless of preseason goals, that is always scrapping to earn or keep a job. The longer this team goes icing an almost identical lineup, and getting identical results, the worse it will be long term for the plan to build a competitive and winning team culture.

To be fair to Holland and the Oilers, I think they want Benson and Yamamoto to play in the AHL for a good portion of this year and so they're trying to stick to their guns on that, even as the guys here are floundering. The win-loss record has given the Oilers a little bit more latitude than they might otherwise have to wait a bit longer on this.

I do think that the optimism about the bottom six was always misplaced. The players they brought in had such limited track record that they were always just spins on the roulette wheel. Making a lot of long odds bets doesn't actually improve your chances of winning much.

I will say - there has to be some emphasis on taking shots and getting to the net though. It doesn't matter if they bring in one or two other guys - if they're all standing on the perimeter and just trying to kill the clock while they're out there, this isn't going to go well for us.

WheatNOil @WheatNOil
Here’s McDavid’s adjusted corsi with individual D. (Removing Benning, Persson, and Manning because they have <50 minutes with him)

Bear: 53.3%
Nurse: 50%
Klefbom: 44.4%
Russell: 41.4%

Ethan. Freaking. Bear.

More like, Kris MFing Russell.

I know we weren't blowing the doors off the league, but god has this team looked worse after they had to put Russell back in the top 4. Dude is the ultimate killer of pace. So much more opportunity for him to kill everyones chance to get to the offensive zone when he moved up from the 3rd to 2nd pair. Poor Klef is really struggling playing with him too. He's definitely worse this year than last. Gotta find a way to get rid of this dude.

Once again yesterday, Tippett benched Russell and Manning late and moved Benning up to play with Klefbom when the chips were down.

Benning didn't have a great game, but Manning was awful. And Russell...he's just in such a hurry to throw himself on the ice and take himself out of the play.

The worst is that I believe there probably HAS been a market for Russell. There's lots of those old hockey guys out there who believe there's a huge value from shot blocking and toughing it out and someone could be hoodwinked, but the longer we wait, the less chance that's going to happen. We have another full year after this with him too...Ugh.

But, no Russell = Bouchard

Maybe not, but the Oilers I know, hate, and love, would be on that, hard.

Without Russell, what’re we left with?

2015/2016 - This Kool-Aid tastes like McDavid flavoured Drain-O.
2016/2017 - This Kool-Aid is starting to taste like juice.
2017/2018 - I'm drinking this Kool-Aid, in hopes that it's Drain-O.
2018/2019 - Another round of Drain-O, good sir!

No Russell leading to Bouchard cracking the starting lineup could be addition by subtraction. It could also be good if Bouchard were to get a call-up that pushes Russell to a third-pairing role...

It would be really nice to have a right shot playing with Klefbom again. The coaching staff identified that Russell was weaker on his off-wing at the outset this year, but unfortunately, one injury in, and the cowboy is back patrolling the range from the wrong side of the ice.

Has there really been any updates on Persson?

I seem to recall we had a GM that we used to always compliment about how he was able to get some decent 4th liners. I forget who that was. Whoever he was, I wonder if he is employed right now, and if available if he could be brought back into the org to help out.

I am a little late to the party here.

Took my oldest to the game. What a lousy effort. From top to bottom they all were crap. The goalies made some good saves but weren't sharp. Each of them gave up a stinker. Struggled to make passes and take passes. Couldn't get shots through. Panthers looked twice as fast and I don't think it had anything to do with skating. I think it came down to the Panthers were just a second quicker in every last thing.
