MUST WIN!

Too early for that? Okay. Sorry. My bad. Just. Can’t seem to control the HYPE machine.

2016: We need to get heavier, and we need a defenseman!

2018: We need to get faster, and we need a defenseman!

Koskinen is a helluva goalie. Great signing.

I bet I could play in the NHL and save three out of four shots.

That D looks horrible.

Not to get too excited, but the forward group looks pretty nice.

But that's only because Rattie seems to have osmosis-ted McDavid's super human genes.

2015/2016 - This Kool-Aid tastes like McDavid flavoured Drain-O.
2016/2017 - This Kool-Aid is starting to taste like juice.
2017/2018 - I'm drinking this Kool-Aid, in hopes that it's Drain-O.
2018/2019 - Another round of Drain-O, good sir!

I am guessing this is the last we will see Aberg. He's don't nothing. I even wonder if this is the last we see of Caggiula.

I would have the top 3 lines like that, then I would have Khaira and Kassian in for Caggulia and Aberg.

Actually I have Chaisson ahead of those two bananas.
Agree on everything else.

That crew is our starting line up except for the bottom 3 pair on D, and the 4th line. Maybe Yamo, Reider, and Puljujarvi move up or down a line, but that looks like it.

I can't argue with you. The one thing bottom 6 guys need to do is fill a role somewhere else on the team. Win faceoffs, kill penalties, be physical, something. Aberg does none of that where as Chiasson can kill penalties. Caggiula can sort of play on your second unit PP a bit but ideally, he shouldn't be and he can't kill penalties.

I'm still not sure how the Oilers can bring on both Garrison and Chiasson. At one position, they probably have to hold the line where they are. Yes, they could put Sekera on LTIR and free up some space that way, but they wouldn't leave themselves any margin of error, and they'd be cramping the little space they have left for a deadline pickup if the team IS in contention.

If you can pick just one of those guys, who do you pick? I probably go with Chiasson personally...

I'd probably pick Chiasson as well. He can play a bottom 6 role, kill penalties, not a bad skater, big body. I just don't know what Garrison brings that they don't have already. Can Gravel come up, be your 7 and play the odd game. Sure.

They kinda need another warm body on defence. Even with Jerebek and Bear up, K-Lowe is your #8 unless you are absolutely, positively keeping Bouchard.

Agree, Chaisson over Garrison. Garrison is better than Jarebek, but if you can only keep one of the two, he can be replaced by Bear quite easily, and probably better, only problem with that is you don't want Bear going stale as the 7th D man, better off down in Condor-ville.

I think Aberg gets picked up somewhere on waivers. Maybe a trade with another team who knows they'll lose someone of similar caliber on waivers would be the smart move...

When can the Oilers declare Sekera's LTR status and get access to the cap space?

Drake and Pontus should be out, no question. They haven't done anything at all.

I've never really understood where the love for Drake came from... time to move on from that experiment.

The love for Caggiula stems directly from Chia's love for college guys. He was a harvard man, he must still owe his frat brothers and pledged to get some of the alma mater into the show.

As Skookum and RD mentioned earlier, I totally agree Aberg and Drake need to be sent down. I know we have no viable option, but I think Benning should be in the same boat. I just don't ever see a Stanley Cup championship caliber team having Caggiula and Benning on the starting roster.

I'm with you on Benning as well. Didn't think much of him last year, I'm just hoping he made some improvements over the summer..his skating was awful, short wide strides, all he did was push ice sideways...

Aberg and Caggi don't have enough speed and skill to be top 6, and not enough ingredients for the bottom 6.

Just tuning in after 2 periods.. whats the scoop? How's Koski looked?

Yeah, that first one against was PHX's first shot of the game as well. Koskinen has got some of the awkward slop out of his game from his first start, but geez it doesn't look like a guy that's battling for a #2 job that I believe he's playing his way out of.

Although have the Oilers even given Montoya a start in pre-season? They paid so much for this guy, they can't demote him without looking stupid. At least it was only a one-year deal...

IF he’s sent to Bakersfield... does that free up any cap space?

BIG game for the Big Finn in net. Bad game and its down to Baker

IF he’s sent to Bakersfield... does that free up any cap space?

Not really. You save about $900k off his cap hit, but then you have to call up Montoya so it washes out. Either way the cap hit for those 2 will be about $2.5M

Wins in a row the Oilers need to get to playoff pace: infinity
games!!

Maybe it was here, but I heard rumblings Toskinen has an out clause and can be loaned back to the KHL.

Here’s to hoping.

Koskinen is terrible. Flat out. Just not a good goalie.

Is this game televised?

2015/2016 - This Kool-Aid tastes like McDavid flavoured Drain-O.
2016/2017 - This Kool-Aid is starting to taste like juice.
2017/2018 - I'm drinking this Kool-Aid, in hopes that it's Drain-O.
2018/2019 - Another round of Drain-O, good sir!

Through 2, this game looks a bit last yearish on the part of some of the Oilers.

2nd line is fighting it in the preseason. Leon's game looks off, but dragging Looch around on your LW and having him kill plays can't help. I've seen 3 games of 2nd line centered by Leon, and it's just out of synch. Part of that is Leon, but the Oilers have to do better by him on the LW. I just don't know what we're going to see out of Lucic this year....fingers crossed, but he just doesn't have the agility, speed, or puck skills to thrive in the top 6 where you might need some of those skills. I just think at some point probably early in the season you've got to shuffle Lucic down in the lineup, barring some miracle and the second line starts to click. I think the best thing obviously for the Oilers is if Lucic can somehow start succeeding on the 2nd line and contributing on the PP, but I haven't seen anything so far to indicate that's the way it's going to go. I'll probably be as happy as anyone if Looch gets it going, I either want him to play better to help the Oilers, or play better to make him a player that another team might be willing to trade for.

I also haven't seen anything from Caggiula or Aberg in the preseason that would signal that they should make the hockey team.

Luckily the games don't mean anything yet.

LD and Lucic not looking very functional out there, not all Lucic, LD fighting the puck and decisions with it.

Lucic still making poor decisions. Gets caught from behind, makes passes that aren't close to on the tape, stickhandles in to traffic.

I've thought a couple times tonight that if Nurse could be better at EITHER shooting OR passing, that he could take a real step. Such a great skater, but his passing is pretty mediocre and his shot is a muffin.

And they still set up so that no one can get a clean one-timer off.

Maybe they are just keeping their real powerplay a secret so they can really stun teams with it in the regular season?

If the Oilers get good goaltending this year and Connor is Connor, it's going to be a good year.

Edit to add that Koskinen actually shook off his first period and was pretty steady from there on out. Didn't cost the game, let in a bad one but made some good saves in the 2nd and 3rd periods. Just a steady effort that doesn't hand the game to the other team is all you can ask from most NHL backups.
