Sweet return for a guy we picked up on waivers 2 months ago, although I imagine there are a lot of people on this site scrambling for a way to make it seem bad so they can keep badmouthing Chiarelli.

Scrambling? Nah, this link makes it easy for us.

Chia built a team that's ONLY 18 points out of a playoffs spot despite having the best player in the world on an entry level contract, but good work stealing a third rounder. I guess. I wonder if Davidson and Eberle were buds.

Davidson is making $1.475MM this year but he's playing in a spot where the team should be paying someone half that. It would be better if we could trade the $4MM guy playing a similar role but would Davidson have been qualified at that amount? He probably shouldn't be.

So I won't lose any sleep over this. Do I think it's one we should be rejoicing about? Probably not. It's a third round pick next year. We are talking about a return that doesn't play in the NHL for the next 4 years at least...if ever. Is it a win for Chia? Maybe. He took a guy we just got for nothing and got a pick for him. The issue of course with Chia is he loses the big trades, so I can't be too excited about a tiny win that doesn't improve the team any time soon.

Holy schnikies stop trading with the Islanders. Davidson is probably gonna win the Norris now.

You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you can get a lottery pick.

Davidson has been the Oilers second best defenseman since he came back. Terrible trade.

Well his “new plan” is to move away from big plodding players and become faster.

Perhaps his strategy is to get rid of every slow player without a NMC and find out how many 3rd rounders Ottawa wants for Karlsson.

I'm with you, he's a decent D man, and he would have been cheap to re-sign, we'll need cheap with the bloated payroll we have with that are paid 5 x their value, it's clear Chiarelli has no clue what his roster is going to be, there is no plan, he'll pay some clown 3 x Davidson's contract for a guy that is worse, because he's got a "feeling". He's making bets on getting guys he won't get. The guy is a disaster.

Come on guys, they turned a waiver pickup into a 3rd round pick. That’s good asset management, no matter who the GM is. I’m frustrated with the team too, but clearly they were not going anywhere this year so why not sell off guys. Davidson is a fine player but he’s not tipping the scales for us, he could barely get into the lineup. To get a 3rd round pick for him is good.

God I hate this team right now though, they’ve made us all so damn jaded.

A defenceman who can play in the NHL for a pick that has a 10% chance of even playing in the NHL. This is why we can't have nice things.

I wish Davidson was a right handed shot. Or that Benning wasn't. Or that we weren't tanking again. Would shutting down Klefbom hurt or help the tank?

An NHL caliber Dman that you could totally resign to a reasonable contract... for magic beans.

This is not the way that teams get better.

We have kinda locked up that left side though with klef, Nurse, Sek, Russell.

In a dream world that is unlikely to exist, you would put Davidson's 1.5M cap hit as a part of another actual top 4 RHD.

That’s a fair point. I just feel like Davidson’s always gotten the short end of the stick, in terms of opportunities to entrench himself at the NHL level. It’s like his draft spot immediately precludes him from being considered part of the long-term picture, when in reality he’s a pretty decent Dman.

Makes sense that he could have something up his sleeve in the way of a RHD. Shame to see Davidson go, he played well and came at a reasonable price. A good depth player. Must be something in the works they are making room for. If not I'll jump back on the Chiarelli hate wagon because he deserved a better fate.

My point is - everyone outside of the moronic bubble that is Oiler Fans thinks this is a good trade. Bob Mackenzie just said on TSN that he was shocked over the islanders giving up a 3rd. So, get off your high horse, have a cold beer and try not to be level headed.

Agree it is a good return in a bubble. The Russell signing means we cant sign a cheap LD who IMO has been just as good since coming here.

The trade doesnt happen in a bubble, so many of us have thoughts like this;

Much better opinion to use as your own.

Either way, rec players or Bob Mac, I will still form my own thoughts.

Basically what I am saying is that trading a guy that you got off of waivers for a 3rd. Great return when in tank mode.
Giving up a 3rd pairing LD (that arguably has outplayed everyone else on that side) that could be had at the cheap because the left side is all filled up with multi year, $4mill AAV, NMC contracts is frustrating.

Not going to lie, I was pissed when I heard we traded Davy, AGAIN. Screw Benning....He's Pete's boy. But if I was at the helm, he'd of been the guy I would of traded. Sad to see Davy go. Glad to see we get another 3rd rounder that'll be used to pick up a guy we trade to Nash for some other guy,and in 2021 who goes to break his 34 game scoreless streak, to beat us 2-1. Cause it's so Oilers

Agree, Benning is brutal, his skating is only beaten by Letestu for slow mo. Davidson at least resembled an NHL hockey player, Benning hangs on for dear life every shift, and couldn't break up a cycle if his career depended on it, weak sauce.

Good return for Davidson. I like Davidson, I don't have a problem with him. He's a solid 6-7 dman. But he's a 6-7 dman, he's a left shot, not the greatest puck mover, has a good shot he never uses and puts up squat for points. The biggest negative is he is making 1.425 mill who if you qualify him, will make over 1.5 mill. So as much as I like the guy, I like his story, no way you can be paying a guy that much to potentially sit in the press box for half a season. At going to be 27 this year, Davidson is what he is. I personally look at the Oilers defense and the depth in the organization and they have lots of left shooting, not overly great puck moving dmen who don't put up a lot of points. If Davidson doesn't get qualified and he wants to sign back with the Oilers for way less than 1 mill, I'd have no problem with that. But turning a waiver pick up into a 3rd rounder is a very good trade in my books.

I liked Davidson, and thought he had some compete.

That said, a waiver pickup and turned that into a 3rd rounder. Sound deal.

Should he be qualified at his 1.4 mark? No. He's not that guy, maybe in time.

The very definition of insanity is doing the exact same thing expecting different results.

Generally Disappointed.

Davidson catches on with Chicago. Get's a one-year, one-way deal.

Once they lost out on Gravel AND Jerabek they had to look at other options I guess.

You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you can get a lottery pick.

Good for Davidson. As much as I like Davidson the person, I didn't see a fit on the Oilers. They already have WAY too many guys just like him. Been there, done that. Chicago's d-core is pretty weak so he did well to go there.

So who would you prefer? Davidson or Garrison?

Actually, liked him better than what I've seen of; Jarabak, Gravel, Garrison.
