Lots of fun Matthews talk lately. ESPN put out a funny (presented seriously) article about what the Leafs could get trading Matthews (a Lindros like return is speculated).

Lots of talk as well about how he's not getting a fair shot on the PP. I wonder if Babs and Lou are trying to weaken Matthews' bargaining power for his coming extension. If you're up in games, why let Matthews pad his stats more? I'm sure Matthews and his agent aren't stupid though, I hope that hurts the leafs this summer.

I don't think it matters what the Leafs do to him, with Eichel signing his extension for 10 mill, the Leafs can't possibly justify their opening offer starting any less than 10 mill. Matthews is a superior player to Eichel.

Don't doubt the Lou magic. Somehow he gets a top 4 pick to give up some of his bonuses in his contract. No doubt he will argue every point at his disposal. Keeping Matthews under PPG and using the PP time to prop up other guys on the team to stay close to him in points, while still finding ways to win can be pretty helpful for the negotiation.

Still no doubt in that 10M range. But if they just give Matthews all the prime ice time and let him run away with it compared to the rest of his team, could be the difference between 10M and 12M.

We weren't gonna pick him anyways though! Everyone in the org is excused because no one should be expected to take the BPA.

If true, then both the scouts, and evaluation process involved should be reviewed.

You simply can't prove you're the smartest dude in the room by picking the best player available. *insert smug comment about some random first round bust here*

Surprised no one has commented about him being soft....... speaking of soft, our cap space is soft, I haven't seen it take/make a hit yet.

The Ducks paid up to resign Cogliano. 3.25 mill for a 31 yr old in June 3rd liner is a lot.

Is Cogliano the most successful of the first wave of super kids? Maybe Jeff Petry?

Good question.
Cogliano was projected and drafted I believe to be a speedy, point producing, top 6 center. He's a speedy, defensively responsible, 3rd line winger that can chip in some offense from time to time. But he hasn't lived up to what he was expected to be I would say.

Petry was supposed to be a good skating, right shooting, point producing top 4 dman, I believe. I assume he was expected to be higher than a #4. He is a top 4 guy but I think he is best suited as a #4. He does skate well, he does move the puck pretty well but he doesn't produce squat for points. He makes 5.5 mill. Is he not a way more expensive, right shooting Russell? So probably not living up to expectations. He's definitely not worth 5.5 mill.

Another one would be Gagner. Gagner was drafted to be a big point producing top 6 center. I don't even think he plays center anymore and his best offensive season was last year at 50 pts. This season he has 21 pts in 45 games so on pace for less than 40 pts. No where near up to expectations.

I think you put waaaaaaaaay too much stake in to the Oilers hopes and dreams for draft picks coming in. Just because they say on the pre-draft show that someone at #19 overall projects to be the next Jonathan Toews doesn't mean there's any basis in reality, and the Oilers have long over-sold hype on the kids they pick.

I think you're typical of a lot of Oilers fans believing that hype and seeing people as disappointments, but that's not how you should assess young players. Give them a blank slate and see how they develop. The team has regularly flushed useful assets because they too get stuck on what their over-hyped expectations of players were, rather than just looking at how they can help the team.

Right shot powerplay specialist who can put up 45-50 points a year? That would be a nice player to have! Good checking line winger who is never hurt, and generally positive impact while posting 30-40 points a year? Sign me up! Steady second pairing defenceman? Yep...we need those. (Also, no one projected Jeff Petry to be way more than that - other than maybe a couple ridiculous articles to remove the sting when the Oilers were trading Gilbert after Petry's first 20 NHL games - for a much worse defenceman in an early preview of the Eberle/Strome swap.)

No joke, I've never felt so bad for a guy getting suspended, ever. This really sucks for him. A streak 11 years in the making gone just like that, about 2 years before he would have overtaken Jarvis for the longest all time.

I'd feel worse for him if he didn't get a guy in the chin with a super late hit. I guess he has finally turned full Duck.

That is a definitely a disappointing way for his streak to end.

With zero history of discipline, I'd have thought he'd get a fine and a warning. Really too bad.

I don't understand the NHL.

Cogs with no history gets a 2 game suspension for what looks to me like a late hit from a guy trying to finish his check. Unfortunately he gets head contact.

Brown cross checks Schultz in the numbers while down on his knees, and he gets a 10K fine. Brown has been suspended once before it looks like.

I think they are taking headshots seriously, which they should, but are forgetting about hitting from behind. Hitting the numbers seems way more malicious than accidental head contact.

Or this hit from Perry on Letang. Letang is no where near the puck, Perry blindsides him. Contact is elbow to head. I'm not even sure the DoPS reviewed it.

The NHL is such a joke wrt to discipline.

That is a definitely a disappointing way for his streak to end.

Dirty play for sure - one that I bet he's been wishing he could take back since he did it.

With zero history of discipline, I'd have thought he'd get a fine and a warning. Really too bad.

So I've been meaning to post this for a little while. It's pretty awful that Cogliano's streak, #4 of all-time ends this way, but it's not the worst way for the streak to end. Garry Unger is at #2 - with 914 games played (74 ahead of where Cogs ran to ground) - and it probably should have gone longer. At the time he was playing, the streak was the longest in NHL history...until he ran in to a coach who decided he was bigger than the game:

Quote:

Partly because of his clean living, no doubt, Unger had run up the longest uninterrupted string of unmissed games in NHL history- 914 - before he was finally benched by the team to which St. Louis traded him, Atlanta. He had actually been dressed for what would have been his 915th and had sat patiently on the Atlanta bench, awaiting a summons to the ice from the Flames coach, Al MacNeil. It did not come. As the game drew to a close, and with the Flames comfortably ahead, Unger's teammates, conscious of his record, began taking themselves off and gesturing to Unger, but MacNeil kept shaking his head. Finally with Atlanta two men short because of voluntary withdrawals, Unger had risen up to leap over the boards. From behind, MacNeil grabbed his sweater to restrain him, and the string was ended. MacNeil's explanation was that Unger had for some time been more aware of extending his record than of playing hockey and was so anxious to avoid an injury that he had been playing tentatively. But Unger had been hurt by the decision and was happy to be traded to Los Angeles.

https://books.google.ca/books?id=LKR2iebOl4wC&pg=PA188&a mp;lpg=PA188&dq=al+macneil+garry+unger&source=bl& ;ots=RG65GFImRa&sig=5LgyM4icBtyTBr9_YfuDCjaO39w&hl=e n&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiP-431ufzYAhUQ6mMKHXHfDWEQ6AEIQjAI #v=onepage&q=al%20macneil%20garry%20unger&f=false

Unger could have been over 1000 games, if not for that coach. Seems to me like there was a better way of trying to inspire the player...and if you have players refusing to go on the ice because they want something for their teammate, I can only imagine how many bridges get burned that night when you grapple to keep him from jumping the boards.

That was beautiful.

Good that there are some things still left to enjoy this season.

And look at that bloodbath Metro division. 2nd place to 8th is separated by 5 points. Go Pitts, Columbus, Philly, NY and Carolina!!

I saw this article on twitter. According to Dreger, an NHL Exec told him that if Tavares hits the open market, some team will offer him a 7 yr, 105 mill deal. So 15 mill a season.
https://www.fanragsports.com/dreger-tavares-could-receive-10 5-million-ufa-offer/

I will believe it when I see it but Dreger is about as tapped in as you get so if that happens, that is insanity.

Hahahaha...Dreger isn't as tapped in as it gets. Dreger is constantly used by GMs and agents, because he'll report anything he's told. Remember when Sather was suggesting through leaks to Dreger that he was going to get two first round picks for Cam Talbot?

I don't see the same thing happen nearly as often to McKenzie or Friedman...I think they're A) a little more respected or B) a little more discriminating and take things with a grain of salt. Dreger is just more reliable when you want something blabbed.

Either a rival GM wanted that reported to mess with the Islanders and just told him that they'd throw that kind of money at him, whether it's true or not, or Tavares' agent was looking for a little extra negotiating push and call Dreger to put this out there to put more pressure on Snow.

Taylor Hall scores his 100th point as a Devil tonight...Huh. That didn't take long. 114 games. 47 points in 42 games this year.

If you want to be depressed, go to twitter and read the number of Devils' fans out there tonight thanking Peter Chiarelli and the Edmonton Oilers...

He should have been fired after that trade. That he didn’t get anything else but Larsson was a travesty then, and it’s a travesty now.

Wonder if Nicholson has time to watch hockey between all his work trying to make Katz money. Almost every night there is a Chia move to be embarrassed about.

Honestly we could have survived the Hall trade, but Chia followed it up with nothing but downgrades and cap hell inducing moves since. How can they still trust that boob with this team?

What effect can a coach have on a team?

Dallas last year, shots against:

http://hockeyviz.com/fixedImg/shotLocDef/1617/DAL

This year:

http://hockeyviz.com/fixedImg/shotLocDef/1718/DAL

They didn't really change much from last year, particularly the D carrying most of the load.

20th place PP and 30th place PK last year. 12th and 14th place for those this year for Dallas.

I honestly thought Marchand would get away with this one. Pretty sneaky elbow, but he just had to extend a bit to get the extra force to make it clear in a replay he did it on purpose

The Devils didn't even seem to notice either. Stafford just stood there...maybe as ex teammates he didn't want to do anything? Stafford's not the most physical guy, but you'd think he'd have done something. Glad he got 5 games though, well earned. Weird part is that he still gets to participate in the All-Star game on the weekend...don't really get that.

Paajarvi is supposedly on waivers today from the Blues. Both Lowetide and Bruce McCurdy think they should pick him up because he played on the Blues PK. Gregor in his article just posted on Oilersnation said he would pick him up again to help on the PK. Apparently MPS played the 4th most mins on the BLues PK.

I honestly don't know what to think. He only makes 800k and is a UFA at the end of the year. He can play and the Oilers desperately need help for the PK. The bad part is the Oilers have 49 contracts, so getting him would mean you are at 50. But at the same time, with the trade deadline coming up, I have to think that some of their UFA's will move. As an example Letestu seems like a logical guy and he's going to get you a pick. Even Maroon. I really don't think you can go into the offseason and let UFA's walk for nothing. I have to think that given his cap hit and what he could do, teams would be lining up to get Maroon so he should have some value.

Would anyone else pick up MPS?

I'd pick him up based on his PK work and he the fact still plays the game with speed.

.....looks like MPS is joining the Ottawa Senators organization....

...good luck to him...he still seems like a legitimate NHL'er to me....not a star, but a decent role player in the right situation...
