- Can we start some campaign to get Kerry Fraser and some of the refs of yesteryear back? I take back all the booing I previously did. The reffing in the NHL has gotten absolutely abysmal, and last night was a terrible example. Just awful.

- The penalty on Gryba was garbage. It's unfortunate, but there was no intent, and there was no targeting. Chychrun was in a bad place, but it was because he was low and off-balance, and the damage wasn't so much from the hit, as Gryba falling on him.

- None of that garbage happens at the end if OEL doesn't make that borderline and dangerous hit on Hendricks. How he escaped a penalty is beyond me. Anyways, have no problem with Kassian's response, and no problem with Doan's response to Kassian. Duclair looked a little silly in the whole thing, and Hanzal probably needs to fight someone that is less than 8 inches smaller than him.

- Once again all of Oilers Twitter is crapping on Shane Doan. Okay, let me tell you my position: I'm way more likely to trust the long list of players (teammates and opponents) that speak to his character, than I am Joe Blogger on Twitter. One actually knows the person and sees their interactions; the other doesn't but feels entitled to do a character evaluation. It's fine to not like the way he plays (and I don't particularly... to me it always seems like he still plays a 90s style game in the modern era... and the game has definitely changed), but none of these people are really in a position to start doing an character evaluation. Neither am I. But some are.

Again, an example: Denis Gauthier last week, in an interview about Jerome Iginla, unprovoked, commented that Iginla and Doan were the two best people in hockey. I'm more prone to believe Gauthier than Jonathan Willis (at least in this regard).

- Letestu. What a pleasant surprise he is turning into. Great season from him. Gordie Howe hattrick last night, 11 points in the last 11 games, key to unlocking the powerplay. Sits fifth in Oilers scoring, ahead of Nugent-Hopkins.

- Agreed on Puljujarvi. Get this guy to the AHL. This isn't helpful for him or the Oilers. Put Beck in, and try and find another RW (or preferably even two). Word from Bob Stauffer is they are looking to try and find a shooing, right-hand winger with some term. I'm all for that... and adding Jerome Iginla in the process. We need help on that right side beyond Puljujarvi (1 goal), Kassian (2 goals), Caggiula (1 goal), and Beck (0 goals).

- So nice to finally, FINALLY, beat the Coyotes in regulation. That was just a stupid, ridiculous streak. Glad it's broken.

Having re-watched the Gryba hit, I have to say that a penalty was, indeed, warranted. However, anything more than a 2 minute minor for a hit to the head is overkill (he did make significant contact to the head with the hit).

OEL's hit on Hendrick's was the exact reason they changed the icing rule. If the roles were reversed and it was Hendricks that laid out OEL, we would all be fine with it. Personally, I think OEL's hit was clean and legal.

I don't think calling Kassian's crosscheck, "intent to injure" is THAT big of a stretch. He comes barreling in there with the sole purpose of drilling him in the back, then immediately drops his gloves because he knew what he did was dirty. I, personally, have no problems with what Kassian did, but I do agree that it warranted a stiffer penalty than a cross-checking minor, and I can understand why it was called, "intent to injure"

Now, non-calls on McDavid, the phantom call on Pouliot, and just the general inconsistency we've seen all year from the refs is starting to get annoying, and I hope the GMs are in contact with the league over it.

Kassian - well done son... simply bravo. Sticks up for his teammates, spun around and said, who's next and Duclair got his answer. Letestu danced with Hanzal after co-incidental minors and I enjoyed it.

The reff-ing? I'm not understanding of what is a call and what's not a call?

Broke the curse in Arizona!

The team this year has more ticks up than down, this is for sure and "team toughness" is a concept that was once foreign to the Oilers. Now we're seeing the consistency.

Great to see. icon_thumbsup

The very definition of insanity is doing the exact same thing expecting different results.

Generally Disappointed.

a couple of random thoughts:

Cam Talbot with another outstanding effort...lots of action in his vicinity, especially in the third period, but he was strong....too bad the Oilers back-up for him is unreliable, and Broissoit down in Bakersfield seems to be trending quickly downward...I thought Broissoit was ready when he got the callup last year at the trade deadline, but once he signed that new deal, he seemed to have fallen back....or maybe the jump from the AHL to NHL is just too big...I haven't been able to project Oiler goaltending for a long time (I used to think Mike Morrison and Ty Conklin were going to be stars), but I sure think the Oilers need to find someone who can give Talbot more breaks than he is getting...

....starting to like the way the defense is shaping up....Davidson seems to be shaking off the rust and picking up where he left off last season, and Benning looks like he will be pretty dependable....I'm still not convinced Russell is a long-term piece of the puzzle...

...disappointing that Pitlick is hurting again...I haven't seen a hard working or hard luck case like him with the Oilers since maybe Rem Murray, another one of my favourite all-time Oilers....

I just came into this thread to complain about the officiating last night only to see that you guys all have it covered. Thanks!

What a clown show it's been the last few games. I get that some night the calls go their way, other our way and it tends to balance out over the year but good god.....could they be any less obvious? McDavid gets hacked repeatedly, mauled constantly and the refs do nothing. Gryba tries to avoid a collision with a guy who was already hit (by someone else) and is barreled over and Gryba bumps his head basically with his hip while trying to avoid contact. No penalty even called in the moment and then magically they decide he gets 5 mins for illegal hit to the head? That was such garbage and if it had been the other way around and an Oilers on the receiving end I would think the same way. If anything the Coyote player was in more danger on the ice after his helmet came off and skates were near his head. Isn't there a rule for having your helmet strapped on properly??

Mike Smith should have been given 2 mins for diving behind the net, and another 2 mins unsportsmanlike for yelling at the ref after not getting the call. Pure crap.

Kassian deserved a couple minutes for sure for the cross check on OEL, but where was the boarding call to OEL on Hendricks? Those 2 should have cancelled out, then a couple more to Kassian for roughing and same to Doan. Done, everyone goes home happy.

Nice game by that 4th line, and nice that the Coyotes curse is behind us. Kick the crap out of SJ on Friday and lets go into xmas 1st in the division!

Nothing for Smith or OEL? Thought they were supposed to be fining players for dives.

I wonder if the Coyotes would get up for games against us because of that streak they were on. When I see them play other teams, they play the true lame crappy boring robot hockey you always expect to see against us. They're still boring against us all the time, but they all seem to be giving 100% effort to try to stick it to us. They do nothing like that against anyone else as far as I've seen. The only excitement in their games is Domi going into daddy mode. Not much aside from that.

Hopefully now that this record is broken and the motivation to keep it going is gone, they can play like trash against us like they do against everyone else.

I love that quick right jab by Kas! If I'm Chia I'm telling Katz to break out the check book to pay the fine I'm about to take for bashing the atrocious reffing.
