I really hope the fans at Rexall applaud Penner in his return... booing him would not look good on Edmonton at all.
4-2 Kings. Eberle and Hartikainen with the goals.

Huge game for the Oilers. They need to win this one. I really want the Kings to miss the playoffs. Stars with a game in hand and a head to head could pass them...

I know that a lot of people like Hartikainen here is a quote from him in the metro today.
"I feel I'm ready," he said. "Of course, I have to develop my skills, my skating. This summer is going to be hard work for me.
"If I get a little bit faster, I definitely can play over here. These five games, it's been good. I've seen I can do it."

As for Penner i'm sure he will be cheered for the intro if he is playing on the first line. After that he will be like any other player when the puck drops.

If this happens, that would be great. That's really all you can hope for, a cheer and acknowledgement for what they did, and then move on.
I wish I shared your faith though. I truly doubt he will be treated "like any other player." I have a feeling, like just about every other ex-Oiler that rolls through town, that the wonderful Oiler fans will boo him, especially if he puts up a point. Too often I am completely embarrassed how the fans react when former players come through town. So I'm hoping you're right.

Seriously? There's way too much of this bleeding heart nonsense. It's not done out of malicious intent (unless it was deserved ie. Pronger) - it's done because they are PLAYING FOR THE OPPOSITION NOW. It's playful jeering. Moreau and Pisani got huge rounds of applause, but would have been playfully booed if they'd put up some points on us. Doug Weight and Bill Guerin never were booed. Staios was never booed. Jason Smith was never booed. Stoll was never booed. Greene was never booed. Visnovsky was never booed. CuJo was never booed. Grant Fuhr was never booed. Mark Messier was never booed. Glenn Anderson was never booed. Wayne Gretzky had more fans in the building than the Oilers did. Jari Kurri was never booed.
Seriously, the list goes on and on. Playful booing does not keep these guys up at night, nor does it prevent free agents from wanting to come here - that's taken care of by the weather, the old boys club management, and total team futility.
Every time I hear someone whine about "how former players are treated", it makes me want to boo just to milk some more tears from the people who keep bringing it up.

Doug Weight absolutely WAS booed, because it always blew mind that we'd boo him, of all players.
I'm sure some of the other names you listed were as well. Put me on the embarrassed for Edmonton side - in the first place. After a hearty welcome back, boo away.
Then I'll just regress, because I feel I've made myself perfectly redundant.

Weight was booed, and it did affect him, but he got big applause when he came back, until the first time he touched the puck in the game.
That's the audience helping to play a role for the team...getting in the head of an opposing player. Weight flat-out said that it affected his game. It affected some of the other guys too. Gretzky got booed here too on his return after an initial ovation of several minutes. It was hard to keep that up, because the city loves the guy so much. Everyone still cheered like crazy for him when he scored point #1851.
Personally, I don't think Penner is deserving of boos, because he wasn't here THAT long, and he wasn't that great in his time here. There's no cord that really needs to be cut.
I do think people are much too sensitive about it though around these parts. You notice that Weight never stopped saying Edmonton is a great place to play, no matter how often they booed him here. Comrie still came back despite being the biggest villain since Jimmy Carson.
People complain about the booing of Pronger, but seriously, he's booed loudly in about 12 rinks around the league for various reasons.

Yep, seriously. It's not that I worry about hurting the players feeling... they're big boys they can handle it. In fact, one of the reasons I hate it so much is because I think it is completely pointless most of the time.
But mostly, I hate it because it is absolutely embarassing to the fans. It's like someone who breaks up but won't stop talking about their ex. If it ended well, remember the times you had and most importantly, move on.
And there are several of those players you mentioned that definitely did get booed. Doug Weight and Steve Staios for sure. I think Stoll and CuJo may have been also, although I cannot remember for sure.

Fair enough. Some of the names I mentioned may have been booed, but it wasn't malicious. I don't see how it reflects poorly on Edmonton. We're passionate about our team, and we may boo the opposition frivolously especially if they used to play for us.
I just think this whole issue is brought up way too much. You don't want to boo? Don't boo. I'll go ahead and do what hmcewan said - welcome them back with applause, but once they start putting up points against us? I'll go ahead and boo.
I also feel like a lot of the fuss about this comes from people who don't go to the games. It really is an innocuous thing when you're in the building, but I can see how it seems worse to hear it on tv.

Sorry I can't remember which one it was (might have been Weight) but at least one of the former Oilers have said that it was fun to come back here and have the fans boo them when they make a play or get a point.
I do not see a problem with booing him during play, at least for the first part of the game. I think it gets a bit much if it is the last 5 minutes of the third and they are still booing unless the players name is Pronger.

Fans here have shown class too, Smytty and Weight come to mind. Applause and cheer when the Oilers single them out for their contributions.
After the puck drops, they are the opponents. Nothing else matters after that.
The very definition of insanity is doing the exact same thing expecting different results.
Generally Disappointed.

Booing him is a given. Our fans always boo the player everytime they touch the puck. However, I definately hope he gets applauded at the beginning of the game if there is an opportunity to do so.

If Penner throws a check or two instead of his patented fly-bys, he will be boo'ed soundly. I still regret that Penner isn't wired to realize just what type of player he could be and just work a bit harder to be that player. He wasn't that player with Edmonton, and he won't be that player in LA. What I'll miss about Penner is he is durable and can be counted on for 25 goals.
Otherwise, I don't really care whether any former players are booed or cheered.

Rod Phillips IS the Oilers and will be missed!!
As for booing former players...they way they seem to constantly come back and light us up as recently as last game, I have no issue booing them either!! lol
Give them the mandatory cheer in warmup then it's fair game!!

Staios was booed so much when he played for the Oilers that it would have been kind of weird for him to come back and not get booed.
Wouldn't it be more of an insult to cheer every time he hops over the boards?
I figured that the Oilers chances of scoring increased a bit when he was on the ice for the Flames.

Quote: | “They have a lot of new guys by the looks of it, but Cogs will probably be out and hopefully I’ll get a couple of draws so I can get my percentage up,” Penner said as he scanned the Oilers lineup and picked off the name of Andrew Cogliano.
When told that defenceman Theo Peckham figured he’d have no problems handling the big winger — at least not verbally — Penner responded: “I don’t know if I’ll be skating in front of the net with that head of his.”

Penner weighs in with a verbal chop or two...

Penner's sense of humour has never been really understood here in Edmonton. He is hilarious, like going out on the ice in Montreal for the 3 stars or the running beef with his friend Scott Oake. It would be interesting to have put a mic on him for the game to see the verbage interaction with his friends.

Penner's faceoff stats for the season 43% before the game
Cog's faceoff stats for the season 41% before the game
During the game:
Penner went 0 wins - 1 loss (0%)
Cogs went 8 wins -10 losses (44%)
Looks like Cogs wins this one!
Jordan Eberle on his goal scoring: "A lot of guys joke that I have a muffin. Well, it's an accurate muffin, and that's all that counts."
