It will be sad to see him go. Hope I can get to a game by the end of the season.

He's still better than Pavarotti in Vancouver.

I really will miss Paul. Not just because he is an Oilers icon but also because he did not try and drag out the anthem like some of the newer singers. Pretty soon nothing will remain from the Oilers glory days, Rods gone, Pauls going, Rexall's going etc.

I personally say the Oilers should record him singing the anthem and just play the recording before games rather than hire someone new.

Totally agree with you. I'd rather that than cycling through people that are more often than not, quite bad.

Although Paul wasn't the greatest singer in the world... he's a huge part of this franchise's history.

I also can't stand that chick in Calgary. Both of those singers are irritating.

I HATED Paul when I first started going to oiler games, the voice, the tone...then in 01 I actually listened to him around the Sept 11 thing, first game of the season I think. I forever changed my view on him as an anthem singer with his passion for our country.

He will be missed.

For an anthem singer I liked him. As Tencer said on his tweet last night he was a classy guy that was great with the fans. His willingness to take a backseat to the fans during the run to the finals in '06 was priceless and a class act!!

He will be missed!

Cogliano is not and will never be a valuable part of the Edmonton Oilers. The day he is no longer on the Oilers NHL roster is the day they turn the corner to being a good team.

I may be in the vast minority here, but I don't really understand why we sing the national anthems prior to games anyway. I get it for international events, but why in professional sports? I understand the politics behind the Olympics and "Country Pride", but let's face it, all NHL teams are a mixed bag of cultures. The game is played in 2 countries by players from many many countries. Tradition is the only reason I can think of as to why it's still sung before games. I personally believe that while tradition can be great, if it serves no purpose then what's the point. I don't see this changing, or am I even suggest that it should. More just thinking out loud here.

As for Paul, everytime I hear him sing it brings me back to the days of watching my childhood heroes: 99, 17, 31, 11, and 7

He may or may not have been the best, but when he sings it feels right.

Jack Michaels does an ok job calling the games. I still like how Phillips embelishes goals, saves and fights a little bit. I guess that is the difference between having a local guy like Phillips call it vs a guy from Alaska.

I agree for the most part. I don't think they need to be sung. However, with that said, it was some of my strongest feelings of patriotism during those '06 playoffs being part of the crowd and singing the anthem. It was a pretty cool experience and we were very well received across North America for it.

I totally agree with you that the anthem can bring a whole new level if emotion to the game, like in the '06 playoffs. But couldn't a team theme song (or something like that) potentially accomplish the same thing? I suppose it's great when your the last Canadian team remaining and most of the country is all supporting the same team, but other than that I don't get it. The whole concept just seems like a very "cold war" mentality.

That's the feeling I will miss.

Like hearing Danny Gallivan or Dick Irvin in the background on Saturday nights as a young kid. It meant it was Saturday night. Just like when Paul sang it meant it was Oiler time.

Hope they get a good replacement.

I agree. I have never particularly liked the anthems being performed.

- Everybody used to rave about Messmer and the Chicago Stadium experience but I still go into Nam-style convulsion flashbacks and reach for Excedrin just thinking about old playoff series' against the Hawks.

- The worst used to be in LA when you'd get some twenty minute, five octave vocal exercise from some Mariah-Carey-in-a-bear-trap wannabe trying to "make it their own."

Lorieau? Meh. Wasn't my favorite singer, but he seems like a nice enough guy and he did it for so long you can't not respect the effort.

Exactly.

Nothing worse than some clown that figures it's their "big break" to make it and impress some music exec, then wanders off on some stupid, warbling, change of pace, Christina Agulera impersonation. That's just being selfish.

It's our national anthem, people are supposed to sing along, you've been given the priviledge to lead it, just keep it simple, LOUD, proud, and constant pace, .. and you will have done the job required.

I downloaded every game of that run and have it stored on an external hard drive. Lest we Forget. An awesome 2 months.

No Cups

The cup run was possibly the best time of my life and going to game 5 in Anaheim during Summer vacation was probably my proudest moment at a hockey game.

Kept on watching hi lights to the playoffs thanks to WhoreableGuy, but really lost interest in it this year. Living too much in the past.
