The Edmonton Oilers made a late splash on the trade market, getting Sergei Samsonov from the Boston Bruins in exchange for centre Marty Reasoner, prospect Yan Stastny and a second-round pick.

Samsonov, a small, speedy winger, has 37 points and a minus-3 rating in 55 games with the Bruins this year. Drafted 8th overall by the Bruins in 1997, Samsonov has 376 points in 514 career games.

Samsonov, 27, is making $2.77-million this season and will be an unrestricted free agent in the summer. He figures to play a top-six forward role in Edmonton.

Reasoner, 29, is a Boston College grad who has put up 26 points, and a team-worst minus-12 rating, in 58 games with the Oilers this year.

With Samsonov gone, the Bruins may need Mariusz Czerkawski, picked up on waivers from the Toronto Maple Leafs, to move into a scoring role with Boston.

I'm excited to see us pick up a skill guy, but does this not seem like a steep price for a rental?

Marty is also a UFA at the end of the season.

Statsny is probably behind Pouliot, Cogs, Schremp and Jacques in terms of long term Oiler plans.

The 2nd is a 2nd... tough call either way on the value.

I think it's a good price to pay... the only thing the Oilers lost was a tough as nails 3rd/4th liner who was willing to die to block a shot.

The only thing we lose in this deal is Reasoner's heart... but I think we have the bottom 6 depth to address that.

Reasoner didn't give the coaching staff any guff.

He was a good soldier, no doubt.

Can't take that away from him.

Fair assessment. Reasoner's strength was that he was hard on the puck and terrific with his feet, good passer too. The kind of depth player that winning teams have I think.

Still, he was hurt lately, and not playing especially well (same goes for a few other guys I know). If he was tied up for a couple more years then it would be hard to like this deal. But as you say, he was UFA at year's end anyways, and you have to give up something to get something.

I'm a big Samsonov fan though. Started following him when I read an article about him in THN, he was an underager in the IHL at the time. Really hard on the puck, he's small but strong, a puck possession guy. He can play against anybody IMO, though Sullivan seems to have chosen not to play him much that way. And he can skate like mad and turn on a dime and has stick skills second only to Hemsky on this squad.

He's as fragile as sugar glass though. I'd be leary of signing him to a long term deal in the summer if I was Lowe. Seems like when he isn't hurt he's playing hurt. When he's fit he's terrific ... and in a way that the bad guys never have the puck IMO. We'll see. Seems like a pretty cheap deal from where I sit ... but I don't know if he's fully healthy right now.

SN's Louis Jean was in Bos covering the Habs with all the trade day stuff so with the SS rumors he interviewed the BHerald's B's beat writer, Kevin Dupont. Jean asked Dupont about SS's latest "injury" when he ran into Langfield in practice on Mon. Dupont said that was nothing and this was the healthiest point SS has been all season.

That being said yes he's been a concern the last couple of year durability wise and the guys on SN said today that he showed up with 20% body fat at this year's camp.

Don't know much about body fat %s so I looked it up:

http://ask.yahoo.com/20020327.html

I guess depending on who you ask, 20% is either really bad or within range for healthy. Watching some of his highlights on TSN, he doesn't look exceptionally fat or anything.

I didn't quite catch what the one guy said after the 20% at training camp thing was mentioned, but he said it was the result of _____. Sounded to me like he used the name of a medicine or something confused2

At any rate he dropped back down in camp or shortly after.

We were all waiting for a trade like this. I think SS will rip it up down the stretch. I also hope we didn't give up MAP but if we did such is life....the future is now. What number will SS wear? 41?

I think the reason that there was so many threads was because the server was really slow(go figure that would happen at 3pm EST on deadline day)

I'm OK with this trade as long as it wasn't a bluechip non roster player

It was sluggish like a wet sponge. To be fair, HF, TSN and Sportsnet's sites have gone down for brief intervals too, so it's not an isolated thing.

All of those threads were probably not intentional, MJ. I've had trouble getting on and staying on this site all day. I attempted to post one seconds after the trade was announced, and when the page finally came up after I clicked the "Create Topic" button, there were 10 more. I guess this site is getting and has gotten lots of traffic today.

I know that I wouldn't knowingly post a new thread if I already saw one up.

So far, it is for Reasoner, a pick and an unnamed roster player.

Holy. Not sure what to think. Didn't think it was necessary. First thought is that they like Rem Murray.

Edit: second thought is that they filled that empty point-getter spot between Pronger and Spacek.

Yeah, it's gonna be tough sledding from here to the end of the year for Peca, Stoll and Horcoff. I'm not so sure I would have made this trade myself, given the state of Peca's groin. If Peca goes down...that probably puts Horcoff and Stoll at 22 minutes a game. Who knows what he's going to do this summer for centres when Peca leaves.

Risky, risky move. If no one gets hurt, it's not bad for the now. It's not good for the summer and it's not good for the long term but I'll trade all of that for a Cup.

it won't do much for his offensive totals;) but he'll learn how to grind and take care of his own end. He'll be broke in down there like Stoll was back in '04.

I didn't mind the 2nd but I would've liked to have held onto one of Stastny or Reasoner...just looking forward to next year's 3rd line pivot.

The way this is shaking out it looks to me like this is what it means for the Oilers to make a run at the Cup.
