Maybe Gretz used a weight loss gum?

What was I thinking. Of course everyone else's information including the keeper of the stats, the league, is wrong and Adam's is right. Silly me. I stand corrected again.

Sorry dude - but if Gretzky was 185 in his Oilers days, I’m 300.

Seriously - look at his hockey cards from the early to mid 80s. He was 170 AT MOST!

Better yet, look at his advertisements. Not to judge his weight but to revel in the pure majesty.

You guys are severely underestimating the length and girth of mini Wayne, it makes Klim look like a penne noodle. That’s where the other 15 pounds come from.

From the article I linked:

“I stayed healthy because I could hardly play a crash-and-bang style with my skinny little body,” said Gretzky, who was listed at 6 feet and 170 pounds when he first turned pro. “The guys who play a physical game grind themselves down because the body can only repair itself so often.”

And honestly, he probably wasn't 170 when he started either. There wasn't a lot of need for them to be transparent back then about any of these things. In the 1980s, Yamamoto would have listed himself as 180. All it mattered for was hockey cards, so no one cared if you cheated at the measurements a little.

You added it in your quote. He was 170 when he first turned pro. He turned pro at 17 and played 2 yrs in the WHA before going to the NHL. So you guys are telling me, he never gained any weight since he was 17? Seriously.

So that means that Nuge who I think was under 170 when he was drafted, hasn't gained a pound since his draft year. Got it.

I said there is no way Gretzky was 185 during his Oilers days (ie - his record setting seasons). He may be 185 or more now, but again - I saw him back then, and 0 chance he was anywhere close to that when he was smashing all those records.

Just because 185 sounds like such an outrageous number for him when he was an Oiler, I figured I'd check my hockey cards - and waddaya know...

Rookie year: 165lbs
2nd year: 165lbs
3rd year: 165lbs
4th year: 165lbs (92 goals, 212 pts)
5th year: 165lbs
6th year: 170lbs
8th year: 170lbs (215pts)
9th year: 170lbs
10th year: 170lbs

And then off to the Kings.

I know it's just hockey cards numbers, but I think we can all agree they wouldn't be underreporting his height and weight.

I think there must be an error in the stat or in the picture, how could he have been eliminated by the Hurricanes when he was on the Predators? I know he lost to them this year with the Devils and Last year with the Bruins, but two years ago the Hurricanes couldn't have knocked out the Predators.

Actually, that would have been the season with the Canadian division which would have made that possible. Please ignore my previous complaint

You figured it out:

https://www.nhl.com/stanley-cup-playoffs/2021

It makes this even more incredible an accomplishment for Haula. No matter where he plays, Carolina still finds a way to knock him out.

Also, it's a little odd how often Haula's moved. He played his first four seasons for Minnesota, got picked by Golden Knights in the expansion draft, played two years there - one really productive capacity and one injury shortened - then got dealt to the Hurricanes. Since then he's been a constant journeyman. Florida, Nashville, Boston, New Jersey. Where will next year be???

We should sign him. Guaranteed trip to the finals

Eberle 3 points in an elimination game to help Seattle get to game 7.

It really makes me want to see him get his. Hopefully it will be Kane screaming into his face after a pivotal goal.

NHL have 3 out of 4 dream match ups for the finals.

Carolina - low interest among the market team
Florida - low interest among the market team
Vegas - newer market.

Either one of Dallas or new franchise Seattle will suit the NHL fine.

Regardless of whether Dallas or Seattle wins tonight, I cannot remember a final 4 that I care less about. This may be the first year ever that I do not watch the last two rounds of the playoffs at all.

I also have to admit that I more embarrassed by the NHL now than I have been at any point previously - even more than the 2017 Anaheim-Oilers reffing debacle. The NHL is the only professional league that seems intent on NOT highlighting and protecting its greatest athletes. It may be partly my physical distance from true hockey markets, but I find it strange that at the time where my beloved "home team" has two of the top 5 players in the world (and arguably THE top two), my interest in and passion for the game continues to decline due to appalling league administration and officiating.

Also - despite the abysmal reffing throughout our two series ... there really is no shame in the Oilers losing to Vegas. That's an excellent team - especially after they added their over-cap captain Stone to the roster (just in time for the playoffs - another embarrassment to the league, in my opinion). The Knights clearly understand league (mis-)management and rules, and played to them perfectly - they tried to get away with things they knew they could get away with, and they were not disappointed.

Now I tune out until September ... truly surprised by my lack of interest moving forward.

The Oilers not being there notwithstanding, I think this will be a pretty good final 4. Carolina has been a fun team to watch for years. They're smart defensively with dynamic scorers. Florida is great comeback story. They were left for dead when they lost to Tampa last year, traded Huberdeau, and then started the season looking terrible. Say what you will about Tkachuk, and it's probably all true, he's an interesting watch.

Out west, we know Vegas is a good team that's hard to play against. They're a good hate watch. Depending what happens tonight we'll get a very good Dallas team that's got the best tender in the league but is somehow scoring a ton of goals OR a Seattle team that is pure chaos. Either way the WCF should be entertaining.

The real big problem I have with the final four is the NHL starting the season so late. It's really hard to care about hockey after the May long weekend. Start the damn season in September when we want hockey.

I feel pretty much the same way. As much as I would hate the idea of Seattle winning in their 2nd season, I like Larsson and Eberle so I can cheer for those players to win. After that maybe Dallas by default since I dislike them the least amount of the other remaining teams. I really wish I could like the Hurricanes, but as long as Brind'Amour is the coach then I still can't get past 2006. Once he is gone I think that will complete the turnover. Florida I wouldn't mind except for Matthew Tkachuk, and Vegas I can't stand for obvious reasons.

Will you be watching the rest of the playoffs?[ 16 vote(s) ]
1.Yes, I will watch most/all of the games 0 / 0%
2.I'll watch the odd game if it's on 4 / 25%
3.Nope. Our boys are out so I no longer care 12 / 75%

So, who is still going to be bothered watching the remainder of the playoffs now that our boys are out? I know I'm not. I couldn't care less about any of the remaining teams.

The first round I watched more games in other series. This round I of course watched the Oilers intently. Other series I had on at times, the Leafs probably the most of non Oiler series. I have zero interest going forward. If I am watching another teams series, I am watching because I think they are interesting as a team or they have some star power that I like or respect. None of the teams are interesting. Florida is the only team that in my opinion has a little star power in Tkachuk but I think he is a POS so I can't be bothered.

My guess is that these next round of series and the final will have some of their lower viewer rates in a long time.

My kids still ask to watch hockey almost every night, so as long as I can turn on a game I will always oblige. I am unlikely to watch an entire game again though.

Typical NHL hasn't scheduled Game 1 of the ECF for tomorrow night yet or game 1 of the WCF for Wednesday like they should. So there'll probably be a couple darks nights on the NHL schedule making it easier to forget about hockey in the nice summer months. The NHL is dumb.

One change I would like to see the NHL do but they won't, divide the ice into zones for the refs. Nothing drives me nuts more than when a ref from center calls a penalty in the far end while there is a ref literally watching the 2 guys in front of him. Game 5 for the Oilers. Broberg gets a holding call on Eichel. The ref at center who can only see the players backs calls the penalty. The ref standing right in front of them doesn't call anything because there was no penalty.

If they broke the ice into sections, then you would have the ref who's watching the play in front of them and can see what the players are doing calling penalties. Not the guy in the back calling penalties from an obstructed view. The game is getting faster and faster every year yet the reffing system hasn't changed. You have guys like McDavid skating at 35-40 KM/hr so to expect the refs to do a good enough job when the players are so grossly faster than them isn't realistic. Every year people complain about the reffing and it keeps getting worse and worse.

Doubt I watch another game. I'll check highlights, and laugh if Vegas loses.

I prefer the idea of an off ice official. No different than a referee on the ice, but they get to watch replays while the game is going on. Someone gives a slewfoot behind the play, they can rewind and watch it, turn a light on (off ice official's version of putting their arm in the air) and when the offending team touches the puck, play's dead. Eliminates all the 'missed' non-calls and sneaky BS we all hate so much.

It’s May 15, weather is hot. I’ll watch the cup get handed out, that’s usually it.

NHL should really start the season in September.

I'd be down for that. I just don't want them having to wait for the off ice official to review after every stoppage. If the off ice guy can be watching the play and then if he sees something, he turns on a light while the play is going on to say there is a delayed penalty, that could work.

But that doesn't fix the other issue in my opinion. Too many times, the ref who has the worst angle is calling penalties from a distance. Like my example. The ref at the other end of the ice calls Broberg for a hold when he can't possibly see what the 2 players are doing from his angle. All he sees is 2 guys backs pressed together battling. He doesn't see Brobergs hands or see that Eichel was the one holding. The ref literally staring right at them saw all that and wasn't calling anything. So there should be a way to overrule penalties or like I said, break the ice into zones. So one ref gets one side, the other the other side. Once you pass center, the backside can't call stuff unless it's in his zone.

Maybe having an off ice monitor the back end stuff for cheap things, lets the one ref move forward so he can see the play better. But something has to change because the refs are becoming more and more impactful in games and this just isn't Oilers games and they shouldn't be. Refs especially should not be calling penalties when they are out of position to see the play straight on and they do all the time. In football, the ref calling roughing the passer or holding at the line of scrimmage is typically the ref that is standing right there. You don't get those calls usually from the ref that is 30 yards down the field.

I'm always reluctant to think the solution to any problem is simply adding more enforcement. Our shared NHL experience has already shown that adding a ref didn't solve problem. Neither did adding the control center in Toronto. Or linesman reviews or reviews of major penalties or mandatory penalties. So why would we think a 5th official in the sky would solve the problems. Yes, they would be able to see the game more broadly and potentially catch more infractions, but they'd also be able the game more broadly and potentially catch more infractions against your team.

The question becomes do we believe than an off-ice official that doesn't have to interact with the players and can be almost entirely anonymous will lead to the consumers of the product thinking the game is more fair? Personally I think a 5th official would help the game a little, but would lead to more screams that the league sucks and is out to get my team. Both on and off the ice.

Carolina won on the 11th, Florida beat Toronto (heh) on the 12th. Not playing until the 18th is ridiculous.

Perfect, Dallas won. So now there is zero reason to watch for any fan not from that market. Some people might have tuned in to see how new team Seattle did. Not anymore.

Other than being a fan of good hockey? The NHL got a really good final 4 with interesting and exciting teams... that no one will watch. It is pretty funny that the most northern game the rest of the way will be in Vegas and all 4 cities were once part of the Spanish Empire (I think. I'm not 100% sure about Raleigh.)

Hey, good news, build through draft defeated build through expansion draft :) Roope Hintz and Wyatt Johnson, both great hockey names. Oettinger has a biggest fan in me next round. Still won't watch though.

Worst birthday present ever for Eberle.

I agree and I think the TV rating will show that to be true.

Which makes me wonder why Gary bothers scripting the playoffs at all. Why bend over backwards for the TV networks just to give them Carolina and Florida?

I am pretty sure that the Spanish ever had the Carolinas.

That said, love the Sunbelt Final Four. If it can't be in Edmonton, keep it as far away from us as possible.

I find it bizarre, but I'd prefer to see a Dallas/Carolina final now...

And it is likely to be good hockey. Those are four good hockey teams after all. I don't know why anyone would suggest that they aren't interesting to watch, other than their geographies which is a weird petty gripe if you ask me.
