The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) on Monday suspended Russian and Belarusian teams from its competitions until further notice and revoked Russia's 2023 World Junior Championship hosting rights.

The announcement comes as sporting bodies around the globe move to bar Russian athletes from competing in international events amid Russia's ongoing military invasion of Ukraine.

The National Hockey League (NHL) suspended ties with its Russian business partners as well on Monday and condemned the invasion in Ukraine, days after Alex Ovechkin, the Russian captain of the Washington Capitals and one of the league's most prolific goal scorers, called for peace.

The NHL also announced it would no longer seek to hold "any future competitions" in Russia. The league sometimes holds regular-season or exhibition games in Europe, last holding an exhibition in Russia in 2010.

"The National Hockey League condemns Russia's invasion of Ukraine and urges a peaceful resolution as quickly as possible," the league's statement said.

It also said: "We also remain concerned about the well-being of the players from Russia, who play in the NHL on behalf of their NHL clubs, and not on behalf of Russia. We understand they and their families are being placed in an extremely difficult position."

Interesting times. I hope this has an effect on ending the invasion.

But I also can’t help but wonder why the USA can invade Iraq and not face similar consequences. Should sports decide these kind of things? If this is the age we live in, I hope it applies to all nations.

FIFA tried to soft pedal it like the IOC did.. were going to let Russia compete as Players from Russia... Poland called FIFA out for being spineless said they'd refuse to play them.. I think other countries followed suit.. then they reluctantly caved and now Russia is totally banned.

IIHF took their cue from FIFA.

No loss.. why enable their sports teams so they can provide nationalistic fuel to glorify these Fascist regimes.

Interesting to see what the other sports federations do, like the IIAF (track & field), FINA (swimming)

IOC will be the last ones.. if ever.. Russia is the IOC's greatest patron.

I was not a fan of the second Iraq war … but are you really going to equate that with this?!?! I’d be really surprised if you thought they were really in the same ballpark.

I don't think any Russian pro-athletes based here will be banned.
So far it seems mostly Russian national teams.
Individual Amateur athletes will be interesting to see, like swimming, track, and all the rest.
The IAAF is almost FIFA/IOC level corrupt so stay tuned to see what happens there..

When compared to millions of innocent people that are having their lives ruined, or have been killed, by a military invasion, I really don't feel that sorry for some athletes inability to bring glory to Putin's Russia.

Whether one was ‘less wrong’ than the other, all I’m saying is that by banning a country from competition, sports federations are setting a precedent. This will not be the last war the world sees, and they will have to decide on conflicts again. So invading Iraq and occupying it for a decade is okay because the USA didn’t want their land? Curious where the line is drawn.

Is WMDs a better excuse than de-nazifying the Ukraine. I'm not sure either holds much weight, even contemporaneously.

Do you think Putin is "de-Nazifying" the Ukraine? Like in the sense that there is any intent to leave the country of Ukraine better off than it was when Russia invaded?
I don't think either war is/was justified, but that does not mean that they are morally (or politically) equivalent. It is not justifiable to kill my neighbor's dog because its bark annoys me. It is also not justifiable to kill my neighbor because he annoys me. Both are unjustifiable; but one is (I trust) clearly more heinous than the other.
The invasion of Ukraine is naked nationalistic aggression which merits the strongest possible intervention and opposition by the global community (including, in my estimation, supplying western troops to help the Ukrainian army fight off the invaders).
