Smytty will always be in my Hall Of Fame !

Never understood the love for Smyth and not Weight in this town.

I actually like both players, just like Smytty more, both as an Oiler, and for representing Canada all those years, with success.. I'd put both in the HHoF.

Oilers team salary 2001-2002: $24.3 million
Doug Weight salary 2001-2002: $9 million
That why Weight left. Oilers cheap owners. Smyth just wasn't good enough to command a stupid contract from a rich team.
Kevin Lowe actually did a really good job keeping the team competitive without any money.
Introduction of the salary cap and change in ownership seems to have done more to sewer the team.

I've had that thought a number of times. With my understanding being along the lines of seeing Lowe as a good managed manager. When Lowe was managed by the OEG and restricted by cost, he could do well. When he was given more rope and had to think at a different level, he just didn't have that gear.
Was also a terrrrrible manager for Tambo, MacT, etc.
Some guys can really understand Fords and can get a lot out of them, those same guys do not understand Maseratis.
But, if you don't understand Maseratis, be adult enough to admit it and keep working on Fords.

2016/2017 - This Kool-Aid is starting to taste like juice.
2017/2018 - I'm drinking this Kool-Aid, in hopes that it's Drain-O.
2018/2019 - Another round of Drain-O, good sir!

Here's the committee that voted:
https://www.hhof.com/htmlInduct/indselect.shtml
Makes it easier to see why Lowe got in:
Kurri - former Oiler teammate
Gartner - former Ranger teammate
Davidson - buddy of Gretzky
Robitaille - buddy of Gretzky
Clarke - some Team Canada cross-over I believe
Francis - peer, Team Canada cross-over?
Larionov - peer, friend of Gretzky
Hedberg - peer
Mike Murphy - assistant coach of the Rangers for some of Lowe's time there
Burke - good friend of Lowe's pre-Penner, and then patched up things after death of his son
It really is about who you know...
|
So apparently you need 14 of 18 votes to get in. How the hell did 14 of these people think Lowe was good at hockey?
You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you can get a lottery pick.

Geez what a rambling, incoherent article. Matheson needs to retire.
Also am I right in understanding that Kevin Lowe was head of the 80's party planning committee? Is that the pitch to retire #4?

Yup :) Can expect a consistent flow of Lowe stories until we finally raise that sucker to the rafters.

"Next year I would forecast as another developmental year"
