LOL. Of course.

Toby just needs Koskinen in net, that's all. Weak goal allowed.

Larsson looks exactly like he did last year. Getting worried about the season he's about to have.

On positive notes. Haas and Nygard look a lot better than they have. Benning has been pretty solid too. Kassian playing with a lot of jump as well and Drai is doing some good stuff while probably giving a 70% effort. Actually noticed Granlund too!

Yeah with Connor and RNH out, Haas moves up and becomes a bit more prominent. Kassian the Oilers' best player in terms of chances, just got his 3rd great chance that I've seen.

We've had lots of good chances this game. Shame we have the goalie tonight that likes to give stuff away for free.

Yeah. Johnny seemed to be done after his epic dive early in the game to draw a call. Guess he figured that was all he needed to get the rust off to be ready for his regular season diving.

Larsson and Benson are weak links on D..
Koskinen is just freaking weak.. how about making a big save once in a while you freaking funnel.

Smith will be our starting goalie.. unfortunately..

I guess it is true. Rieder scores, teams win games.

Coaches love games like this were the other team dresses an NHL squad. It gives you the best measure of which players are ready. A lot of guys can blend in when surrounded by talent but take out a handful of regulars and the pretenders are pretty easy to spot.

Unfortunately the main roster Oilers all looked pretty bad, except Kassian. He was the best Oiler by far.
- Larsson was awful. looks painfully slow
- Chiasson looks slower
- Nurse looked lost more often then not. He seems to look his worst playing with Larsson.
- Khaira was invisible
- Gagner and Drai were floating a lot
- If either of Manning or Benning see significant time this year I guarantee a playoff miss.
- Koskinen is ,and I have no doubt, will be terrible. I see nothing positive in his movement, glove hand or angles.

On a positive note;
- Bear looks ready. He was the best d man tonight. I am not saying he is top pairing but I think he is ready for the NHL with spot duty on the PP
- Jurco looks capable
- I like the systems better so far. From the break out to the PP/PK it seems more modern as apposed to the basic BS of the last few years
- Most of the time I like what I see from Nygard
- Kassian had great jump and was very active on almost every shift
- Last positive. I am personally in mid season form. My old fashioned mixing skills are in top form

Manning has been getting tons of hate but I have watched every pre season game and he’s looked better then Larsson and even Nurse. Things would be different if he was playing the amount of minutes they do but I’d put more criticism on 3 or 4 other D guys before Manning.

D are so much harder to analyze (for me anyway) but man, I just dont see it. I dont see a good skater, passer or positional player there at all.
It seems like he is always a step or second behind the play.

There's also a pretty long history that can be looked at. Not many decisions should be made based on training camp and pre-season. Manning was a healthy scratch in Chicago last year and a healthy scratch here and then a healthy scratch in the AHL playoffs. There is nothing in his past that makes me think he could be a better defenceman than any of the guys above him on the depth chart.

Also true. I try to come in to each year giving everyone a chance. See if anything changed. With Manning I see nothing new.
I see the D shaking out like this as of right now;
Nurse-Larsson
Klefbom-Bear
Russell-Benning

Lagesson

IR: Persson

While I dont think these guys are better than Bouchard the AHL is the right place for him. Hopefully he can play top minutes there for the entire season.

If that Nurse/Larsson pair looks anything like it did in pre-season, I can't see those 2 lasting more than a week together.

Wonder what Nurse-Bear would be like.

I know it's preseason but I will give the Oilers credit. The Oilers were missing:
- McDavid, Nuge, Neal, Klef, Russell
So 5 for sure starters, 3 of which will be in the top 6, maybe your best dman and a top 6 dman, went up against the Flames starting team and were in it.

Gagner on waivers. WOW!

Nothing to see here. I’m sure we will hear shortly that Eberle and Strome are on waivers too.

You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you can get a lottery pick.

Guessing it's just a long shot to see if anyone will pick up his cap hit. He's probably on the NHL roster if he clears.

Silly. He's an NHL player. This team needs NHL players.

So Colby Cave made it?

I think the Oilers need to make 1 more move at forward.

The one thing with Gagner. He's got decent offensive ability but he can't skate to be in the top 6. He doesn't kill penalties so I don't know what else he does for you.

Manning also on waivers thankfully.

One positive is it appears that contracts aren't playing a factor in the decisions. It would have been easy to keep Manning on the roster as the #7 because of the contract. It would have been easy to keep Gagner because of the contract. But they went with guys who were better.

I hope you're right. It would be peak Oilers to keep Colby Cave over Gagner. Only one of those guys can produce at the NHL level. I'd rather a fourth line with Gagner than Cave.

Lagesson is going down as well. Persson must be close.

I heard they have to do some roster manipulations so they can make room to put K. Brodziak on the active roster at the start in order to activate his LTIR and free up his cap space.

Take a look at the PP2 line the Oilers were using today if you want to see where Gagner fits in.

His cap hit is heavy baggage, but he is an actual better player than a lot of guys still here. He Oilers need secondary scoring and he brings that.

Gagner might bring secondary scoring but he might not. Your #1 PP will play what typically over 3/4 of most PP's usually? I don't think the Oilers are a good enough team to have one dimensional guys like Gagner on the team.

All things being equal, I take Gagner over all of Russell, Cave, Khaira, Chiasson, and keep a healthy skepticism about Haas, Nygard, and Jurco none of whom have shown an ability to produce at the NHL level yet.

We will see what he does. Maybe the Oilers are seeing if anyone will take on his contract and plan on keeping him when he clears. I'm not sure it's a given he reports to the AHL and may retire instead (remember he went to Toronto last year instead of Utica and just had his third child... It seems being close to family is important). If he does retire, that will be some cap relief, but the active roster is worse off at the moment.

Anyways, I'm not even very excited about the season because I look at this team and know it's not a playoff teams. Lots of changes, but very little confidence it is any better than it was. The reason they made the playoffs in 2017 was that Talbot was playing like a Top-5 goaltender... They haven't had that since. We've got Smith and Koskinen now. If they can't steal some games, McDavid will put up 100+ points, Draisaitl will put up 90+ points, the Oilers will miss the playoffs by a wide margin and all hell will break loose next summer.

Tippett said when it came to Gagner. For the top 6, they wanted guys who push the pace. Gagner does not do that. For the bottom 6, they want guys than can defend and be on the PK. Something Gagner doesn't do either.
