Well I don't think MacT will need to evaluate for a long time to figure out who needs to go / stay.

Seems we have just been evaluating for the last few years.

Meh. Just a shuffling if chairs really. Lowe still is operating the puppet strings.

I do think its good having someone familiar with the organization. I'm not convinced its great having a newbie GM making such critical decisions for the franchise.

But more than anything, this just seems like a PR move to appease the angry fan base.

So the same group of people that were involved in the total collapse following the '06 run are now in charge? How exactly am I expected to believe in the (totally predictable) move?

I really didn't think it could get any worse than it already was. But MacT as GM will be bad.

Grinders galore! Everyone will be a grinder.

This. is. bad.

Well maybe he can at least find us some grinders. He can't play them on the powerplay from his GM seat in the pressbox so maybe its not a terrible thing. Maybe... Silver lining etc...

Lowe had to act fast here. If he didn't, then he's on the hot seat. I'm really not sure about this move. I mean, they spent months evaluating whether to even fire the coach, and then weeks deciding on the next one...and then for the GM they just pull the Darth Vader, and as the guy is expiring on the floor, point to the guy beside him and say "You're in charge now." Why the rush?

Yeesh, MacT as GM really just feels like watching that movie Groundhog Day with Bill Murray over and over and over again!!

Reminds me of that old Snoopy record player I had as a kid that would skip at the same spot, skip at the same spot, skip at the same spot!! faint

Rearranging the deck chairs on the Titianic is VERY fitting analogy!!

Hopefully this is the jolt we need but it's a bit scary at such a critical juncture in our rebuild!!

My question is, how much credit do we give Howson for getting CBJ into playoff contention or is it just something that happened after he left and is Quinn still with the organization as a special advisor-councillor or something....

In the end, I WILL NOT miss Tambo`s smug looks at press conferences, etc...now we get MacT with his mouth gaping open all the time!! lol

I would have prefered it the other way round with Howson in charge. OK he didn't set Colombus on fire, but at least he's got some GM experience and he knows the club. I can't see MacT being a step into the future, more like a step backwards. I dread to think what sort of contract we'll give Horcroft next time....

As for Tambo, he was steering the ship in the right direction, but it was to slow though these things take time, I honestly thought that this year, whilst looking like another miss in the play-off's was a step in the right direction, We've hardly capitulated as we have done in the previous years (I know it's a short season), and in a fair few more games than before we've been closer. That's in part obviously down to the coach, but also what he's got to work with, which Tambo has provided him with.

However, it will certainly be an interesting episode of Oil Change when they air coverage of today's happenings.

It was obviously the plan since bringing MacT aboard last summer. It's almost comical really. What a sideshow we are becoming. The Islanders are starting to look really attractive.

Adam - don't know that this was a rush job....clearly a contingency plan was put in a year ago with MacT, then even more contingency with howson earlier this year.

They had a succession plan in place for awhile...which means they expected Tambo to fail. Kind of a crappy environment to work.

Why is this organization so allergic to bringing in talent from outside the boys club? So damn annoying.

Guess all we can do is hope yet again that a guy that has no experience doing a very important job for the team will not screw up.

it really is predicatable with this org, I think Katz has ceded all power to K Lowe, who then brings in his buddies.

The good thing I will say about K Lowe and Mac T, back in their days, we had the best bottom six in hockey. Griersy, Buchy, Marchant, - it was gritty, they had heart. What we didn't have was a top line.

If there's one thing Mac knows, its grinders, and that's what we need. Goals from the third line.

Yeah, I agree, hiring MacT does seem to have alot of transparency to it, like it was scripted ahead of time and MacT`s position was made up until he would succeeed Tambo but my question is, if it was, then is this move to appease the fans or simply drawn up as part of the grand rebuild which I saw very much as Tambo`s plan but I guess we all know who`s pulling the strings behind the scenes all along!! mamma mia!!

So, the GM fires the coach and replaces him with the Assistant Coach who then keeps all the other assistant coaches of the said fired coach. confused2

Said GM is later fired only to be replaced by another insider who happened to also be a coach fired by said GM. Now the question remains, will this new GM fire the head coach and his assistants that he did not hire?

Elliotte Friedman said this morning on Calgary radio that Tambo didn't have real power and that it was MacT and KLowe making the final decisions. He further thought Tambo would be sacrificed and replaced by, wait for it, Howsen.

You can't make this stuff up.

Was MacT fired?

Yeah, I was one of the many predicting that MacT was brought in as GM-in-waiting a year ago, but there has to be serious questions asked about everyone's role here. If it's GM-ing by committee, that's fine, but then how does things change by axing one guy at the table if the group has been making all the (wrong) decisions?

Was assembling a bunch of "specialists" a Tambellini plan? Were all the free agent signings initiated by Tambo? Was he the one making the trades?

Or was he just the sacrificial lamb in place so that the braintrust was secure in their jobs? Not that he can complain about it...he did the same thing to coach after coach...but blaming your subordinates for your mess and insulating yourself isn't a sign of a healthy organization.

I don't hate this move.

I do.

This is the exact same group that was in charge when we started on this SEVEN YEAR run of futility. I hope you're right.

East of the Rockies and west of the rest.

He further thought Tambo would be sacrificed and replaced by, wait for it, Howsen.

Columbus is actually fighting for a play off spot though and we are now fighting for 2nd last in the west.

April 15, 2009: Tambellini fires MacTavish as coach. April 15, 2013: MacTavish succeeds Tambellini as GM.

Poetic!

Was MacT fired?

So more importantly, what does this mean for the Fake Tambo Twitter account?

Still jaded but we've got McDavid

It's awesome when the GM of your team is fired/replaced and you feel like nothing in the organization changed. It's quite a feat to create that kind of perception around your team.

At the very very least (desperately looking for positives here), I don't think MacT is the type of guy that would let himself be a puppet for someone else. Tambo was the kind of guy with that weak personality that would had no problem thinking someone was controlling his every move.

That's simple. You re-open your old Mac-T the Mouth Breather account.
