Gotta get this going. First rumor I've seen is a doozy!

https://oilersnation.com/news/report-edmonton-oilers-could-l ook-to-player-agent-dave-gagner-as-next-general-manager

Quote:

There’s no denying the Edmonton Oilers could be looking for a new general manager sooner, rather than later.

Ken Holland is in the final year of his contract, and if he fails to make any significant move to improve the team soon, it could be finished sooner rather than later. However, a common consensus in the industry is that Holland is more likely than not to sail off into the sunset — unfinished business or not — at the end of this season.

It begs the question of who Jeff Jackson and the Oilers could bring in to be his replacement. According to the Toronto Sun’s Steve Simmons, Dave Gagner, the father of Oilers forward Sam, could crop up as a replacement.

GM Ken Holland will be gone at the end of the season — his call — and I wouldn’t be surprised if Dave Gagner, whose son plays for the Oilers and is another former McDavid associate and a close Jackson friend, is brought in to be Oilers GM

Gagner, drafted by the New York Rangers 12th overall in 1983 and played a 946-game NHL career, is no stranger to NHL front offices. After owning the OPJHL’s Milton Icehawks between 2001 and 2006, Gagner was hired as an assistant coach for the OHL’s London Knights in 2006, holding the role for the following two seasons.

In 2008, he was hired to join the Vancouver Canucks, where he served as the Canucks’ director of player development between then, and 2013. It was then Gagner joined the offices of Wasserman, where he worked alongside Jackson for years. According to PuckPedia, Gagner represents 25 players with active contracts, including Oilers in Greg McKegg, Connor Brown, and Evan Bouchard.

omg it's getting hard to cheer for this team.

Isn't Steve Simmons worse than Spec when it comes to tabloid writing for hockey?

He's not great, but I think he's done a good job here to find a guy that perfectly fits the hiring MO of this org, properly accounting for the McDavid and Jackson boost factors.

This is the problem with media. They sell their journalistic souls to become witless public relations hacks, entirely reliant on access rather than effort or intelligence. They choose to become arrogant and soft minded because they have to maintain that access and it makes their jobs very easy. However that access allows them to drop the occasional nuggets of truth. It's just hard to figure out what those nuggets are

Still, no one should click on a Spector or Simmons link.

After he’s spent some time at assistant coach he should really have all the prerequisites!

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
Cap estimate next year given at BoG is approx $87.675M

Current cap 83.5M

Increase of 4.175

If we max our cap, 3.225 goes to Brown's ghost, so the new guy has 0.95M left to play with.

Follow up on Gagner's dad. He was forced by Eastern media to comment on the rumors. He says he has no interest in the job :)

Nice to know I was/we were right to want him banished to the AHL after game 9.

Brown had his chance to show something, missed his window, but the GM still doubled down on their mistake with the next guy on the hook.

On the bright side, the 2025 season after we'll get an even bigger boost with whatever increase the cap will be, plus Next year's increase that will be eaten up, plus James Neal's buyout coming off the books. Unfortunately we'll have $2.3M on the books from Campbell's buyout by then. When was the last time we didn't have a buyout on the books?

No option to buy him out. It was a one-year deal, so he cost the league minimum against this year's cap, and then $3.225MM next year no matter what (after he'd suited up in 10 games). It's an amazing farewell gift from Holland to his successor and especially galling given that Holland's big excuse about why they haven't been able to get over the hump is that he expected cap increases that didn't come. Now there actually is an increase, and he's spent it for us a year early.

So next year, no Holland, no Brown and virtually no cap increase.

Oh yeah, and probably collateral damage from needing to do something to flush the Campbell deal. They should probably strip Old Dutch of his Hall of Fame status for how badly he @#$%ed things up here.

There was an Atlantic article after this summer that said 17 teams don't have buyouts. Some have buried contracts, some have retained, some have no dead money. I did some spot verification with capfriendly, but didn't check all the teams.

Cgy, LAK, Bos, Sea, Was, NYR, NYI, TB, Ana, Caro, Buf, Col, Tor, Win, VGK, Dal, StL.

Somehow there are teams with zero dollar buyouts like NYI with Rick Di Pietro and Buffalo with Christian Erhoff. I don't know how that works.

There must be some way to quantify the Oilers method of seeing finally being out from under a buyout as a chance to do another buyout. We just love us some buyouts! Should extend Holland for a few extra months so he can get another buyout on the books ASAP in the summer.

Cap space usage does seem like a management study. Seems like cap space available at the start of any season divided by projected cap space available at the end of the previous season. If you have a pattern of this number approaching zero, you have a team that blows cap space like a mid-boom rig hand on his first day off shift.

A simple buyout calculation would be number of buy out slots used / maximum number of buyout slots possible. The close a team gets to 1, the more they use the buyout. Sadly, capfriendly has locked past caps behind a paywall and I'm not willing to look elsewhere.

On a couple rare occasions penalty free buyouts have been offered. Wade Redden was one of the famous ones, since the Rangers sent him to the minors for 2 years to avoid his cap hit. So when they were able to buy him out with no penalty, he played in the NHL for one last season. I think the last time it happened was the 2013 lockout.

NHL has cleared Stan Bowman (and Quennville) to be hired in the NHL again.

...will Bowman be part of "the process"?

With Nicholson in the fold, and how we jumped on Kane, I still say our media bubble / fanbase that will ignore any transgression is a super power. Flex it?

NHL has cleared Stan Bowman (and Quennville) to be hired in the NHL again.

...will Bowman be part of "the process"?

With Nicholson in the fold, and how we jumped on Kane, I still say our media bubble / fanbase that will ignore any transgression is a super power. Flex it?

Ick. I hate this tbh

Too bad JJ doesn’t want the gig… he’s done a bang up job today.

Even if you ignored the other stuff.. its not like Bowman's days in Chicago qualifies him for GM Wizard status., he ain't no Lou Lam.. plus he's been out of the NHL for about THREE (3) years ..

OK, we can probably all agree Bowman is not ideal.

Looking back at his moves for the Chicago 3 cups, honestly have a hard time finding that much that was impressive. Here is a couple of his trades:

Sep. 5, 2009
Chicago Blackhawks Acquire:
Logo of the Chicago Blackhawks
2011 2nd round pick (CGY - #43 - Brandon Saad)
2011 3rd round pick (TOR - #70 - Michael Paliotta)

Toronto Maple Leafs Acquire:
Logo of the Toronto Maple Leafs
2010 2nd round pick (TOR - #32 - Jared Knight)

Feb. 12, 2010
Chicago Blackhawks Acquire:
Logo of the Chicago Blackhawks
Nick Leddy
Kim Johnsson

Minnesota Wild Acquire:
Logo of the Minnesota Wild
Cam Barker

Lots of minor consequence shuffling around a solid core he inherited after that. He is very lucky that Tallon screwed up the RFA qualifying offers to get fired, which let Bowman swoop in and get credit for all the success Chicago eventually had.

The appeal of Bowman is that he was "a guy" that came into a team with a good core and won lots. He also went a similar way as Chia and Holland after the winning. It's another guy that gets to carry around a reputation for decades that was built on a short period of luck and inspiration. Please don't make this same GM gamble a third time Katz and friends.

If it's gonna be Bowman, I feel like today is the day. Nothing like getting a bad news story out on a Friday afternoon.

That said, given that there are only 32 GM jobs in the NHL, I don't think that Bowman deserves a chance at one of those right away. He screwed up big time and putting him back into the exact same position doesn't seem right to me. Let him work his way back up again. Prove that he wants it and deserves it. Don't just give him a 2nd chance just because he flashes his Stanley Cup ring at whoever is doing the interviewing. (We all know this seems to work on Nicholson. Let's just hope that Jackson is a little more savvy than that.)

I was looking at Bowman's history, and honestly it's not very good. Bowman is damn lucky that Tallon screwed up the qualifying offers and Bowman got to swoop in at a perfect time to ride a great core of players. Maybe one could argue the situation is similar here, but we still have some issues to fix. The D still needs a good trade to improve, and we really have to dance around the cap.

I just got this text.

Some news on GM. Was a lot of back and forth with Bowman a couple weeks back, have stayed in touch. Doesn’t sound like it will be an internal hire. Sounds like there has been significant conversation with Mark Hunter. Bowman has a couple offers from other teams in non-GM roles, but I expect him to come on board here as a senior advisor capacity. All things will run through Jackson, but sounds like it will be Mark Hunter.

Ugh. Isn’t Hunter always known for being another old school guy and an analytics skeptic?

The messaging from Jackson has been analytics. He even said the other day that the Oilers are catching up.

I’m not sure I believe any of the Bowman or Hunter rumours. Friedman mentioned Hunter a while ago, but nothing recently. Has Bowman been mentioned by anybody reputable in connection to the Oilers?

I would like to think the org are a lot more tight lipped going forward under Jackson.

shame on the org

what is with these people? making it extremely difficult to ever feel consistently good about supporting the organization in any way... terrible on so many levels...

Regardless of Chicago controversy.. I don't think Bowman is better than the other candidates available..

Jackson's first poor decision.. early luster tarnished.
