Aside from what Calgary does, where Malkin goes is definitely the most interesting aspect of Wednesday/Thursday for me.

He had a hot stretch after arriving in Pittsburgh, but it has been years since he broke 45 points. Last year was 41. This seems like a big overpay to me.
I'm not sure I understand what Pittsburgh is doing this year. The retirement contract for Letang is too long and too much. This seems really pricey. If you could have convinced these guys to sign for a bit less, then maybe you can keep Malkin - who probably doesn't need absolute top dollar to stick around.

Maybe i'm out to lunch but figured Rakell would be in the $3.5-$4.5M range. He looked better on the Pens.
Malkin is interesting from what is being repeated in the media about how Malkin doesn't think Pit thinks he's good enough anymore since the Pit offer wasn't long/high enough for him. He also had Crosby check in on him probably to sell the offer / check on a friend. With this and the Campbell situation as I posted in the Rumors thread that some of these players feel scorned by the organizations. It also can do with getting another pay day as well but sounds like TOR offer to Campbell at least from one source is the offer is very similar to what is being "offered" by "Edm".
Edit: added one word

it's not that Malkin doesn't think he's good enough anymore, it's that he feels like the organization doesn't feel like he's good enough anymore. I read yesterday that he would take less money, but he wants a contract that takes him to retirement and stays there and Pitts was only offering 2-3 years.

So we're going to move on from this and not get bogged down in a pointless back and forth? Good. Thank you all for being bigger people.

Good to hear!
Andrew Copp to Det for 5x5.6
Trocheck to NYR for 7(!)*5.6
Robert Thomas gets 8*8 (!)
Olofsson gets 2*4.75 (I really like Olofsson)
Mikheyev to Van for 4*4.75
Chicago signed AA and Max Domi for one year each. They'll be an interesting team next year.

Also Cirelli and Cernak also sign big 8 year deals. I'm shocked Tampa can afford all those.
Meanwhile across state, the Panthers are loading up on Staal brothers.

Here are Detroit's moves so far.
David Perron 2*4.75
Dominik Kubalik 2*2.5
Ben Chiarot 4*4.75
Olli Maatta 1*2.25
Andrew Copp 5*5.63
Plus the trade and signing of Ville Husso 3*4.75
Yzerman planning on his team making the jump next season, and lots of guys convinced he is right. Copp and Chiarot might not end up as good deals, but those are guys that can help a team like Detroit have the right vets to take another step. Will be interesting to see how well it works for them next season.

I looked him up and didn't realize he won the Cup with the Penguins. He didn't play much, but did play one game in the final in 2017, so his name is on there. All that talk in the playoffs about Keith being a cup winner, and they never talked about Archibald as a winner too.

Explains all the games he got in the playoffs though. Need winners like that in the lineup.
You'll note we didn't get eliminated until after he started getting scratched.

In a trade for nothing. Vegas needs to hire a business analyst for cap awareness.

That's apparently a full million per year less than Calgary offered. He must have really wanted out.

1) Took less....
2) to play in a tougher division...
3) in a less desirable market most NHLers want out of.....
4) on an inferior team....
5) while still being far from home...
Ok makes sense.....
Guess this makes up for losing Panarin back in Summer 2019 if you're CBJ...

VERY different situation, but who here remembers perennial 30-pt man Todd Marchant had a career year with us (60 pts), that just coincidently happened to occur on a contract year, then signed with Columbus for a huge contact, at the time, of $4mil? Yeah, I was pretty sour about that one at the time, but over time, I lived with it, as good ol' "stone hands" never lived up to the contract even closely.
THAT contract alone cemented the idea in my head that caution must be taken in signing a player contract with an outlier year.

Some other shoes will have to drop.. some teams have added big cap and still have guys that they need to sign.. or forced to deal someone off the roster.. could be some bargain bin buys.
For instance.. CBJ has 3M cap left.. but Laine is RFA, with the hammer. Someone will have to shake loose off the roster.. Probably similar situations existing elsewhere .. could be some good deals possible.
Miles Wood already going to arbitration in NJ.
Lawson Crouse is RFA (with hammer).. maybe Arizona wants to move him since they are in a rebuild..
Florida $2M over the cap.. needs to do something.. only have 12 forwards signed.. Weegar?
Same with Wash... $2M over the cap..
Vegas has about 7 players to sign with $6.5M cap to spend.

I am both glad Johnny is out of Cowtown, AND I hope he fails to live up to this new contract as well.

Same Todd Marchant that won a Stanley Cup with the Ducks?
|
He wasn't exactly the missing ingredient that got Anaheim over the top there.
I mean, how many Cups did Colin Fraser win? Simply getting to sip from the Cup doesn't make you magically worth your salary.
Funniest thing about Marchant and Anaheim is that he didn't want to go there at all. Originally included in the Sergei Fedorov trade, he used his no-trade clause to veto the move, only to have the Blue Jackets put him on waivers and the Ducks claim him anyhow. He's basically the origin story for no-move clauses.

That's apparently a full million per year less than Calgary offered. He must have really wanted out.

Johnny running away from any pressure. What else is new eh?
Can just ride out his career now with next to no stress.

This one made me laugh:

As a lifelong Oilers fan, I hate the Calgary Flames with a fiery passion but I don't think I hate them enough to leave $15 million on the table to sign in Columbus instead. Gaudreau's hatred of Calgary is honestly inspiring. My muse. My quarterback.
