refs are freaking embarrassing, its beyond incompetence, it has to be by design, they seem to consider themselves as the McDavid handicap, raising the bar on infractions vs McD to keep it "fair" to the plugs on the other teams. Plus the fact that Edmonton isn't a "first tier" NHL franchise, and their success isn't important to the NHL Corp vision of the future, results in us getting what we get.

You got that right. The refereeing in the NHL is just an embarrassment. Ridiculous amount of holding and interference in this game, especially on McDavid and Draisaitl, and no calls. The Chiasson trip was a penalty, but there was easily 5 as blatant infractions in the first period on the Flames.
Big effort needed tonight to beat the Flames and the Stripes tonight.

Its a thing. Its Sutter's MO, if you clucth and interfere ALL game, ALL the time, the refs will just give you your NHL game quota and then stop calling, and rest of your infractions are free-bees.. pretty simple formula.. worked for him in LA for years.. and everywhere else.. The Sutter Hot-Tub Time-Machine good old days of clutch, grab, trip, slash, hook its how you bring talent back down to your level.
