All four Pacific teams being disasters really puts a dent in the daily doubleheader dream. I guess I hoping for triple OT games from Edmonton, Vegas, and Colorado.

East of the Rockies and west of the rest.

Oh look, Kucherov is ready to go!

Joe Smith @JoeSmithTB

The band is really back for @TBLightning. You get Stamkos, Kucherov, Hedman with Point and Killorn on top power play. Ondrej Palat here too. Power play work to start

Toronto was actually able to work the books to get Andersen back in early. Maybe felt a little shame, or maybe just desperate to get him some games and see what they had with him before playoffs.

Tampa on the other hand, there was no way at all they could let Kucherov play with their cap situation.

I hate both Boston and Capitals.. its a lose-lose.. or .. is it a WIN-WIN? ..hmmm :)

Colorado over everyone else in that div..

Montreal over TO .. just to watch TO media twist and turn for 6 months..

I'm picking Crosby over Islanders.. hey I like Sid..

Nashville over Carolina .. no need to explain.

Panthers over TB .. it would be poetic to have TB go out in the 1st round after all the fraudulent LTIR maneuvers they pulled this year.

Our picks are pretty similar. The only differences being my desire to see Pittsburgh crushed and Caps are who I want to come out of that div. Can’t stand the Bruins fans, media or Marchand. Islanders would be alright, though I feel their successes bring back suppressed angst from the whole Chia age here.

Seeing TO tossed in the first round would be simply stunning.

Avs just demolish the Kings 2 games in a row to take 1st spot in the NHL and the benefit(?) of playing the Blues in the 1st round instead of Minny.

Should be a great series. Unless blues goaltending sucks, then a horrible blowout.

So the Golden Knights lost themselves the President’s Trophy when they elected to go with 15 skaters the other night. Interesting choice.

Crazy day of hockey tomorrow. 4 series games on Sunday.

10am - Pens Islanders
1pm - Knights Wild
5:30pm - Tampa Panthers
8:30pm - Lames Canucks

Those Lames/Canucks games should probably be getting played at 8am on weekdays. How embarrassing.

David Perron becomes the third member of #stlblues on the NHL's COVID Protocol list, joining Nathan Walker and Jake Walman.

Colorado gonna basically have a bye in the 1st round?

None. The Blues were bad in the playoffs last year and were uninspiring for this entire season. I'd prefer watching Arizona lose in 5.

He didn’t even come into the frame until the puck was in the net and the caps were into their celly. All four other Bruins were back as that play developed.

Some people want to blame Hall in any scenario. Oshie was Krejci’s guy. Hall was the deep man in the o-zone and stayed in front of the dman he was covering.

Almost Oiler Eriksson Ek with OT winner for Minny, and ex-Oiler Talbot with the SO in game 1 vs Vegas.

Wish he was an Oiler Pageau with a 3 point night to take the 1st game vs the Pens.

Sam Bennett gets completely jobbed by the refs on a totally clean goal. Tampa scores 4 seconds later. I wonder who the NHL wants to advance?

Where did this Kucherov guy come from? I didn’t pay SUPER CLOSE attention to the US divs this season, but haven’t seen/heard of him. He looks like the Bolts best player. Is he a rookie? If so, man it really puts a spotlight on McLeod to produce.

Exactly man.. I just tuned in TB gets tw Pp's in succession, in a game where they are letting everything go, then Panthers get called for a cheesy "interference" .. Kutherov now has TWO PPG's..

Announcers saying things like;

"wow, Kutcherov hasn't played a game for year.. and he looks like he hasn't missed a shift!! Incredible!"

"..he's been skating on his own for over a month.. because of the cap he had a time line when he would come back and didn't have to rush his return.."

.. Yeah NHL, even the thick skulled play-by-play guy knows what was happening, Kutcherov was ready 2 months ago, there was no way he was coming back before game 1, Tampa needed to finish playing out the $9.5M LTIR cap scam, everyone knows it.

The NHL is a embarrassment..

I'm hoping Gudas cranks Kutcherov, puts him on the LTIR, karma.

Totally pulling for Panthers.

Definitely cheering for the panthers in that one.. heck, maybe to come out of the East. Would be a heck of a story.

Edit: not East I guess... the Central. Ya. The Central.

This is a helluva game. Panthers hitting everything, lots of snarl from both teams, Tampa doing lots of kneeing - that's the stuff they really shouldn't let go.

Can see why he was only just recovered from his injury with a 2G 1A night and highest ice time for forwards on his team. Clearly a guy just getting back to NHL game shape.

This is a helluva game. Panthers hitting everything, lots of snarl from both teams, Tampa doing lots of kneeing - that's the stuff they really shouldn't let go.

Yeah that knee on Acciari was a crippler, guy went flying, NO call, right in front of the ref, total BS, then Bennet gets a call for a "charge".

Without the lopsided officiating on the penalty calls, and a guy that should be on LTIR, Panthers win this game. Kutcherov with 2G, 1A, all on the PP.

Panthers are now my team from the US.. I hate TB.

Where did this Kucherov guy come from? I didn’t pay SUPER CLOSE attention to the US divs this season, but haven’t seen/heard of him. He looks like the Bolts best player. Is he a rookie? If so, man it really puts a spotlight on McLeod to produce.

Can see why he was only just recovered from his injury with a 2G 1A night and highest ice time for forwards on his team. Clearly a guy just getting back to NHL game shape.

Yeah, TB played the NHL like the fools they are.

What a farce. Adding Stamkos and Kucherov for the playoffs. I don't know what the solution is, but they're going to have to plug that loophole somehow. Basically a team comfortably in the playoffs at the trade deadline could "injure" a couple of their highest paid players until the end of the year and go out and pick up whoever they want at the deadline.

Like someone mentioned, maybe enforce cap limit for playoffs as well? Would that address it?

As for the game, loved the energy, but happy I'm not a Panthers fan because I would have lost it. Really looks like the NHL wants to see the Lightning advance. Just brutal.

Anyway - I share the sentiment. F the Bolts. Go Panthers.

Kucherov being allowed to just come back like he did is such garbage. I guess one can argue that most teams couldn't handle one of their best players being out and make the playoffs but there should be a rule that says you have to be in the line up at least a certain percentage of the season. I heard on the broadcast, he's been skating for over a month and practicing for weeks.

Or they make it so a team can only be a certain percentage over the cap in playoffs. If you have to be cap compliant all year long, you should in the playoffs or at least close. They are over 17. mill over which is 21% over but with LTIR they make it. That's ridiculous.

See Pens fans very unhappy about Jarry's glove side this season :)

Hopefully he can fix that in next off-season with Schwartz.

Such a tough thing to address though - if they just say your cap hit is your cap hit, then what do you do if someone has serious injury. If you couldn't replace the money, then Oscar Klefbom's injury would have completely screwed over the Oilers this year.

And I think the NHL does like having it measured by total dollars spent, as opposed to salary-based, because they want to have trade deadline be active, as you can get the guy with an $8MM cap hit if you have $2MM of space left.

I think all you can do is penalize teams for flagrant abuse, but I suppose the Lightning could say that they were already penalized by not having their best player available for the entire regular season and that they couldn't play him, even if they wanted to because they didn't have the cap available if he was healthy early.

Not an easy one to figure out, and one where they'd need the PA to be on-board to make any major change to the way caps were managed.

No Cups

I can see the Isles beating the Pens again....which is quite sad seeing how Pittsburgh is the best team to challenge Tampa in the "Conference Final" if we can even call it that this year.....

The other solution would be the Caps and Tom Wilson injuring the TB star players for good while getting a slap on the wrist from the NHL....

You currently have have a $100M cap team v. a $79M cap compliant team, and the associated increase in talent that goes with it.
That extra $20M allowed TB to sign players they would have lost to free market at the beginning of the season, they were in a cap space nightmare. Instead of letting talent go to other teams, they made a long term "bet" on the recovery of Kutcherov, and that he'd be out all season. And when I say "bet", I mean rigged bet.
If there was any chance he recovered before, they were at a huge cap risk. To manage the risk they'd have to keep that $9.5M cap space free all year in order to activate him. But there was no "risk".

This was a long term plan from the beginning. Kutcherovs recovery time, and roster activation date, was preordained. Rigged. Outcome.

Answer: You need to change LTIR eligibility for the playoffs.
As a minimum, to play in the playoffs you should have to have played at least one game in the regular season, which means if you had a guy on LTIR all season, you lose the LTIR cap reduction as soon as he's activated, resulting in having to be cap compliant before the start of the playoffs.

REGARDLESS.. it turns out the NHL already has set the precedent on this topic.. they already have a rule.. any players signed or traded for, or after the tradeline, are ineligible for the playoffs.. SO WHY do they ALLOW a guy that was not on your team's roster ALL year to play? The two situations are Equivalent.

Watching this crap, it's almost like the NHL makes rules to suit particular franchises.. when ever needed.. TB was in cap hell last year, everyone knew it, they had mismanaged their cap into a corner, FUBAR, they were set to lose major talent due to UFA and RFA signings.. if you followed the NHL rules.. then.. almost like magic.. Gary hands them a get out jail free card.. wink-wink.

Florida all the way man.. pulling for the cap compliant underdogs.
F TB, F the NHL, F Bettman

Think they should focus on the end of season to playoff transition period. Tampa's scam was as blatant as it gets. Guy is ready exactly when the playoffs start, and everyone knows there was no way they could have put him in the lineup before playoffs because the LTIR going away would have blown up their cap.

So, make some kind of rule around the end of season. Like, if a guy is on LTIR for maybe 75% of the season before the end of season, you can't take him off LTIR until round 3 of the playoffs. If he's so hurt he misses that much of the year, sorry, but it's unreasonable that he is magically OK perfectly for the first few weeks of playoffs. If he's ready for playoffs, then get him in the lineup and on your cap books before the season is over.

Doesn't solve a scam where guys magically get injured for the trade deadline, but for now, more concerned about this obvious clown show with Kucherov. They were able to organize their entire season from the start around knowing they would hold Kuch out until the first day of playoffs no matter what.

At first I though “cmon!” Then I watched it again... definitely not a clean play and very different than the boarding non-call that Tampa got away with in that one. I forget which Tampa player it was, McDonagh I think, took a panthers player into the boards head first on the numbers, buuuut there wasn’t the wind up that Bennett had. Still shoulda been called.

I’d expect a 1 gamer for Bennett. But this is NHLDoPS so he’s probably out Min 2 because Tampa.
