I think it was voted best ice in the league in the recent players poll.
Does anyone watch a lot of other teams games? The puck does seem does seem to bounce around a lot in EDM. Perhaps I just watch so many more games played there that it seems worse.

Second best - Bell Centre was better in the players poll.

People just keep voting Edmonton because of an old reputation and some experience in the dead of winter.
Think it's well known now that our arena design makes it almost impossible to control humidity properly. Ice has never been good in this arena when it starts to get warm. My comment was said in jest really. Do know why it's bad. Just had to have that massive opening for the arena entrance.

Adam- thanks for the correction,
As far as the "old reputation" comment, KR, I disagree. If it was voted by media I would agree, they stick to a narrative until it isnt an option. I always look forward to the players poll as, while they have biases it does seem to be a more accurate reflection of the current state of the league, it's players, etc.
I think all of the rinks are a lot warmer than they used to be and the boards are less solid. Those two things combine for a lot more of a bouncy puck.
I am not saying that the Oilers have the (2nd) best ice, but I dont think it is awful.

I think our ice goes through more extremes of good/bad than many places. It's probably spectacular in the winter when humidity is low and it's easy to maintain. But we designed an arena that is heavily at the mercy of heat/humidity levels. I guess I could see that most teams are going to experience good ice here as it's cold most of the year. But come playoff time, the same stories and comments start to pop up about how heavily heat and humidity affect this new arena. It's no where close to the legend that was made at Rexall.

Was trying to find articles to refresh my memory about how things started at Rogers Place. Forgot it was actually bad year round the first couple seasons. In the winter, it was too hard to keep humidity up which ended up with super choppy ice and fan discomfort. But then come spring it was too hard to reduce humidity so it was sloppy because of that.
They upgraded humidification in 2018 looks like, which allowed full control over humidity during cold weather, which I guess would be important to try to get those player votes for best ice. But the spring issues I'm not sure can ever be fixed. Just too much open space in the areas the arena attaches to and mouth breathers in Edmonton to have full humidity control when you have to reduce it. Of course that probably just means our ice downgrades to being similar to other places, not that much worse. Still a shame we can likely never reproduce what we had at Rexall. Can't expect to get everything for $500,000,000 I suppose.
Seems we did get booted from the best ice list early in the Rogers Place days, so I'm probably wrong, the players do put a little effort in their voting :)

Excellent points and info. Thanks.
I have always found the ice maintenance and quality a fascinating topic. It is quite amazing the effect it has on a game. Considering games can be played outdoors, in California, it is amazing they can't have pristine ice indoors for every game, regardless the time of year.

I can respect how Arvidsson does an extra kick with his legs while he is already in the air. He's been going to Sedin school.
