I'd just updated my post saying they should target him under the "where's our goalie" thread in speculation.

Denver (Savoie) played UMD for their conference championship.. shut them out and UMD won it.. this weekend UMD played Denver again in teh final 8 for the Frozen 4 tourney.. he had Denver shut out until late in the 1st.. Denver only won 2-1.. I listened to the game on-line.. Fanti was giving the announcer fits with his saves..
So after UMD beat Denver in their NCHC championship playoff game 2-0.. they went on to play Western Michigan and beat them 3-0 for the NCHC title.
Then in the NCAA champs (final 16).. they beat Michigan Tech 3-0
So going into the game vs. Denver.. Fanti had THREE playoff game shutouts going..
Lost to Denver 2-1.. outshot 34 to 25.. with a 0.94 save% !!
Was voted the NCHC conference goalie of the year.

And had his season ended by Savoie too...now they can be teammates!
Box checked! Too many goalies on the farm now, so time to call up Skinner?

They did move Stalock so that everyone had room to play. Adding one more to the mix suggests something has to happen...and it's the obvious move. Smith's done, Koskinen is inconsistent. Skinner should be up. That obvious bit doesn't mean the Oilers will do it of course, but they should.

Smart kid. Clearly a massive opening in our org for goaltending :)
Did he forget to look at the D though? Likely.

I don't think Konavalov, or Rodriguez will become a No.1 .. need to get some solid prospects, and they don't have any draft picks to get them.. need to get creative, roll some dice.

But I heard that Rodrigue was also a great pick, not just the family member of an Oilers goalie coach.

You can imagine a kid of a goalie coach probably has less upside out of junior, he had top coaching his whole life, a lot less room for technique improvement. He hasn't moved the needle much since his time in the AHL (2nd season), only played 22 games combined this year in the AHL/ECHL.. not a lot of games at all in the last 2 seasons actually..
2020-21 Bakersfield Condors AHL 11 0 0 562 28 2 1 2.99 4 5 0 236 0.894 1 0 0

Rodrigue is still young, turns 22 in June but he hasn't exactly shot the lights out in the pros yet. 3.5 goals per game and barely over .900 in the ECHL isn't exactly great.

In looking at how many teams in the NHL have questions about goaltending and it sure seems like there is a lack of decent goalies in the NHL. I am not seeing a ton of these can't miss back ups just looking for their chance. A lot of guys who pretty up in the air. So it sure is looking like the Oilers badly need to be growing their own. Hopefully Skinner is one and then start bringing in more guys and see who can stick.
It's his first year in North America so maybe that's a big part of it but given Konovolov put up some pretty darn good numbers in the KHL and that league is probably close if not on par with the AHL, I was expecting him to be a little better. .893 isn't that great. Still young.
Rodrigue. A bit younger. Seems like more of a longer term project. Numbers aren't very good in Baker and just above .900 in the ECHL. Still young. I am surprised at how undersized he is. 6'1, 156 lbs that seems really skinny to me.
So bringing in another guy like Fanti who might be a little farther along than a Rodrigue is probably a good thing.

So what's the rule on these signings? Is it AHL only or could he come and play in the NHL right now?

From my understanding, he's on an ATO for the remainder of this season for the AHL, then his contract kicks in next year. So he couldn't come to the NHL this year.

And he going to Bakersfield for the rest of this season on an ATO. Per Ryan Holt, Condors PBP guy, on Twitter,
Can't have Dusty Schwartz and Sylvain Rodrigue teaching a young goalie too soon the techniques of netminding and how to become a mainstay on the Oiler roster.

This signing makes me feel infinitely better about the trade back with Wallstedt staring them in the face. But still miffed. Lol Wallstedt and Fanti would be an amazing prospect duo.

I personally have never been a fan of drafting a goalie high. Generally takes so long for them to develop if they develop at all. I keep hearing a ton of good things about Bourgault. He's still in junior but he sure is sounding good.

Again, this is a tired worn out cliche from sports reporters. It need not always be so, and certainly when people have had star goalies, they're in the NHL much sooner than that. Here's a few:
Grant FUhr - drafted 1981, rookie season 1981-82
Martin Brodeur - drafted 1990, rookie season 1991-92
Roberto Luongo - drafted 1997, rookie season 1999-2000
Carey Price - drafted 2005, rookie season 2007-08
Andrei Vasilevskiy - drafted 2012, rookie season 2014-15
Marc-Andre Fleury - drafted 2003, rookie season 2003-04 (albeit out of the NHL for year 2 before back full-time
If you draft a really good goalie early, he absolutely can be in your lineup relatively soon. There's an argument that the Oilers probably should have brought Dubnyk along faster, as opposed to his long, convoluted path to the NHL while the Oilers goofed around with their farm team.
I'm willing to bet Wallstedt is an NHL goalie inside of 3 years.

Slats did chuck Fuhr down to Moncton in his sophomore season so it wasn't as though he established himself as #1 right off the bat. I think we've seen two decades of garbage goalie coaching, management goalie shaming and organizational icompetence regarding that position. I think Hyman was right following the Calgary game, can't blame the goalies for 9-2 ES.

In his sophomore season, Fuhr spent 10 games in the minors, but more of the time in Edmonton with the Oilers. He still played 32 games in the bigs, and I mean, he was still just 20 years old at the start of that year. I think it still underlines my point that goalies don't all need 6-7 years to develop.
Moog, spent most of his sophomore season in the AHL, but again, drafted in 1980, plays his first NHL games that year, by his third season after draft he's a full-time Oiler. And he was a 7th round pick!

"That’ll go down, in 71 years of Komets hockey, as one of the best fights on Coliseum ice. It got The Jungle rocking and it got the team together, and it was just a statement." -- Head Coach Ben Boudreau
Ben Boudreau:
“Fants, I never once expected that from him. I don’t think anybody expected that from mild-mannered Ryan Fanti. But let me tell you, he may be the toughest guy in our room and you just never knew it.”
Ben Boudreau:
“At the end of the day, we’re in the entertainment business. And I’ve got to say, if you bought a ticket tonight, you were entertained. The only people who weren’t happy were the Wheeling fans. That game had everything.”
Fanti:
“It’s obviously something as a goalie you think about here and there,” said Ryan Fanti, adding there was opportunity fight in juniors that didn’t pan out and in college, it’s not really a thing. “This was probably my first real opportunity that it worked out."
"A good crowd, too, that I got to do it in front of here. It was a different and cool night.”
"Kind of everything came together in a sense that we were already winning the game and were already comfortable in a win," Ryan Fanti said. "I didn’t have to cross the red line myself and it just kind of happened like that."

If you're picking your spots, that's a great match-up. You have the reach and size advantage on him!

Losing that fight can cause a major power shift in your home though. Probably not best to risk that.
