Flames can't catch the Oilers now.
Only the Canucks left among teams that could keep us out of the post-season, but it would require them running the table without us even picking up a loser point in our remaining games.
Next game is against Vancouver, so we can secure the spot with authority.

Loved seeing those sad sack Flames heading off to the ice.
Geez, Habs could catch the Jets by the looks of it. The East might not get that super series they want.

Would be the first time since Gretzky vs. Lafleur in 1981 that the Oilers and Habs meet in a playoff series...

Either a Vancouver loss or an Oilers OTL and we officially clinch. Magic number is 1. LFG!!
Calgary officially cannot catch us.

I'm hoping Smith only plays 1 of the next 4 games vs Nucks. Get Kostko and Stalock some work.

If it helps, it wasn't pretty by design. Tippett clearly favoured a more defensive structure after the first and the Oilers weren't nearly as aggressive the rest of the way. I don't like that style, but it looked to be the coach's call.

Tipp has already said they’re wanting to get the group going here with the remaining games. They won’t rest anyone out of injury fear unless they’re banged up already.

I'd not even send Smith to Vancouver for the first 2 games. Give 1 each to the backups. Start Smith Thurs at home. Backup on Saturday. Probably split the games with the Habs. Then have Smith start the finale.
Don't let him get cold, but stop with starting him 90% of the time.

I’m glad we are done with the Flames. They are the easiest team to hate.
What’s the atmosphere in Edmonton? People getting geared up for it, has been snuffed out by the pandemic?

Its gotta be a damper. I wonder what the story is going to be for Canadian teams when the league pares down to 4 teams in the playoffs? US buildings will probably be full, and even if there's cross border NHL travel, will there be fans in the Canadian building?

Off topic:
Every time I hear them say that Draisaitl has passed Sturm as the highest scoring German-born player, I feel the need to refer them to a player named Dany Heatley and have a look at his point totals and place of birth
https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=49508
I know that Heatley is not a "German" but I think by every metric he would be considered "German-born". You need to amend your statement to "German born and German raised/trained".
Hopefully in 3-5 years, Draisaitl will pass Heatley and make the point moot.
On topic:
Happy to put the nearly final nail in Calgary' coffin.

With the relaxation of lock down here in the UK, one went out with friends yesterday and had rather too much to drink. So it's always good to wake up and watch the game on catch up and see we sent the Flames to the golf course
Wouldn't have minded Archie making that pass for the 4th goal had it been McLeod for his first goal or even Russell had he been playing to. However to rob McDavid as he did wasn't cool.
Is it me or has JP got quicker as the season has wore on? He seems so much faster now than he's ever been before.

Here’s Tkachuk “living rent free” in the Oilers’ heads.
He’s a joke, haha even the tiny Barrie pushing this guy around.

I actually felt like last night was the most I noticed him this season. Turned into two 4 on 4's (one with Barrie in the box and one with Nuge). I'd say we win the trade off because, while both of those are good players off our roster, theirs was hurt more by his absence. The rest of the matchups, other than the odd stick jab he got away with, he seemed to be spinning his wheels.
I think the feedback from his pest antics got to him and he felt the push to answer the bell more this year rather than just annoying and ignoring people. He's better suited to a Marchand sort of role than an Iginla one and it showed in his production and the Flames' results.
You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you can get a lottery pick.

I was a big fan of that victory because it was a hard fought, playoff style of game. It was fairly tight checking, both teams got excellent goaltending. Game was physical, some penalties, very similar to what you see in playoffs.
I thought the Oilers were the better team for most of the game expect maybe 10 mins in the second. I thought Markstrom again stood on his head and kept them in the game as the Oilers were close to blowing them out in the first. The Oilers stuck to it. Smith made all the saves he had too and except for a short spurt in the second, I thought they didn't give up a lot.
I thought Neal didn't have much. Maybe he isn't capable this season of playing a lot of games in a row. I thought Jones had a rough game. The rest of the defense was good. Nurse was a tower of power out there.
I thought Leon had a rough night the previous game, he was excellent last night.

Would love to be a fly on the wall when Tipp tells Connor that he’s going to sit for a game. Bonkers.
