Jack is 1000x better than Singh, glad we appear to be done with that debacle. Singh was a complete DEI hire, shoe horned into a position he really didn't deserve

I'm of course shocked to hear you dropping "DEI hire" in to the conversation. You always seem the most tolerant and accepting of all Oilfans!

Thanks for the compliment...I am very tolerant and accepting. I just don't accept people being elevated to a position they so obviously don't deserve based on factors other than merit. It's not like Singh was some up and comer who had paid his dues. Singh was boring, monotone and overall not very good at PxP

He was plucked out of obscurity and put into a prime position...replacing Jack for all national and playoff games much to the dismay of the majority of fans until SN couldn't ignore the backlash anymore and was finally corrected this season icon_thumbsup

Actually, having met him when I was at Mt Royal (being a couple of the only Oilers fans walking around campus), he was doing broadcasts back then and then was on local TV in Cowtown. He paid his own way to Toronto for the weekly Punjabi broadcasts like 15 years ago.

I don't like his style, but saying he didn't put in the work is pure ignorance.

Yeah - it's easy (and kind of racist) to just assume that someone hasn't done any work to get somewhere when you don't make any effort to see what their history is. It's not like Sportsnet just picked a random guy off the street here to fill some quota.

See - again, you don't know enough about his background, but you've assumed due to his race that he was just handed the job. You don't know who else was considered at the same time as him, or why Sportsnet selected him but he was doing the job at a local level first.

Despite your lack of insight there, you've once again claimed that his race is the only reason he had that job - which is more telling about you than about him.

In this case we know he was a really bad broadcaster, which of course is an opinion, when he was handed the late night HNIC games. He's mostly adequate now after a decade and half on the job, but has been demoted to the #4 guy. This is the problem with DEI. It's impossible to know if anyone has earned their job on merit because we've decided race and sex is now more important to the hiring problem. C'est la vie, we voted for this.

Personally I think it's far more important to be able to talk about the costs and benefits to decisions like these rather than trying to shut down all conversation by lobbing accusations around. In this case, Gator might just want his hockey games to come with, you know, good play by play.

Personally, I'm just glad he stopped singing after goals.

No one at Rogers or Sportsnet was voted in. There's no government mandate to make sure PBP guys are ethnically diverse. You're talking about a private company making a decision on a hire - a company who historically has made a large number of really poor hiring decisions around their broadcasts. Singh isn't close to the worst person they've had on their team and many of those guys have kept their roles a really long time. I mean, these guys had Glenn Healy as a major part of their broadcast for years. They gave Mark Spector a primetime role for a while. Nick Kypreos was the STAR for them for ages!!!

I'd say Singh was and is worse than those guys, but again, that's just an opinion. Early Greg Millen was the absolute worst, but that's just me.

I think it's awfully naive to think private companies are pressured by governments and the people who elect them. But at least you're finally onboard with this being a "really poor hiring decision" :)

To Dallas it shall be, on Tuesday then. Oilers vs Stars Volume 8.

Looks like Wednesday for Game 1:

And they make our first home game at 1PM local time, sigh.

Something is weird here. Katy Perry has a concert at the venue same day same time for game 1.

Looks like Katy got moved aside?

Looks like that’s the case. I’d be livid if I was a fan flying in for that show. Pretty strange they didn’t just start the series on Tuesday.

Unless they can re-schedule quickly, which is unlikely with a global tour schedule.. they'll have to refund all the money.. but on the other hand.. maybe Katy the Amazon Astronaut didn't sell out anyway? :)

I would be looking to sell high on 14 in the off season if possible.

Not a chance.. when he's healthy he's the Oilers best defenceman (excluding PP)

Not getting my hopes up too much.. Stetcher has been a beast.. good placeholder while Ekholm gets to 95%

He's about to be 35 and just suffered what appears to be a serious soft tissue injury. Those don't tend to heal completely very quickly. And he plays the kind of game that would suggest he isn't a young 35 already.

And he is one of the few assets that you could possibly get a decent return for to get younger/cheaper. Maybe for once the Oilers do what they never seem to be able to do - trade a player when his value is at or near it's peak.

I agree with this 100%. Ekholm is going to get worse, not better. If they can get good value for him, he should be moved.
At his healthiest, I doubt we see him come close to the player he was a couple years ago.

I suspect this would be the initial schedule:

- If Dallas wins tonight we will start on Tuesday May 20th. Katy Perry concert at the American Airlines centre on the 21st so their first 2 home games would have to be sandwiched around that.

- If Dallas wins game 7 on Monday, start on the 22nd.

- If Jets win game 7 on Monday I think start on the 22nd, as there is a basketball game at the Canada Life Centre on the 23rd to sandwich around.

Looking like 5-7 full days off

I think it is really hard to judge any players from their regular season this year. Basically Drai and Perry were our only players that were on for more than even 40% of the season. Maybe Nurse too but he set a crazy low bar going into this year. He really just did the min of what you would expect him to IMO.

It was a weird season and we were 5 mins from going down 0-3 against the Kings, and a lucky bounce goal folllowed by a ridiculous challenge, followed by a crazy PP goal we have never done before finally snapping the team out of it. Even came minutes away from going down 1-3 until a stupid play by Byfield. Maybe that’s when we actually finally snapped out of the stupor of the season :)

In any case Ek at least looks like he is skating well again

https://x.com/tsnryanrishaug/status/1924152426904555896?s=46

Seems he will return. Let’s hope he is in for some regular season redemption with the rest of the group.

Love it. Got Dallas right where we want them :)

Carolina would be my pick. If Florida is able to beat the Canes with 1 day of rest between series and then gets a week off before the finals I will be pretty worried about them in the finals. Also think the ref/league favouritism factor works for Florida much more than it would for Carolina. The Oilers getting Carolina back after 2 decades for McDavid’s first cup would be a pretty damn good story.

Judy checked game 1. Looks like Carolina down 3-1 and Andersen being the best goalie of the playoffs is in serious question already. Sigh.

Yeah, Florida's first goal was exactly how the Panthers get away with stuff. Rod was livid and so would I have been.

Yeah saw that penalty.. Aho gets crosschecked twice after the play and then cuffs the guy.. and gets 2..

That being said.. man Carolina sure can't score goals.. looked almost Toronto like in the O-zone.

They had a load of time off between games suspect they'll get back in it.

I forgot that Carolina has been swept in 3 straight conference finals (08/09, 18/19, 22/23). They haven't won even 1 conference finals game since 2006. That's a pretty crazy stat to have hanging over the teams head.

They better win their next game, or it's gonna be looking like the sweep again.
