So generally I hate these super generic catch-all threads because they suck big news in and it just gets lost, but at the same time the Tampa/Florida game the other night was crazy and it needs somewhere to be mentioned, but probably not big enough for its own thread so here we go with the 2025-26 Out of Town Thread.

NHL Supplementary Discipline seems to be consistently inconsistent. These teams already have some bad blood, with Ekblad injuring Hagel in the playoffs last year. He didn't even get a penalty on the play but did get suspended after (a rarity for a player on a Gregory Campbell team).

Then on Oct. 2, AJ Greer hit Hagel, then sucker punched him starting a melee. He got a fine. So two nights later, all hell broke loose. Two minutes in, Scott Sabourin labeled Ekblad, and when he got up, punched him a couple times. Ekblad left the game, Sabourin got a match penalty. Five minutes later, Roman Schmidt cross-checked Verhaeghe and got 5 and a game. 40 seconds after that, Verhaeghe hit Girgensons from behind and got a major and a game misconduct (no supplementary discipline). Six minutes later and Moser drilled Boqvist from behind and got his own major and ejection. Then there was a period and a half of fighting (punctuated by Florida Panthers goals - they won 7-0). Four minutes in to the third, Mikkola got his own game misconduct. He didn't leave, and assisted on a goal later - which was struck off the board and he was finally sent away. There were twelve game misconducts, 6 10-minute misconducts and two match penalties (Bjorkstrand also got a match 4 minutes in to the third).

The supplemental discipline after that game: For Tampa - Schmidt & Goncalves got fined. Sabourin and Moser have hearings and will end up getting suspended. For Florida? Nothing. Not even a fine for Verhaeghe for his hit from behind.

No one hurt either - Ekblad is apparently practicing and expected to play the season opener.

All that said - I hope that teams target the Panthers relentlessly this year. They are such a dirty team and get given so much latitude to get away with it, the only real solution is to fight fire with fire. If it means a couple of guys get a night off, oh well. It's just the regular season.

Yeah I freaking hate Florida.. and especially their pretentious clown of a coach Maurice.. that guy just loves listening to himself pontificate.. just a greasy, slimy, d-bag.. Florida has the no-tax state advantage that the NHL never acknowledges.. that even Marchand states is the big reason they can retain players there.. and then they have the Greggy Campbell's daddy advantage sitting up in NHL Corp.. his office being right next door to that cartoon Parros..

It'll be interesting to see what happens with the Leafs.. Bennet took out their #1 goaltender and ruined their playoffs last year.. and Berube is the kind of guy that won't be settling for anything less than retribution in a regular season game..

No love lost with the Oilers either. Those clowns not just took our Cup but rubbed our noses in it last June. And they're so douchey and dirty all the way. The league just wants to look the other way, so that means teams have to make them pay the price - especially in games that don't mean as much as the playoff match-ups.

Josh Brown can get the call-up for that one.

I don't think Oilers really have a neutralizer anymore.. Kane was kinda it for us.. Brown isn't that scary, Nurse is a middle weight, and the jury is out for Fred IMO. Podz can throw though.. Walman ?

Where you really get teams back is on hellacious hits.. the ones that leave separated shoulders, wonky hips, and broken ribs.. fights are pretty well sanitized these days.. more show than injury caused. with the speeds McDavid gets to.. with one hit on a forecheck he'd end a guys season.. but that's not his game.. we need guys that can do that.. missiles of mayhem.

I don't think you need a Georges Laraque - in fact those guys have it tough nowadays because no one will drop the gloves with them. The Oilers have a bunch of guys who are willing combatants and assuming we haven't had a lot of nights like that, and that hopefully the Panthers may have just had another with Tampa a week earlier - it starts to take it's toll. And then hopefully the Leafs come and scrap them all again a week later. Sam Bennett had 4 fights all last season, so three or four in two weeks would be a heavy lift for him.

Four games for Sabourin. They reference that this was vengeance and that they don't like that.

Moser gets 2 games for boarding.

I still don't understand how the Verhaeghe hit isn't exactly the same other than the aforementioned Gregory Campbell Factor.

NHL Rule 70.10 reads as follows:
“Any player who has been ordered to the dressing room by the officials and returns to his bench or to the ice surface for any reason before the appropriate time shall be assessed a game misconduct and shall be suspended automatically without pay for the next ten games.”


I look forward to to seeing the cartwheels the NHL will do to explain why Mikkola is not getting a 10 game suspension.
