God only knows. After being handily beat 2 games in a row with the last game a complete no show, you'd think the team would want to come out hard and play with a little pride but who knows at this point.

Secondary market prices
Ticketmaster: 34 CAD
Stubhub: 23 USD
The communist in government are right, the free market no longer works. Both those prices are higher then they're worth.

It has been said in here many times. The only way real change will happen is if fan apathy sets in and it starts showing up on the balance sheet. As long as the fans keep coming and the money flows, why change anything.
For the balance sheet. All those tickets are already paid for so it won't hurt the Oilers this year but I am sure the team sees the resale numbers and that would be extremely concerning to them as it shows fan apathy. So maybe change will actually happen finally.

Apathy sets in every year, right around this time for some reason, but by June everyone is all hyped up again. I can't figure out why, but I can recognize the pattern.

For all their flaws, the one thing that Lowe, MacTavish, Nicholson, et al have been good at is selling hope and manipulating public perception. It's helpful that the local media are more than willing to play along (and even the national media to some extent. How many times has Friedman written about all the due diligence Bobby Burgers is out there doing).
It's why Lowe and gang all still have jobs. And it's why I have zero faith that whoever this group hires is going to come in and make meaningful changes. Nicholson has pretty much telegraphed it. To them the issue with the Oilers hasnt been any of the moves they made (because regardless of whether they admit it or not, that group was 100% on board with everything Chia did). It's been character and guys just not wanting it. So they'll go out and try to find the 17th version of Adam Larsson/Matt Hendricks/Milan Lucic/Kris Russell that will finally be the one to turn this group around.
Oilers Goal Differential
17/18: 234 GF / 263 GA (-29)
18/19: 232 GF / 274 GA (-42)
19/20 (82 game pace): 257 GF / 254 GA (+3) in 64 games
2021 (82 game pace):269 GF / 235 GA (+34) after 38 games

This is very true. The Oilers are an extraordinarily bad hockey organization, but they're a very good PR firm. And real estate, they're good at that too.

Lol. 8-0-1 gives the mighty Oil a 34% chance. It might be time to admit defeat.

From the Oiler website
Lines at Thursday's morning skate appeared as follows:
Forwards
Nugent-Hopkins - McDavid - Kassian
Lucic - Draisaitl - Chiasson
Rieder - Cave - Gagner
Gambardella - Brodziak - Currie
Defence
Klefbom-Larsson
Nurse-Russell
Sekera-Benning
Goalies
Koskinen
Stolarz
Khara will miss tonight's game. Hitchcock expects he will be re-evauluated tomorrow to determine if he will be good to go on Saturday.
I kind of wish Gravel would get a chance to play once in a while. As for Rieder, I guess he will stay under that bus for a while yet. Too bad. The polls projecting his chances of scoring have been highlights of discussion about the Oilers recently. My predicton is Rieder will next score goals (multiple) in May at the IIHF tournament for Germany.

Are you trying to say the other 73 games weren't MUST WIN? No wonder the Oilers didn't show up.

It's gut check time! What do they really have to play for now other than padding stats for the big two and trying to get Tobie his first goal of the season ? ( Or maybe even providing entertaining hockey for the fans ? ) You know, the folks that keep coming back for more of the same torture. I don't expect much but you never know. Important game for Columbus though.

Gregor got some good quotes from Hitch:
Quote: | The Oilers defenders struggle getting the puck out of their zone. I brought it up with Ken Hitchcock today.
“I don’t see us struggling to move it quickly, I see us struggling to use the middle of the ice,” said Hitchcock. “If you look at any teams who are quick in transition and moving the puck they find the middle of the ice. There is a risk and a dynamic to play that way. You can’t be a quick transition team when you are putting it on the boards. You end up chipping it out and chasing.”
This led me to my next question.
“Further to that, I think it’s safe to say you aren’t coaching them to ring it around the boards. So then do you see it as a lack of confidence to use the middle of the ice, or a lack of ability to use the middle of the ice?”
“I would say a combination of a lot of things. Sometimes the support isn’t there quick enough. Sometimes it is a little bit of impatience in the middle of the ice, and sometimes we aren’t looking for that option. Sometimes under pressure the first option is to get it the hell out. If you do that, it is fine, but then you have to win the next battle. And the next battle is your (winger on boards) has to get it out.
“You look at three of the scoring chances for the Blues that weren’t goals in the first period, all three got out to the winger on the boards and none of them got it out. It is a combination of things, but I think the first thing is getting back to position, what we call spots and spacing. You have to get back there with a sense of urgency, and when you don’t have it you are too far away and the D have no options and they put it on the boards,” said Hitchcock.
This is something I am going to monitor closely down the stretch: how often are the forwards in position to receive a pass in the middle or the ice, but the D choose to ring it? Or, how often do the defends have no option but to hammer it around the boards?

Guess it's nice to hear that the ring around and off the boards is not the actual game plan. He wants guys transitioning faster using the middle of the ice...the players just can't do it. I'm sure we can all agree at this point it's more a personnel issue than it is a coaching issue. Most wingers and many of our D just aren't quick and smart enough to pull these plays off with any regularity. Not an easy life for D, need a quick step when you get the puck to get away for forecheckers, need to get your head up and find the pass option and you need to send the accurate pass. Most teams in the NHL have been looking for this skill for many years now and drafting and acquiring players that can do it to fill our their 3 pairs with varying levels of skill doing it successfully. We just caught on about this a little while ago.
Gotta question hitch a bit too. Not long ago he was thanking the heavens for the cycle stoppers Manning and Petrovic. Maybe he was just being nice to Chia though :) He seems to be completely done with both now.

I have never been less interested in Oilers hockey. The only thing that gets me to watch is McDavid.
I often forget there is going to be a game until I see the pre-game thread here. I also forget about puck drop until my Score app reminds me its about to start.
Never throw games but I couldnt care less if they win or lose. I hope we are on the count down to the last games for a lot of these guys in Oilers uniforms.
