I'd love to know what the Jackets were thinking, but this is cool.

I didn't want us picking, but that's because I didn't think this was a possibility. Love it. Makes it easier to deal a $6m man for a dman.

Wow. The forward group on the Oilers is officially insane.

Just find some lugheads to pass the puck up the ice.

If the only FWD's we get rid of are Pouliot and Korpikoski and we manage to sign Lucic, it is pretty ridiculous..

Even if Pouliot is kept and Lucic isn't signed... still looks like a great top 9 and a gritty energy line. Still lacking lacking lacking on the backend though.

Never really considered him as an option once we were slotted at 4, but hey outside of RHD a right shot winger is the next largest area of weakness. Nice Pick!

Makes it a a lot easier to trade Ebs now if we need to.

The Oilers now still only have two right handed forwards in the top 9.

Ha! Thanks Columbus.

How did they not get anything from us trading down? I'm sure Chia would have given up something small if he knew #3 was available to him.

Seems Kekalainen simply got owned by Chia:

http://www.todaysslapshot.com/from-the-ice/kekalainen-actual ly-thought-deal-done/

Chia got the hint that Kekalainen didn't want to take Puljujarvi and obviously didn't show his hand on who he would take leaving the possibility open that he could take Dubois, which made it impossible for Kekalainen to go lower than the #4 pick to get his guy. So, Chia backed out of a small deal to move to #3 saving us an asset to get the same guy.

Kekalainen: So MacT, who do you like in this draft?

MacT: We Love Puljujarvi, we think he would be like Kurri was to Gretzky playing with McDavid. We would do almost anything to get him.

Kekalainen: Anyone else you like?

MacT: We are pretty set on getting Tkachuk at #4. We love his gritty play and he had a great Memorial Cup. We think he has Rocket Richard Potential.

Kekalainen: Oh, no one else?

MacT: Nope, those are our 2 guys, we figured we would save some time only scouting guys we expect to go #3 and #4. I was going to see Laine too, but...it's a long story.

Kekalainen: Well, I would consider trading down to #4.

MacT: Oh, wow, that's great news. How about we throw in a 3rd round pick for the swap?

Kekalainen: Let me get back to you... Oh, Vancouver is offering a 1st next year.

MacT: Oh, well... We really want to get this done, since it's for the next Kurri and all. How about 2 1sts?

Kekalainen: Let me get back to you... Vancouver is offering 2 1sts and Horvat.

MacT: Oh..ok. How about 2 1sts and Nuge?

Kekalainen: Done.

MacT: SWEET!

My thoughts are quite simple: It would have been stupid to pick Sergachev at #4. If they wanted him, fine, but Arizona is there at #7, badly wanting Matthew Tkachuk. You flip the #4 and the #7 and pick up another piece. Reaching at #4 when there is a team that would move up and you both get the player you want... that would be silly.

Puljujarvi falling to us was a gift, and it might have saved the Oilers from making a poor decision.

It's entirely possible that the Oilers had a deal in place to move down at that point, or were going to try to make a deal to move down. But according to what Chiarelli said, they thought there was a chance that Puljujarvi might fall. And once that happened any deal to move down was off.

Oilers Goal Differential
17/18: 234 GF / 263 GA (-29)
18/19: 232 GF / 274 GA (-42)
19/20 (82 game pace): 257 GF / 254 GA (+3) in 64 games
2021 (82 game pace):269 GF / 235 GA (+34) after 38 games

Chiarelli read that perfect. Really impressed with that read and how he held on to #4 to see what Columbus would do.

That makes 100% sense. But so does Columbus making a deal to grab an asset while moving down to draft Dubois later.

Unless Chia convinced him he was taking Dubois at 4 and CLB didn't have the guts to call his bluff.

1. I was hoping for a trade.

2. I was happy with drafting Matthew Tkachuk if we drafted #4

3. I am ecstatic that we got the consensus #3 at #4...thanks CLB!

This is how I see it:

We needed to trade from a position of strength to fix a position of weakness. This draft just increased our position of strength more than was expected going in. So we are definitely set for a big trade to get some D?

The president thinks he has the ideal male body.
It's hard to disagree that he has the ideal male body.

My guess is that Montreal wanted Dubois, when that went to Columbus, the deal was off. No Subban today cry

2015/2016 - This Kool-Aid tastes like McDavid flavoured Drain-O.
2016/2017 - This Kool-Aid is starting to taste like juice.
2017/2018 - I'm drinking this Kool-Aid, in hopes that it's Drain-O.
2018/2019 - Another round of Drain-O, good sir!

...or they take Sergachev and feel they have a guy they can mold into a replacement, and deal Subban

Even when we lose the lottery we win! Thanks CBJ!

He's got GREAT wheels as well, big body with hands, shot, perfect compliment for McD. He can play next year if needed, or not. He's a BIG kid, said he needs to get stronger in the summer. He'll be a load.

One thing he needs to do.. needs to enroll in some summer ESL courses :)

Chiarelli has so many more management options now, might actually be able to orchestrate a D-man transaction before October.

Going after Lucic may not be as pressing now.

McDAVID! Oh YEAH Baby!!
Tic-Tac-Tao!
Keep on Rockin' in the Free World
P. Chiarelli math.. T. Hall = A. Larsson, Yak= bag o'pucks (OK he got one right...) K. Russell = $4.1 M+NMC, G. Reinhart= M. Barzal + A. Beauvillier, J. Eberle = R. Spooner,

This is a nice surprise, but does not make us a playoff team next year. I still fear year 11 to break the record. That pick should have been leverage to get someone for now, not 2-3 years away.

I find this interesting:

Puljujarvi has played two years of pro in Finland. He was best player at WJC. He could start in AHL if #Oilers want.

May not be an awful idea? At least for half the year perhaps? You know injuries will occur in the top 6, then maybe he come up? Similar to Drai?

And more importantly not have to force him into the NHL.

If he plays a year in the A, does that burn an RFA year? It's a pro league after all.

I don't think the AHL counts as long as he doesnt play more than 10 NHL games. But I could be wrong.

Better not have been without a trade down. But from 4 on this year it was a crap shoot, so glad he fell to us. Did anyone else notice how stunned the Oilers were? They didnt even have a name bar prepared for him lol.
