Good game. Smith bungle was the difference. That and McDavid’s inability to draw a penalty. What a bum.

take away one SMITH puck handling error, one bad pinch by BEAR, and one-sided reffing... not a horrible game.

...unless we can't find a replacement for JJ. icon_neutral

Not a lot Smith could have done on 3 of those, the 4th was a bad break, hopping over his stick in front of the crease line, and then he couldn't touch it without taking a penalty, both 84 and 6 had pealed away in anticipation of a pass..

Lost two players, Barrie and Kharira (LTIR IMHO), Bear had a bad game, Nuge was set to "mild", and the refs (Joanette) stepped into a time machine and were set back to Sutter-mode, hack-whack-trip-hold-hook. How does Sutter get 3 PP's and McD, LD can't draw one?
Trick question, you just refuse to call them.

Nuge -3 and provides the screen on the GWG, made this game difficult after fighting back from 2 down. Has to be better than that. I didn't think Smith had his best game either, baffling on that 3rd goal against. 2 mistakes that ended up in the net, reminiscent of old times.

Boys had some good chances that didnt go. Connor late. JP had a great op with seconds left.

Gotta end this little streak.

Yeah he was outsized for that one, Ritchie is a plug, shouldn't have taken the fight, the refs were pretty slow in stepping in as well. Oil have nobody else to take these now, Nurse isn't, he's too valuable, Kassian has a broken hand he's protecting, probably only guy is Archibald (?)

Watching Nuge back-check is like watching molasses, no urgency, like-what-ever, he could step on the gas and get even with the guy, but instead he coasts so that all he can do is reach in from behind with his stick, needs to be pre-emptive, start thinking ahead of the play. Maybe he's been a winger too long, starting to act like a winger that doesn't back check.

Regarding contract talks.. I'd offer him 5 if this is what he's going to play like.

I don't know, screen or no screen, that fourth shot was right at him and he let it bleed right through. And then the glare - which is pretty preposterous on a night where no gaffe was bigger than his on the third goal.

Another game where a bounce or two changes things in the Oilers favour, but this was a worse loss than the one against the Canucks, because they shot themselves in the foot a few too many times.

One more comment on the officiating. What exactly would it take to convince the NHL to call their own rule book? I just don't understand what they think it accomplishes when they allow people to hook, hold and interfere constantly. Do they think that's what brings parity? Do they think people want to watch the stars battle through constant illegal play? I don't get it.

Pretty short duration glare if there was one, I think its a nothing burger, you're sounding like Hrudey!
Regardless, that was a lack of interest/effort on Nuge, get out of the way or get down and block the shot.

Tipp in post gamer says both Khaira and Barrie are day to day...

Says JJ was feeling good after the first and they’ll see where it goes.

Barrie was okay at intermission then came to the bench for the third but wasn’t feeling it. ... upper body, per Tipp

I mean I hate to say it, bc it’s not him... but the dude can afford a fine. Something as simple as Connor saying to Rishaug or Gregor postgame about his displeasure. He sure had that look during the game of “f these f f refs”

Says JJ was feeling good after the first and they’ll see where it goes.

Barrie was okay at intermission then came to the bench for the third but wasn’t feeling it. ... upper body, per Tipp

I think Barrie tweaked his back.. I saw him at the start of the 3rd with the familiar back injury twist-check.. he should have stayed in the room and get ice on it.

JJK is out for a while, need to bolster the center position, Mr. McLeod .. tick-tock

I mean I hate to say it, bc it’s not him... but the dude can afford a fine. Something as simple as Connor saying to Rishaug or Gregor postgame about his displeasure. He sure had that look during the game of “f these f f refs”

Actually I think it should be Tippet making the call, if McD said anything it would be blown up by the media in a negative "McDavid's-a-Whiner" campaign, exactly what the cretins are starving for, McD knows this, and is smart not to say anything. Burke used to do it with the Sedins all the time, called out the refs, they eventually got the calls.

Alternate: What McD could do is let the NHL Corp know (not publicly) if they think so little of him utilizing his talents, that he opt not to help the NHL with any of its publicity/promotional campaigns, "Hey NHL, so you're saying F me? well then.. F you."

My dream is the Oilers win the Cup (despite the refereeing) and when Bettman starts to hand it to him with a speech, McD rips it out of hands, cutting Count Chokula off mid sentence, ignoring the putz, and races to his teammates with Cup in hand.

Hmm, don't like how that turned into a breakaway so easily. D bailing pretty quick before the puck is even over center.

Everyone broke the second McDavid had it. Then he and Nuge were closest to dube 🤷🏻‍♂️

Nurse was ahead of McD after he passed it to him, why was the other D-man not back, was that Bear?

It was Bear or Russell, I think Bear.

Yeah it was Bear, Tippet revealed that on that play, Bear's skate blade had broken, and he was on his way to the bench for a change (long change), therefore why we didn't see him where you'd expect him to be on that rush, bad luck that McD (once in a 1000 times) bobbles a pass, Bear breaks a skate, and its turned the other way for a break away .. Bad luck as well on the goal the puck jumps over Smitty's stick into the no-play zone.

I had a bad feeling about the Ritchie fight before it happened, Khaira took so many huge shots in the Gudbranson fight a few days earlier that I’m sure he wasn’t 100%. He gets hit with one by Ritchie and is out. I’m sure he was concussed in the Ottawa fight.

I think he’s knocked out on his feet from the last punch.

Couple things from my eye from last night.

Again the Oilers didn’t show up to start the game. This thing has been creeping back into their game again, and is a concern.

In case there was a question about Barrie’s value to the team, last night was it. His absence was noticed.

This Sutter crap is overblown. Flambé weren’t that much better than the Oils. He did however recognize RNH was struggling mega and got the matchups against him. Tipper could see that, and in turn bounced him around as much as he could.
That said, Nuge is struggling mega. He sure hasnt done himself any favours with contract negations. We might be seeing his final days here. He’s just not a $6m player in my eyes, let alone more.

The officiating in this league is a joke, and I think it could be by design. Keep all the teams within striking distance and fan bases engaged. There just seems to be some bizarre calls and non calls for every team in the league, which favour the lesser team. It’s a weird thing to witness, as it usually goes the other way.

Ah well. On to the next one I guess. Show up on time and let’s hope Barrie is ok.

In fairness to Hall, I've wanted to throw a waterbottle at Eakins all season.

Officiating is absolutely by design. The refs know that their ability to keep working through the playoffs and significantly increase their take home for the year is dependent on them calling the games the way the NHL wants them too.

The NHL seems to think fans are more concerned with crappy teams staying relevant for longer than they are with seeing a good product, so they are fine with allowing hooking and holding on star players. I think they believe that maybe it's a point of pride that the stars have to battle through that kind of thing and that somehow it makes the point that it's a tough game - which would be fine if it wasn't specifically against the rules of the game.

I don't know if it's fair to say the Oilers didn't start the game. The shots were only 5-4 in the first, so both teams were playing a bit of a chess match. The fact that it was open season for holding probably had an impact there too.

Smith gave them a free goal. I appreciate how his puck handling can be an asset sometimes but I wish he would dial it back a little. I can't figure out what he was trying to do on that goal. He totally crossed up his dman with whatever the hell he was doing and it cost them. Overall, it wasn't his best game.

McD did not have a good game. Just too many bad giveaways and he knows it. Missed several wide open shots. Hit the net man!!

Bear struggled a lot. Maybe it's the dreaded sophomore jinx but he is a shadow of the player he was last year. It's not just the concussion, he wasn't good before.

Neal sure has had the wheels fall off. If you are only going to put out a guy like him 7 mins, time to play someone else.

Lagesson had a rare off game.

Nuge. I don't know if maybe the contact is really bothering him but he's nothing like the player I am used to seeing. He's never been a line driver but 5 on 5, he's just not good at all this year and lately only marginally better on the PP. He got set up by Leon on a point blank, middle of the slot, as premium of a scoring chance as you get on the 1 and only PP and couldn't even hit the net. 5 on 5, it's next to nothing. He was -3. On the 4th goal, he sort of tried to check the guy but didn't go after him, kind of tried to block it but didn't really and in the process screened Smith. Smith reaction as he looked at Nuge said he screened him. Either take the man, commit to the block or get the hell out of the way. He didn't do all 3.

The reffing the last few games, just god awful. I don't like to blame refs too much but just call the damn penalties. Both ways. Guys getting tripped, held, thrown to the ground. McD just gets mauled. Fans want to see speed and skill. No one wants to watch hockey where the unskilled players and excel because the refs let them cheat.

For next game, I would put Kahun back in there for Neal no matter what the injury situation is. I would reunite the DRY line, not for the team but for Nuge. You can't have a guy playing 20 mins a night being almost a blackhole 5 on 5.

If Khaira is in:

Ennis/Kahun - McD - JP
Nuge - Leon - Yamo
Shore - Khaira - Arch
Kahun/Ennis - Haas - Chiasson

If Khaira is out:
Ennis/Kahun - McD - JP
Nuge - Leon - Yamo
Ennis/Kahum - Shore - Arch
Nygard - Haas - Chiasson

Does anyone think Tippett would go to his boy Smith and tell him to stop playing the damn puck? If he wants to go and stop it behind the net, great. If he stops it behind the goal and fires it up the boards the odd time, sure. But this whole BS of stick handling, trying to deke guys out. Last night on the goal he was almost in the freaking corner.

I think he did one really great stretch pass to someone and maybe fired it out a time or 2 on the PK. Great. But he could do 10 good things in a game but if you give up a goal like he did last night. Doesn't matter. You CAN'T do that ever. You literally handed them a free goal. It's one thing if a goalie just lets in a bad goal. Every goalie lets in a bad goal from time to time. But very few goalies in the league give up goals like he did because most do not go to the freaking corner to play pucks and try to stick handle around guys.

Smith - I do not believe that Tippett is going to tell Smith to stop that. He actually criticized the defence for not helping - although on the replay you can see that they are doing what Smith wants when he goes out to play the puck, looping out to give him passing lanes. The only thing you could say on that maybe is that they should have waited to make sure that he actually was going to get the puck first. Spector was banging the drum to protect Smith last night - for whatever reason, he seems to be the guy that everyone around the organization seems always hesitant to put any blame on, and who they're always in a hurry to praise when things do go well. It makes me really nervous that the team does believe that he can be the guy to take them in to the playoffs...it'll be painful if we give up assets for a run and don't get a goalie as part of the return, but I can definitely see it happening.

Saw someone post on twitter that Bear's PDO currently is 91%. That is extremely bad luck. It means that any mistake right now is ending up in the net, which amplifies things. I don't think he's playing as well as he did last year yet - he may still be hampered by whatever injury he had earlier this season, or he may just be a young defenceman with some growing pains. I do think that Oilers fans (not so much in here, but definitely on twitter) need to put away the pitchforks for young defencemen and stop expecting perfection - especially from puck-movers, who because they're moving the puck up ice more, and more likely to have times when they have a turnover. I think that's one of the reasons that people always love the young tough defenceman who just hammers it off the glass - it still cedes possession, but it looks more intentional. A stretch pass that gets intercepted is more dramatic and looks like a bigger mistake, even if the result is pretty much the same either way and the stretch pass can lead to a successful transition to offence, where off-the-glass-and-out just sets up another attack from the opposition 90% of the time.

I'm not worried about Neal and Chiasson's line not getting icetime yesterday. When down a couple goals, Tippett was playing the top two lines a lot more. There was one stretch last night where the shifts were 1-2-1-2-3-1. The guys at the bottom of the lineup were getting less time because Tippett felt his best chance to catch up was to play the top guys more. On top of that, with Khaira injured, the team was running short-handed on forward anyhow.
That almost always will reduce 4th line time since someone from the top lines is double shifting anyhow. I don't have any issue with that. No matter who we have on that fourth line last night they weren't going to get a lot of third period icetime since we were behind for all but 90 seconds.

I heard the Tippett comment about the dman not helping Smith ion the goal and it had me a bit baffled as well. To me a goalie needs to stay in his area. They used to have that box around the goal and behind. If you want to play the puck, stay in the damn box. Smith was just about in the corner when he half plays it then he just stops and leaves it for I don't know who. If Smith leaves the puck alone, Laggesson who would have been first to it, would have just had to chip it behind the goal to a waiting Larsson and it's out of the zone. You can physically see Lagesson see Smith going to the puck so he slows up, changes where he is going and heads to the boards to give Smith a target to pass too. If the dman sees your puck playing goalie going to get a puck and he doesn't ever just stop it, why would the dman think to skate to the goalie to stand beside him?

So I don't get Tippet blaming his dman on that. It's basically him sticking up for his boy Smith to try to justify a stupid play.
