It's a damn shame Carter Savoie and Mike Benning didn't get to go on a playoff run with the 2020 North Division Champion Sherwood Park Crusaders. I'm not saying they would have ended the Cru's 40 year championship drought, but I wanted to believe.

See, we've got our own AJHL scout. Is this kid any good?

Smaller, but it's not a stretch to think he might have similar upside as our 1st round pick.

That's great and at the same time completely horrible.

At the AJ level, yes. I think size will be an issue. If he figures out how to magically appear in open spots like Kailer Yamamoto does, he might make it, but I saw him as being pretty reliant on the extra time and space you get in Junior A. Playoffs would have been good to watch. I saw (stupid) Spruce Grove effectively neuter him in the 2019 series.

His numbers aren't that different from Holloway's AJHL stats...

I'm glad we aren't shying away from guys like this to draft all Coke machines still...I think the chances of this paying off are better than a bunch of Mitch Moroz clones...

His brother is going to be good, maybe it's in the genes?...pretty sure that's irrelevant, but I said it anyway .

Yeah he was pretty quiet in that final. Heard he might have been battling a flu, but don’t know if that was true.

Puck finds this kid all the time. He’s offensively brilliant and can snipe from anywhere, anytime. But yeah. He is not big.

With all the training and extra practice time that NCAA players have, I'm expecting Savoie can develop to another level by the time he's out, added fitness, strength, and high level coaching, Oilers could have a top six here.. he's already got an elite skill set.

Making his NCAA debut this weekend, he scored three times in two games. The guy is a sniper!

I was looking at his hockeydb profile. If he's really, 5'9", 192 that's my size and I have almost 30 years on him. If he's really that size at his age, I'm not worried about his height. This guy might be a steal as a fourth rounder.

Beauty goal by Savoie.. this kid can freaking snipe!
Latest goal.. against a good team North Dakota
https://twitter.com/TheOilKnight/status/1336459795533078528

4 games.. 5 goals, 1 Assist = 6 pts.. in the NCAA.. as an 18 year old freshman...

Wow..

..so much for the time required to adjust to playing in a tough league.. "against men"

Early.. but this kid is looking like an amazing pick at #100 weights

He was the guy who was ranked between #50 and #60 wasn't he? Anyone remember why he slid? just a fluke?

I wonder, if the league years finished normally and he'd gotten higher totals if he would've been there at #100?

You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you can get a lottery pick.

I think the frictional drag on his ranking was likely his junior league (AJHL) being a lower profile tier 2, which is not covered as extensively, and he's been tagged with being "not that big", and not a "speedster".
Skill guys like Savoie who outperform with minimal physical training, have a huge upside if they ever decide to train intensively, which a college program will enforce.

When can NHL teams sign their NCAA draft picks?

Any time - but they lose NCAA eligibility if they sign, so most of them want to put a couple years in at least first.

Hopefully he wants out after 2 years, gets itchy, don't want him running out the NCAA 4 year eligibility clock and becoming a free agent.. 'cause that would suck.

Savoie for his 6th goal in 5 games, and an Assist... 6G, 2A, 8 Pts after only his 5th game in the NCAA
Currently has a 35% shot percentage.. Bossy-like

Yeah I heard of Matthew Savoie way before Carter, Bob Stauffer used to hype the kid a lot and I think he got exceptional status to play in the WHL a year early. We will see how high he gets drafted in his year.

Matt Benning's younger brother is with Savoie in Denver as well, plays defense, he's tearing it up as well, as an 18 year old. He's a Florida pick, just ahead of Savoie!

Carter's kid brother Matt is pretty freaking good as well.. he's 16 playing for Winnipeg Ice WHL .. draft eligible in 2022.. he's a speedster

Yeah I heard of Matthew Savoie way before Carter, Bob Stauffer used to hype the kid a lot and I think he got exceptional status to play in the WHL a year early. We will see how high he gets drafted in his year.
Yeah, it was denied.

Matt Benning's younger brother is with Savoie in Denver as well, plays defense, he's tearing it up as well, as an 18 year old. He's a Florida pick, just ahead of Savoie!

Seen Michael Benning quite a bit with the Cru as well. He and Carter were dominant as 16 years olds. A bit of a Riverboat Gambler, but the offensive mindset is top shelf.

They might have been Sherwood Park's best chance at a AJ championship in three decades. Sadly, we'll never know.

Was looking forward the them flattening the godless Saints.

The annual playoff loss to SG hurts. It's a fun rivalry, but it's like the endless battle between a hammer and a thumb.

Benning's kid brother gets a weak call on a trip, PP Minni.. goal.. 1-0 Minni.

Denver get out played.. 1 shot in last 21 minutes.. total of 4 in the middle of 2nd..

Not looking like its going to be a happy ending to Savoie's college career...

Its funny, I played with Denver's #13's (Massimo Rizzo, 7th round Florida) dad in a beer league.. his dad was way too good for the league, he passed a lot :)

Denver totally outplayed .. Denver scores .. tied 1-1 !

Minni take a penalty.. Denver on the PP.. PP expires.. Benning scores! 2-1 Denver!!

Ha! Ya that game was weird.. in the 2nd period it looked like Denver couldn't do anything, looked slower, couldn't make a pass, and were the weaker team.. thought it was over.. then it was like someone hit a switch in the 3rd, Denver started dominating the play.. especially after they tied it 1-1.. Hockey is a funny game.. sometimes you get periods where the other team dominates and you just have to weather the storm until the tide turns the other way and your team goes on their roll.. sometimes the tides change shift to shift or period to period.. or game to game in a series.. just need to hang in there and be ready for your chance.

That entire Denver was being shut down, but there was a Savoie opportunity where he looked like he was going take the puck around the net, but made a quick cut to the crease and got away a great shot. Then next shifts he was like a water bug buzzing around.

After that, it looked the Denver D we’re activated and Minny folded. Fun game to watch. Savoie has some real offensive upside. I’m interested to see how he transitions to the pro game.

Maybe Savoie just needs another day to soak it in. No practice means no hockey related agendas.

I was wondering about his speed the most, specifically how it related to the rest of the NCAA players to get a sense of where he sits, and I have to say he's right up there speed-wise.. and room to get better.. I think he's left a little fitness on the table if you get what I mean :)
