Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
EDM claims Zykov
Lots of Cans fans are really mad at how Zykov has been handled. Put up good numbers in the AHL (33 goals in 63 games last year), had a good pre-season, but from game 1 of the regular season he barely got a shot, so they say (floating between 11 and 4 mins per game all season). Basically how many of us view Pulju under McLellan.
Worth a shot. Right handed LW with a good shot.

6 foot 1 225lbs. Skates well. Offensive player.
Rolling the dice on another pick up. Decent gamble, but why wasn’t he stickng in Carolina where they need offence?

Yeah, no idea. Just saw lots of Canes fans complaining about him never getting a fair shot this year, and judging by ice time, he really didn't if he did indeed have a good pre-season.
Highlights of him from last year
Looks like he scores the most right around the net.

He's signed for this year and next at an AAV of 675k and will be an RFA at the end of it. I like low risk moves.

....would guess Patrick Russell gets sent back to Bakersfield....Russell's cap hit is $700K, so the Oilers would come out of that with $25K more in salary cap space....

Seriously, I don’t know who the GM is right now.
2015/2016 - This Kool-Aid tastes like McDavid flavoured Drain-O.
2016/2017 - This Kool-Aid is starting to taste like juice.
2017/2018 - I'm drinking this Kool-Aid, in hopes that it's Drain-O.
2018/2019 - Another round of Drain-O, good sir!

It will all depend on his speed, if he's got wheels, he'll likely provide a better option than a few guys on this current roster because he looks like he has some finish.

I don't think he's very fast. I think you have to hope he is a Maroon type of guy for us. Having good timing when to go to the net and able to finish stuff off.

Looks like he has quick hands ... me likey ..
Here's one's scout comments from his draft year, was CHL rookie of teh year as a 17 year old, 40 goals...
Quote: | Scout’s take: “Zykov is a big, strong winger with great hands and a big shot,” says Ross MacLean, head scout for International Scouting Services. “He can be a very exciting player to watch and excels in high speed offensive situations. He has the hands to win space with moves but can also power his way to the middle and crash the net. He is a very dangerous shooter who can get the puck off quickly and seems to hit his spots more often than not. His defensive commitment and awareness needs to improve and he will need to get stronger to be able to play the style that has made him so successful at the next level.”
“He’s one of the few players that scored 40 goals this year, not only in the Quebec league, but in the CHL – he was kind of in a class all his own,” adds David Burstyn, director of scouting for McKeen’s Hockey. “Where Zykov really thrives is down low; he’s an absolute force on the puck. He’s very strong on his skates and he’s very strong on his stick. He can get his shot off almost in an instant. The one thing that can plague his game is he can sometimes play with tunnel vision and he doesn’t always see the pass. He’s a shoot-first type of player.”

Canes fan analysis:
Quote: | He lacks open ice skating generally, not very mobile laterally and it takes a little time to get up to speed.
That’s his real flaw. To me it was more the lack of mobility than speed. He doesn’t change direction very quickly, to be fair though he looked better this year like he had worked on it.
He’s very good playing the NHL cycle game. Very good hands, sees the play well and can make good plays in tight spaces. He’s a great finisher around the net. Redirects and rebounds, as well as a very good shot. Below the dots in the offensive zone he’s pretty solid. Everywhere else he’s a question mark. It’s borderline embarrassing we lost him on waivers depending on how he does with you guys obviously. Brind’Amour wouldn’t play him. We don’t understand why, he looked pretty legit last year and aside from a slow start when everyone else started hot he didn’t do anything wrong. He never got a second chance.

It really is starting to remind me of MacTavish’s reign of error when there was another move almost every week.
For what it’s worth, I like this gamble. Also, glad it happened now and not while McLellan was in charge. His record with Russian players is absolutely miserable.

Does remind you of the Puli situation in Edmonton. ( big guy, right handed shot ) How's his english? Oh right, we have a new coach. I see it as a low risk gamble and a good one at the price point. Watched the scoring video and really like how he doesn't hot dog like he just won the Stanley Cup after a goal and looks like he has a fast, accurate release. There's huge room for improvement on this team, especially the bottom 6 so it's a great opportunity for him and for the Oilers. Look forward to seeing him play here. Russel is too slow for the NHL.

LOL, yeah the judgement on the trade didn't take much time, bust.
It had to be more guys than just Chiarelli that OK'd that trade in their valuation of Spooner, like Kieth Gretzky, pro-scouts, to get it so wrong makes you worry Kieth Gretzky will be just as bad a GM once Chiarelli is toasted.

Kings traded him for Versteeg looking to get go on another run.
It appears he was down in the A for a conditioning stint, to be recalled he had to have been placed on and clear waivers, no? Wouldn't say they gave up on him if I'm correct on that and that they took the risk to get him back with the big club.

From a strictly numbers perspective, based on his AHL & NHL production, I'm not sure how much more you gain with him coming into the lineup than Ty Rattie coming out of the press box. Very similar boxcars.
That said, he's probably better than Patrick Russell at the least, and probably others in the bottom 6, and there is very little risk. I'm not opposed to it, and I'm hoping for good things, but I'm very much in the "wait and see" mindset before declaring it a big win.

My understanding is you don't have to clear for a conditioning stint. If he were to stay down there, he'd have to clear waivers (which is probably why he was on them for the Oilers to claim).
The new CBA doesn't have re-entry waivers, because they wanted to avoid the Wade Redden situation where he was buried forever and ever. You have to clear waivers to be assigned to the AHL, but once you clear, you can be recalled to the NHL without having to go on waivers again.

Players on conditioning stints are technically still on the 23-man roster, so no waivers, and he takes up a spot.

So glad we signed the lesser Vesey and lesser Larkin...it would have been a shame if we'd let one of those guys get away:
Nolan Vesey
AHL Condors - 4GP 0-1-1
ECHL Thunder - 11GP 1-1-2
Colin Larkin
AHL Condors - zilch
ECHL Thunder - 13GP 0-5-5

AHL-only contract. Still pretty good result for a camp walk-on. I'm sure his lineage didn't have anything to do with it.

I'm surprised that no one has brought up the fact that Zykov was the player picked by the Kings with the pick that MacT turned into five draft picks back in 2013. So, if he can become a regular, he'll surpass the total number of NHL games played by either side of that trade by the end of his contract. (Slepyshev = 102 games; Yakimov = 1 game)

I like the gamble. Took nothing to get him. A big, right shooting, winger who is good in the corners, protects the puck well, has a good shot and has some skill. Had 33 goals and 54 pts in 63 AHL games. If they could get a 3rd liner out of him, great.

Gregor, on Twitter, Zykov is cleated to play in Canada and will make his debut tomorrow.
ALSO says MRI to come for Drake’s hand, concern it may not be a short term thing.
Would instantly give Zykov a shot with RNH and JP.

Please do not feed the bears. Feeding the bears creates a dependent population unable to survive on their own. Bears.
