Ceci signs with the Oilers. 4 years. $3.25 mil per

That's pretty nuts for Ceci, isn't it?
Finally the Oilers get the guy that Chiarelli really wanted for Taylor Hall...

TSN reporting at 4 years. This seems like a lot for Ceci. I've never been a big can of his, but he is younger than I remember him being. Anyone know how he looked in Pittsburgh last year?

Last year was the best of his career. But largely driven by luck. High shooting % and high sav % when he was on the ice. After 7 years of being mediocre to poor before, I would not expect much. Pens fans saying he is a good bottom pair D and was worth the 1.25M he got last season.

Think so. Maybe worse skater, bigger body. Maybe could compare to Larsson when Larsson was at his worst here. Think his issue is just not being a good puck mover. Probably gonna be mastering that ring around the boards.

To be fair to Holland, he's been consistent with what he said in the media availability at the end of the season. He believed that winning teams have lots of gray hair. That's probably not really accurate - Tampa Bay Lightning really don't - Stamkos is 31 and was the third oldest on the team this year behind Maroon (32) and McElhinney (37) - but for some reason he's been pretty fixated on the 2002 Stanley Cup when the pre-salary cap Red Wings had Chelios (39), Larionov (40), Yzerman (36), Hull (37), Robitaille (35), Duchesne (36), Olausson (34) and Dominik Hasek (36).
Now, that was a different era, the team is pretty much an all-star team and was able to spend something like triple what the Oilers of the same year spent, but still - that's the team that most speaks to him. Moreso than the 1997 Cup, which only had Fetisov (38), Murphy (35) and Larionov (35) in that older group.
He's gone out and gotten a lot older fast. I think the fact that the team eschews analytics is shining through - the team looks somewhat better on forward, but that defence looks bad, and do they even have any money left to address goaltending? But it's definitely to Holland's design here. He's put his stamp on the team in a big way. I think it's sub-standard, and probably screws us for the rest of McDavid's time as an Oiler unfortunately. I hope I'm wrong.

You're not wrong. 3 years for Barrie and 4 for Ceci at those cap hits pretty much sewers this team. Those guys should be playing 3rd pair 5x5 minutes and some PP time for Barrie. God help this team if Bouchard doesn't have an all-star level season next year.
Oilers Goal Differential
17/18: 234 GF / 263 GA (-29)
18/19: 232 GF / 274 GA (-42)
19/20 (82 game pace): 257 GF / 254 GA (+3) in 64 games
2021 (82 game pace):269 GF / 235 GA (+34) after 38 games

Okay now.
Barrie was a SIGNIFICANTLY different player in Colorado and Edmonton than he was in Toronto. And Ceci has started to bloom later than expected. This tweet is a Leafs Homer looking for attention.

Pens fans saying Ceci's season started to crater half way through this last season. And he was brutal in the playoffs. But still decent 3rd pair guy for the 1.25M.
Think it could be like one of those super rare flowers that you wait 8 years to bloom and it does it in the middle of the night when you weren't looking and dies off.

This is the one today that has me really down. 1 decent year in Pittsburgh is likely the outlier, and locking into four-years with him is an anchor. This is buyout candidate.
Ceci is not better than Bear. He's not someone you lock in for four years, and he's not someone you solidify a shaky Top-4 with. He's not someone to elevate Duncan Keith, and Duncan Keith is not someone to elevate Cody Ceci. That pairing is likely to be a disaster.

It's very possible that analytics guys job is to try to dig in and find silver lining stats for Holland and gang to get to the masses. Like Chia telling us about how Russell was #2 in the league at defensive zone plays leading to an offensive zone entry.
Gotta be something out there for Ceci. Top 5 in poke checks/60 against left handed wingers.

Funny story about Ceci, I watched him in some international tourney, maybe the Worlds with the U-25 team, can't remember for sure, and I really liked his play. but I recognize that's a small sample size and the overall stats probably tell a more accurate story.

Maybe the same thing Chia saw to decide he may be worth Hall?
Didn't know he was drafted for offense. Scored almost PPG in the OHL his draft year (17-43-60 in 64 games and 15 points in 18 playoff games). But seemed to hit a wall and didn't improve. The year Chia was gonna get him was his best offensive season, 10 goals 16 assists in 75 games.
Guess file this under not sexy, but maybe there's some hidden offense there.

Boy if 38 year old Duncan Keith ends up being 3rd pair or worse, that defense is in huge trouble.
I really hope 1 or 2 of these things happens:
1) Remarkably, Klefbom comes back.
2) Bouchard is a beast and makes Ceci an overpaid 3rd pair D.

This whole offseason really depends on Keith being as good as he was. IF he plays like a younger version maybe the team looks alright come October. But oh man if he plays like a 38 year old are they ever in trouble.

Not a fan of this one. Bear > Ceci. I like the player they got for Bear, but I don't think the upgrade on the 3rd line outweighs the downgrade on defense. Our goalies should be seeing less rubber, not more. This could go badly. McDrai might need to score 5 a night.

So I think Jones/Bear is better than Keith/Ceci and even if you think that's closer than I do - the cap hit is over $6MM more for the latter pair. That's a lot of money that could have been spent on a 3C or a goalie or even a different, better LD if you wanted to replace Jones or Russell.
The defence looks worse to me than it did at the end of last season, and it costs significantly more, and is locked up until the end of time. Cody Ceci may be on the team longer than Connor McDavid now.
Oh yeah, and besides that extra $6MM, the Oilers also gave up a 3rd round pick, and tied up their 2nd round pick for next year. Perfect.
