As per Sportsnet:

Mike Green to Edmonton in exchange for

Kyle Brodziak
Conditional draft pick (4th round pick in 2020, turns into a 3rd round pick in 2021 if Edmonton makes Conference Finals, AND Green has played in a minimum of half the games)

Detroit retains 50% of the cap hit.

He had a modified NTC and he didn’t list us as a team to avoid. Wow we moving on up y’all.

Decent price on the rental depending on what the conditions are. I’m glad to be buyers not sellers.

Poor Brodziak...

Solid gamble. Dick Tarnstrom 2.0. Just need a Samsonov, Roloson (maybe already have him in Smith) and a Spacek.

So I'm guessing since there's so little cap space we can be underwhelmed my Ennis tomorrow?

Don't mind Green as a depth guy. He can still move the puck.

OKay - He's a 5.375MM cap hit. Call it 25% of the season left, so he's just a $1.343MM hit, so I suppose that's how he fits? Gotta hope that tomorrow sees Russell leave town in a deal that brings us a winger...

Green is a right shot though, so are we more likely to see Larsson or Benning go?

Don't totally get this. Wasn't Brodziak on LTIR the reason we could pick up ~1.6M of cap? Right now we only have 600k of space. Is someone about to be put on LTIR? Hope it's not Klef.

Read a few places that TO has interest in Larsson... I'd rather keep Benning, personally. I think hes been coming along nice, and isnt as cap heavy as Larsson.

Also, for whatever reason, he's never outscored when he's on the ice.

2016-17 +8
2017-18 +5
2018-19 +11 (1st on the team by a mile)
2019-20 +9 (2nd behind Yamamoto)

He's best when he's not given too much responsibility, but Benning does seem to keep the puck out of his net when he's on the ice.

His fancy stats have him as a top four. His defensive ability seems to be a strength this year, whereas in previous years he seems to have been living in the past, as being an offensive producer (but wasn’t anymore).

Seems like a good grab. Not a home run, but a double.

Mike Green? I'm still looking at that -32 in 48 games. That's an awful lot of time spent pulling the puck out of the back of your net. Yes, the team is miserably bad and sitting at a -110 goal differential, but even so...that's not good.

For what it's worth, Matheson's favourite target, Athanasiou is -45 in 46 games...That's not quite Bill Mikkelson bad (-82 in 59 games) but it's still pretty horrendous.

Doesn't have to be. The bonuses can carry over to next years cap. Which would suck of course.

Teams can go over the cap on bonuses - but it counts against next year's cap. So yes we can play with that space, but it could be costly to do so.

So we're now down to maybe $700K of cap space eaten up by that...a little more for a winger. Two wingers if we can get someone to take dead weight back...

Hmmm, our 600k of space only prorates to 1.66M worth of player. Green is 2.6875M. Still 1M short. What can come off to balance? Aside from LTIR.

Maybe I'm getting confused by the "current cap space" on capfriendly :)

I thought they used to have a deadline cap space field where you could relate it to the overall cap hit of players. I think this current cap space is just our cap space plus LTIR which no longer actually exists because Brodziak is traded.

If our current space is 632k like it says, I guess that would mean we can acquire ~4.1 times that, so ~2.6M. 50% Green fits in there almost perfectly I guess.

Ah, here is something useful on capfriendly:

https://www.capfriendly.com/players/mike-green

Accumulated Daily Cap Hit : $4,190,188
Remaining Daily Cap Hit : $1,184,812

So, Green has 1.184M left of cap hit. Divide 2 = 0.592M, which fits in our 0.632M of space.

Little disappointed here... considering Kovy went for a 3rd and would have been far more helpful.

Yeah, Green's stats aren't exactly what he used to put up - 3-8-11 in 48 games and a solid -32.

He can't be higher than your third pairing...and I'm not sure he's a great PP guy any more (although he'll undoubtedly look better with the Oilers PP than the Red Wings one...)

I do like that he has had 74 SOG. Considering that was on Detroit, makes me wonder if there is still a bit of gas left in that tank.

My suspicion, now that you have mentioned it... this relates more to Klef being out and our PP needing that quarterback type Dman. I think Green can still offer a bit in that department... I'm going to attribute his +/- to the awful team hes on, and just pray Hollands is making a good move here. He does have a boat load of playoff experience...

I have to figure this is to setup another deal. Green in itself makes no sense.

As per Crystal Zyla.

The Defence has outdone all expectations. Glad to see some help on the way, seems like this team’s luck could fold any time, this is a nice insurance/shore up trade.

I’ll miss Brodziak, says my inner MacT.

How does Mike Green help McD?

For the Oil, there is no such thing as “too many good D men”.

I agree with this 100%. A playoff teams needs to be able to go 9 deep on D. Right now I barely trust down to 5. I'm ok with this trade assuming Green can still play.

This is classic Ken Holland, shoring up the defense down the stretch. Former 2 or 3 time Norris nominee, mainly for his offensive ability back in the day. He could be a big plus on the pp especially with Klefbom being injured. Sounds like he still has good wheels, has a great shot from the point, and a player Holland knows well. Whatever his stats were in Detroit don't worry me. Because he's RH does that mean Benning will sit out at times? The Klef injury put some urgency into acquiring him, I'm sure. Hope it works out all around. Has to be a boost for the team.

So, I just have to accept I'll enver understand how LTIR works. Now the Oilers capfriendly site is actually showing a "current" cap hit that is a proper reflection of the overall cap of a player we can add to the roster :)

PROJECTED CAP SPACE : $313,515
CURRENT CAP SPACE : $1,422,288

313,515 turns into 1.422M because of how much of the season is left. 22% of season days remain. 314k/0.22 = 1.42M

I have no idea why before it said we have 632k of cap space, but only 1.66M of current space. 632k/0.22 = 2.872M. Something with LTIR totally messes up that calculation, and I give up understanding why :)

Anyways, no more LTIR to confuse. We can add 1.4M more worth of player (overall cap hit) now.

Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
Worth mentioning, Mike Green waived his modified no-trade clause to accept a trade to the Oilers.

5 years ago I would have been elated, now... not so much.

Right shot D so that's important.

I like this trade. His best days are behind but he's a vet who can move the puck and has offense. Great for depth. Thy gave up nothing to get him which is even better.

I remember Green as being a great skater.. but not sure how he compares today.. he knows what to do on a PP, so there is that, another vet that can pull minutes, not bad.
He was top 3 in minutes with Detroit, he was -32, but their other top D Hronek was also -32

Team goals for is 128.. GA is 239 .. hard to be a plus on that team with only 128 GF... which is worst in the league by a LONG shot.

I'm glass half full on this one..

Detroit might go down as one of he worst teams ever. Hard to have good stats on a team that bad. I look at it. The playoffs are brutal. Injuries happen. They could easily have to be playing a rookie in Bouchard or Manning real quick.

The Wings are so depleted even the Habs might be able to beat them now. I sure wish we played them one more time.

At least Athanasiou is playing tomorrow. Still - this is starting to get ridiculous. Someone order up the KFC to remove the voodoo curse!
