3 Cups

This is a 50-50 game for me. The Avs are missing Landeskog AND Rantanen plus they are down to their 3rd string goalie I believe so the Oilers should win. But the AVs are playing well, finding ways to win and it's a mystery as to which Oilers team will show up.

I haven't seen the lines yet but if it was me, I would go with these lines.

Leon - McDavid - Kassian
Nygard - Nuge - Neal
Khaira - Sheahan - Archibald
Granlund - Haas - Chiasson

Sit Gagner and Russell.

I think Nygard is a player. Every game he plays he gets better. His speed is a weapon, he has some edge and the guy makes plays. He made one hell of a set up to Russell last game. Plus it allows Neal on the right where he likes it.

I didn't think they should have sat Haas in the first place. He gets better each game and can skate. Gagner can't skate and he's a lousy center.

I put Granlund over Russell because both kill penalties and are good at it. Russell does try hard but I don't think he can score. The set up he had last game, wide open, 10 ft from the goal, goalie moving, not set, no one on him and all he can do is put it off the post. If you can't score from that set up, you will never score in my opinion. Granlund has been lousy but I have more confidence he might pot a goal than Russell.

Chasson and Archibald can interchange if needed.

Yup.
The Av's are a fast team and you can clock Gagner's lap time by the sun. He can't play center and his goal was a bit of lucky goal. Puts it off Jones's back and in. Plus I don't know what he was celebrating about. It was 6-2 and you put in the 6-3 goal with 8 mins left in the game, a game in which the whole team sucked. What's to celebrate.

Best Even Strength Corsi on the team as well. When he's on the ice, pucks are moving in the right direction.

I'd put Haas back in as well, but sit any of Khaira, Archibald, or Granlund. You don't need all of them in the lineup for the PK, but you do need a little offensive push in the bottom six. Gagner brings that. It was a heads up play on his goal, and despite not being fast, he's smart and plays intense.

The important thing is not to put Sheahan up with any of the scorers. They might bounce one in off him and then Granlund will win the Tobias Rieder trophy.

Injury Report:

OILERS - Adam Larsson (fractured right fibula) is on IR.

AVALANCHE - Mikko Rantanen (leg) is on IR; Colin Wilson (hand) is on IR; Gabriel Landeskog (lower body) is on IR; Philipp Grubauer (lower body) is on IR; Nikita Zadorov (fractured jaw) is on IR; Pierre-Edouard Bellemare (concussion) is day-to-day; Pavel Francouz (head) is day-to-day.

With all of Colorado's injuries you'd think the Oilers could come out with a win.

Oilers lines from Stauffer

Leon - McD- Kass
Neal - Nuge - Archibald
Nygard - Haas - Chiasson
Khaira - Sheahan - R.Russell

Nurse - Bear
Klef - Jones
Russell - Benning.

Smith starting.

He must be playing a hunch that Smith will play well. Gagner and Granlund, Persson sitting.

I would have played Nygard on the Nuge line but I do like Tippett put a speed guy up there.

The prediction contest is split 50-50 as of 1030 AM game day. I’m going with a statement Oiler win - a bounce back from that disappointing effort in San Jose and a good home performance against a team that thrives when the going gets tough but is hurting big time. For this one, I expect the Oilers to keep any and all Avalanche fourth liners off the scoresheet. Take advantage of all the AHL’ers- don’t make them look like All Stars.

Thats what happened Tuesday vs the Jets, but the grinches at the league are denying him the shutout because the Avs #2 (that we've also never heard of) played 31 seconds.

P. Russell: 2 points in 17 games
Granlund: 1 point in 16 games
Khaira: 1 point in 20 games
Archibald: 0 points in 11 games
Sheahan: 0 points in 15 games

Starting to see a bit of production from Chiasson, Gagner, Nygard, and Haas.

But not much happening from that half of the lineup. Can't say I quite understand the long leash they've been given or why guys like Benson and Yamamoto aren't getting a bit of look instead.

Because the Oilers are winning with the bottom 6 guys they have. Yamamoto is small and barely played last year and has 9 pts in 13 games. So not bad but not dominate. Benson is probably the closest.

The longer you can keep those guys down there, the better it is for them. I wouldn't call up Yamo at all. I could see Benson after Christmas.

I'd suggest the Oilers are winning *despite* the bottom six they have.

Exactly. So why would you call up say a Yamamoto who barely played last year and needs development time? Every game that Yamo spends in Bakersfield developing, getting stronger, getting used to being a pro, playing in all situations, playing big minutes benefits him and the Oilers long term. The Oilers have proven time and time again that playing guys before they are truly ready doesn't work. You don't have to look any farther than Bear. He spent just about 2 full seasons in Bakersfield and look at him now. I expect Jones to step in and it wouldn't surprise me if he stepped in and was good because he's spent over 2 seasons in the AHL and he's ready.

Tippet has seen enough of Chiasson, down to the 3rd line, gives Nuge a fighting chance with a guy with some wheels in Archibald.. too bad Archibald doesn't have any hands to go with the speed.
Nuge has been carrying a few boat anchors on that line this year.. at least he's getting some PP time.
