So a little off topic here but why if we do trade our 1rd pick i would like to see us get a couple of late picks on top of the return for it. If we can add a few more bullets the gun and go out and pick up a bunch of dmen late in the draft where is the harm in that.

That was a year ago.

How are those late picks doing, anyway? I haven't bothered tracking it because I assumed the Fab 5 Bonus Bullets would all be total busts because MacTavish.

If you're talking Caleb Jones and Ethan Bear, they were both solid picks, and had great years in the W this season. Ethan is still in the playoffs with Seattle.

Ethan was # 5 in scoring for D-men (19-46-65), and Jones was #11 (10-45-55)

Nope, Bear and Jones are Chiarelli picks.

The five picks the Oilers got for #37 a couple years ago are now Platzer, Slepyshev, Yakimov, Houck and Muir. Could turn out okay, could just be five misses for the price on one.

Amazing they actually can do something right. Win the draft lottery!!!

I didn't watch it this year and when I was told by a friend, while I was out, I think the smile stayed on my face for a good ten minutes.

Now more then ever it's time for Lowe and MacT to go. This pick is a huge win. Time to get this team on the right track, well past time and as we know they're not capable of it.

Huge win today and now bring some guys in to use all these young great players and maybe a superstar the right way. Build around them and the team the right way.

Katz and Lowe may not be able to build a winning hockey team, but they can certainly win the lottery. I wasn't believing that we'd won even though I could see the news, solely on the basis that this Oilers club just don't win anything...

It's hilarious reading the HF boards, in part because of all the Oiler fans who've come crawling out of the woodwork to celebrate as if the team had won the Cup. This was coupled with the amount of pure vitriol that fans of other teams (particularly Laffs fans) expressed following the announcement.

The real irony here is that the Oil actually benefited from a change to the lottery system that THEY prompted the league to create. I have to to agree with those whose only response was:

rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl

I dont know why theres so much backlash? For one the Oilers didnt lay down like Arizona and Buffalo did for the last half of the season. Buffalos fans were cheering on the other team to win for friggs sakes! Arizona traded everyone who could score and defend goals, Edmonton tried to claw its way back to respectability even beating some good teams in the home stretch of the season. This lottery win is just pure dumb luck, McDavid is coming to a city with a new barn rabid fans and an owner who can pay him anything. McDavid is going to be a god in Edmonton.

The main reasons for the hatred based on most of the comments I've seen is the following:

- The nimrod assheads who've run the Oil team into the ground have just been rewarded for their incompetence. I can agree with this assessment fully, as it's true. This is basically like seeing a drooling idiot win the Lotto 6/49 before they announce that they're going to spend it all on beer and hot dogs.

- The Oil have now won the 1st overall pick 4 times in the past 6 years, and everyone else in the NHL is sick of seeing it. I am actually not in full agreement with this complaint. Sure, the Oil have gotten those picks, but that's what happens when you're the NHL equivalent of a bottom-feeding algae-eater. A team sucks, they get the top picks in order to get better. The NHL changed the rules to cut down on the number of times any one team could be rewarded for being crap, but the Oil got very, VERY lucky this time. I'd bet the farm that if this year's draft didn't have anyone nearly as hyped as McDavid, we wouldn't have seen even close to the amount of hatred that's been expressed so far.

P.S.: The scary thing is that if McJesus turns out to be everything that he's made out to be, the MacT quote I put into my sig will be 100% right.

Get rid of Kevin Lowe!!!!! He isn't going to screw this up by demanding something stupid from McDavid in three years. His management of top players in the past should be one of the dynamics Daryl Katz needs to realize before he makes McDavid turn sour on the organization if he comes in and scores 100+ points in his first three seasons and Lowe wants to take him to arbitration. We will also need some beef in the top six, might be time to revisit a possible trade with Boston and try and pry Lucic and possibly Hamilton for Hall.

I feel like this thread, which is hilarious, is when Oilfans became a self-aware collective and made a wild heel turn. Riveting stuff. I hope the rest of the league has a sour taste in their mouth from this still.

Why did they move the draft lottery so late this year? First Saturday of the second round? I know they moved it to the first Saturday of the playoffs for the McDavid lottery. Why so late now?

I think it's because no one cares once the Oilers have graduated out of it...

(in all seriousness, having five less Canadian teams in it this year probably does play a role).
