Just wanted to make this so I could chuckle at how the Lames leadership has eroded to the point Mikael Backlund is their new Captain.

If Sabres are smart they will change the captain to some useless player and demand 3 1st round picks for him, since it means automatic cup.

Seems like the logical guy to pick given what they say he's been doing for years. They probably should have made him the captain a few years ago once Gio left. I will be watching them just to see what they do with all their UFA's. They are getting older by the day.

Smith had a really good rookie season. Wonder if he's got some personal stuff holding him back. Imagine some low end team will take a chance on him, he's dirt cheap. Gotta be something going on if he can't even stick as a league min player.

Staios just announced as new Ottawa POHO..
https://ottawasun.com/sports/hockey/nhl/ottawa-senators/sena tors-name-staios-president-of-hockey-operations
So.. where is the Oiler's 3rd round pick ? I thought that was a thing..

Likely "tampering" as well.. Ottawa and Staios must have been talking about this for a while now..

Campbell looked pretty good from what I saw against what the fLames announcers said was their “A-“ team ( as opposed to the Oilers “B or C”

It's like Sunny Milano a little while back. Kinda wish you could pry and know what's going on with these guys for them to go from useful to seemingly avoided like the plague by teams, but I guess it's not really any of our business.

I don't understand why the NHL waits until October 10th to start the season then tries to shoehorn a freaking triple header in on a Tuesday night.

Love the pressure that everyone piles on the next great young player. Every Bedard rush is hyped up in social media.

Kid needs to finish something though. Kind of a bummer when you watch a highlight everyone is hyping up and it's just him making some AHL Dman look bad and then a muffin on the net.

Good thing it was preseason. Looks like he would be angry if that was his first actual goal.

It's alright, Taylor Hall is there to show him how to fail. He can just do the opposite.

Mark Jankowski is an interesting name on there too if we actually had room to consider picking up someone.

Yeah he's bounced around a fair bit.. can't seem to stick.. he's 29 already

Cal Foote is only 24.. $800k cap hit.. I think he gets claimed before Oilers even get a chance.

The Oilers could use a right handed 4th line center as I don't think Ryan is the answer long term so if Jankowski was right handed, maybe they would look at him but I don't see much of a fit.

The NHL is doing something called a frozen frenzy tonight. All 32 teams are playing in 16 games that all start at different times. When I asked for the NHL to look at their scheduling and really think things through a monkey paw twisted somewhere. I actually don't mind having the start times expand from 4 pm to 9 (MDT), but this is so gimmicky. Kind of oddly aggressive too. I'm surprised the NHL and ESPN pulling this stunt on NBA opening night.

I wonder why they did it on a Tuesday as opposed to a Saturday when it could be a bit more spaced out through the day?

No 'automatic' 1 game suspension for Tkachuk.

For an automatic rule it sure seems to get rescinded a lot. In fact I can only think of one time on the last few years where it was automatic!

Hopefully Pinto did well on his bets. No contract so far, now suspended for 41 games. That's a lot of missed salary.

Anyone heard any rumours about what he actually bet on?
I can only find that 'The NHL found no evidence that Shane Pinto placed bets on the outcome of NHL games". So what else deserves a 41 game suspension that Pinto is 'remorseful about his actions' and the NHLPA hasn't fought this at all...

Friedman said it’s likely something called proxy betting.

I still don’t really understand it but he could have had a betting account in his name and had friends making wagers in his American account while he was playing in Canada. Or his friends could have been placing bets on hockey for him which would be a big no no.

I don't know the rules with the NHL but by the sounds of it, I assume he bet on something hockey related. I can't imagine the NHL would get bent out of shape if he decided to bet on a baseball game.

Blows me away how DUMB some of these players are. Just don't do it. The amount of money he will probably lose in lost salary compared to what he may have won has to be way different.

Probably does mean he was funding the betting being executed by someone else. Clearly Pinto has been watching too many NHL games. Got caught up with the 50 gambling commercials every game and couldn't help but try to find a way to partake.

Meanwhile in San Jose, holy crap are the sharks bad. Has a team ever given up ten goals in consecutive games at home? I’m sure I’ll find that answer on x shortly. I’m starting to worry Mike Grier isn’t the answer there.

Meanwhile in San Jose, holy crap are the sharks bad. Has a team ever given up ten goals in consecutive games at home? I’m sure I’ll find that answer on x shortly. I’m starting to worry Mike Grier isn’t the answer there.

We play them Nov 9, Thurs. Nothing says Oilers more than giving a hopeless, winless team the exact winning boost they need! ... and being us being the laughing stock for losing to the bottom of the barrel.

It could be an amazing game. I’m sad the Oilers and Sharks both play other teams before they meet this week.

The internet is at its most useful when obscure and pointless historical factoids come up. Teams have given up 10 in back to back three times previously.

2024 San Jose
1966 Boston
1944 Boston
1920 Quebec

None of those team went back to back at home, so the Sharks did do something special. Quebec however game up 10 three times in a row including 16 to the Habs. Check out their GAs at the end of the season.

Just an incredible observation from a guy on Twitter:

Quote:

Captain Jack
@oilersjack

Incredible stat:

The last place San Jose Sharks have been out scored 54-11 including the first back to back 10 goal games in 50+ years,

Sharks goalies have a save percentage of 86.9% this year

Edmonton Oilers goalies still have a worse save percentage at 86.4%

I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume the Sharks are just tanking on purpose lol.

Only 46M of commitments on their next year roster too. Might be doing it 2 years in a row.

Just hope the Oilers don't take them lightly when they play next week.

Everyone looking so fondly at the Tocchet effect right now. He made every Canucks player into a godly sniper and every goalie into Hasek. With almost all the same players that missed the playoffs last year.

We need that, so badly. Who is the closest clone of Tocchet out there?

Tocchet demands a certain level of detail and effort from the team and he holds his team accountable. Case in point against Nashville, his current highest paid player, one of his best players and an assistant captain J.T Miller wasn't playing undisciplined, after taking his 3rd penalty, he benched him. Not for a game or a whole period but for 4 mins.

“I felt he needed to sit with accountability and he responds with a goal. He’s fine. He came up and apologized to me and I apologized to him. I love the kid. I have no problems with J.T. Miller.

He set a standard for the team, one of his leader wasn't meeting that standard. I would bet the rest of the team took notice that one of their best players isn't above the rules. Miller responded with a goal right after. Also has 2 goals, 5 pts and 2 pims in the 3 games since.

But what do I know. I am less knowledgeable thinking a coach needs to set standards for his team and how they should play and when the players don't meet that standard, there are consequences other than a slap on the back. Having Demko helps them but they are also playing very hard which includes all their best players. The are only 9-2-1 so all that accountability crap I was preaching is probably overrated and obsolete.

You're so passive aggressive it hurts.

What you're preaching is obsolete. Thinking the solution is guys need to try harder, show they care, or not make dumb plays makes you a dinosaur. Coaches and managers do need to set a standard and create a culture of accountability. That's not what the argument is. The question is how to be do it. My perspective is treating adults like a 4 year old and sending them to a corner to think about what they've done doesn't actually modify behavior or improve results. I would suggest JT Miller scoring a goal was not a direct result of him being benched for 4 minutes. I have no problem with a guy missing a shift, but I with a few caveats: it needs to used as a training opportunity, there needs to be someone from a lesser role having earned the opportunity for the promotion, and it can't harm the team. Personally, I would never admit that I benched a player either. When someone with the mentality of you or Spector asked why I benched JT Miller I'd flat out lie and say he got dinged up and need 4 minutes of rest so we used it as an opportunity to get him some in-game coaching while giving Di Giuseppe (or whoever) some top line time because the pizza man has been doing some really good things and earned the opportunity.

tl;dr: If the coach isn't using the benching as an opportunity to improve the team, it's a passive aggressive emotional response that will fail in the long run.

I would also suggest that Tochett benching Miller for a shift and Huska benching Huberdeau last night only proves you can bench a top player, not that you should.

Huberdeau is making 10.5M, has 6 points and is -12 and slacked off almost the entirety of last season. I suppose benching him makes sense. I would expect people would compare this to a young D on our team making 1/3 as much, leading out team in ice time lately that is one of the top D scorers in the NHL.

Huberdeau is closer to the Campbell zone than the Bouchard zone, imo. He might just not have it anymore.
