Adam wrote on Fri, 30 June 2023 11:19 | Wheeler and Duchene also getting buy-outs. Interesting.
Ugly buyout for Wheeler - Winnipeg now gets two years of cap hit instead of one, and he can go sign cheap somewhere that's not Winnipeg so Wheeler is the big winner here.
Duchene is a little surprising to me. Pretty decent year last year.
Maybe they both want to come here cheap?
|
The rumor is Wheeler to Dallas.....as for Duchene, not really sure what will happen to him.
-Update on Wheeler....he prefers being in the eastern conference for shorter travel times, etc

I don't get this either. It feels like it's bad juju. I liked Bear and I hope he can rebound. Same for Puljujarvi. It is not like these guys were bad people or linked to sex scandals. There are reasons to not like players, but to be happy you might be right because people have differing opinions is petty.

Not sure where I said anything about his injury or saying I am happy he is hurt. I was told many, many times how wrong I was about my assessment that he was a 3rd pairing guy. That is what my comment is about. If he was as good as I was told he was, injured or not, the team that had him would qualify him to keep his rights so when he is healthy, he could play for their team.

Sorry, there's just no evidence that the Canucks didn't qualify him because they think he's terrible. I just posted 4 different articles offering analysis that the opposite is true. Not to mention the fact that the Canucks consistently played him with their best defenceman. The injury, and the Canucks cap situation definitely played into this decision.

If the Canucks dumped him due to injury, that is on them. I don't work for the Canucks so it's got nothing to do with my comment. So I wasn't "gloating" because he got hurt.

Such a weird flex to see guy's careers getting derailed by injuries and gloating about it.
ETA: by all accounts, Bear played well with the Canucks and played over half of his 5x5 minutes with Quinn Hughes, meaning that someone on the Canucks staff thought that he was doing something right (although, to be fair, the Canucks may make roster decisions based purely on spreadsheets, I'm not sure).
Quote: | Bear was Quinn Hughes’ most consistent defence partner and is almost certainly in line for a pay increase from his current $2.2 million cap hit. That being said, are the two sides going to be able to agree on a multi-year contract when Bear is going to be coming off of offseason shoulder surgery?
|
[ https://canucksarmy.com/news/report-vancouver-canucks-defenc eman-ethan-bear-will-undergo-shoulder-surgery[/url]
Quote: | Whether Bear’s agent Jason Davidson would be able to wrangle any kind of raise over and above this basic price isn’t clear, though before his injury Bear probably had a case for a two-year deal...Bear wasn’t always Quinn Hughes’ partner this past season but he did play there often and stood a good chance of opening next season as his partner, had he been healthy.
|
https://theprovince.com/sports/hockey/nhl/vancouver-canucks/ ethan-bear-surgery-leaves-canucks-in-a-roster-buildling-pick le
Quote: | The Canucks have kept mum on Bear’s injury situation, but at the end of the season a letter to team season-ticket holders from president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford listed him as a player set to play a key role next season.
The Canucks added Bear to the roster in a late October trade, acquiring him from the Carolina Hurricanes. He was without a role in Carolina but quickly found a regular spot in Vancouver, often playing with Quinn Hughes.
|
https://theprovince.com/sports/hockey/nhl/vancouver-canucks/ canucks-ethan-bear-to-have-shoulder-surgery-agent-confirms
Quote: | Ethan Bear isn’t a perfect defenceman, but the things he does well, he does really well.
There’s his defensive record for a start. On a team that struggled to control play in its own end, when Bear was on the ice, that wasn’t a problem.
Indeed, Bear’s 50.4 shot attempts against per 60 minutes of even-strength ice time was the 23rd-lowest in the entire NHL.
Bear’s defensive influence was unmistakable.
And then there was his work retaining pucks, which was outstanding...
So where will he fit in? Will he be Quinn Hughes’ partner? He’s probably best suited to playing further down the lineup, but he’s been a capable partner for the Canucks’ No. 1 defenceman.

That's honestly more than I thought he'd get.
Some bargains today - Duchene in Dallas, JVR in Boston, and some huge overpayments. Not sure how Alex Killorn can cover the bet at $6.25/year...Zucker seems way overpaid in Arizona too.

Wheeler at $800k seems like a steal. I know he is old, but he is coming off a season with over 50 points. Rangers got Quick as the back up as well. Too bad as I was hoping he would stay west.

Also Justin Holl for 3 years at $3.4MM per.
I actually like the bets on Sprong and Gostisbehere, but Yzerman was a man in a hurry to spend his money this week and he made a bunch of weird overpays. Hill is a 31-year old depth defenceman. He couldn’t have had a lot of bids in that range, and if you miss him because someone is willing to spend that on him you just go down the list.

Looks like some impatience hitting in Detroit. Think they were hitting ~90% capacity, and maybe getting some ugly results with renewals.
Chicago ~75% only original 6 team worse. Man, they really needed something to excite that fan base again!

At his size and how he has to play in order to score, I think he will struggle with injuries over his career. He has to get in tight to the goal and go into corners because he doesn't have an elite shot or skill and at his size, he's going to take a lot of contact.

Reports say Muzzin will be on LTIR fairly long term.
if that's the case, they have pretty much a complete roster with $600,000 left. Samsonov hasn't signed but Pizza boy will probably find a way to get rid of the last season of Murray to cover that.

Yeah with Domi now signed at 1 x 3M they are $8.8M over the cap.. looks like Muzzin retires, and Murray gets traded out with a 1st and a prospect? Cap is expensive these days, tough to dump that contract..

Stuff like this is why I would make a terrible GM. Former top picks get me excited.
Maybe use those "future considerations" from the Kostin/Yamo deal and get Stevie to retain half and get this guy for a couple of years at $913k? I remember him being a stud with the Mooseheads and the predraft hype around him a few years ago. 23 years old, decent size, decent wheels. Might be worth a shot.
Seems like a great candidate for one of those fabled change of scenery breakouts.

A bit strange what the Leafs did. Scoring is great but they have been losing mostly due to goaltending and bad defense. Right now their defense isn't very good and goaltending wise they have Murray who I think is hurt and Woll. But they went out and signed Bertuzzi and Domi who I don't think defense is their strong suit and they are forwards. Bertuzzi gets a bonus deal but Domi is straight up 3 mill. I don't think Klingberg is known for great defense either.

If not mistaken I think he's UFA now.. so you could get him for nothing more than what he wants for a salary.
Be interesting where he ends up.. definitely reclamation project.
As you said he had a a great season in Halifax.. he was a consensus #3 ranked pick over most draft list outlets.. Button had him at #3.. McKenzie at #4 (consensus of the NHL GM's he talked to)
There are more RFA's that haven't received QO's so might be some more talent put on UFA.
UPDATE: Cleared Waivers.

So just an attempt to give him away, but he's posting 4th line numbers at 3rd line dollars, so there's no long line of suitors waiting. Yzerman will have to retain salary if he wants to give him away it appears.

So just an attempt to give him away, but he's posting 4th line numbers at 3rd line dollars, so there's no long line of suitors waiting. Yzerman will have to retain salary if he wants to give him away it appears.

Who drafted that bum? :)

He may be UFA yet:
https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article/red-wings-expected-to-p ut-filip-zadina-on-waivers-to-terminate-his-contract/
Apparently the Red Wings have told him he's likely in the AHL with them, and he's said he won't go to the AHL, so they're talking about ending the contract a year early, letting him then free to re-sign with another team.
That's a lot of money to leave on the sidelines. Very likely he's losing at least half a million dollars for this decision - possibly up to $1.1MM if he's on a league minimum deal.

Babcock back in the NHL with the Blue Jackets. That team sure does love hardass coaches who the players are likely to hate, eh? Safe to say that Kekelainen has a type.

Tortorella is the only coach that was able to help them have any success so I can understand. He might have been a contributing factor for star players leaving, however I think it was unlikely that Panarin or Bobrovsky were going to stay anyway. Gaudreau and Laine are locked in for a while, so they can't bolt to free agency if they don't like Babcock. I think the most likely scenario is that Babcock gets 2 seasons , and if the team has not seen significant improvement then he will be shown the door.

It's pretty funny Gaudreau when from Sutter to Babcock with only one uninspiring year in between.

Hall being dumped 2 times to make room for Looch is remarkable.
