Colorado, Vancouver and Edmonton have their chance to close out their series next. Boston failed, now who next. This is fun.

looks like the Jets are folding. Got their tie 3-3 in the 3rd, and brains turned off.

Avs had a very good trade deadline...took it easy towards end of regular season...and now might be deadlier than the team they had in 21-22

Seriously Soros? Bad angle shot from Zadorov goes right through you.

Nashville forwards are all panicky hot potato tossers. Would have been wonderful to play them in round 2. But looks like they suck way too much.

Nice. Zadorov smoked a guy into his goalie to help Nashville score now.

Jets are the first team in NHL history to allow 5+ goals in each of their first 5 games to begin a postseason

I was shocked to re-learn that Sean Monahan was on the Jets, and was actually playing this whole series. He needs to get back with his soul mate Johnny Hockey in Columbus.

Dan Rosen @drosennhl
Peter Laviolette and Rod Brind'Amour, a juicy coaching matchup in the 2nd round.

Laviolette was the coach and Brind'Amour the captain of the Carolina's 2006 Cup-winning team.

Not since 1947 has a series featured 2 opposing coaches who won a Cup together like that.

Wow, Nashville D to the rescue. And survived playing 5 minutes of ultra passive scared defense, just praying for Canucks players to mess up passes, which they thankfully did.

Canucks still generate so little until Nashville starts playing like scared little children. Would be nice if Nashville could get to game 7.

Hope they beat the snot out of each other.

Should the Preds manage the upset, and IF the Oilers can get by the Kings - how many points would Leon put up in that series? He's got 22G-12A-34Pts in his last 13 against them.

I am pretty shocked by the Jets exit.

They had the Avs number all season. Best defensive team in the NHL. Potentially the vezina winning goalie. The Avs goalie wasn't strong all year. 3.02 and .897.

Then what happens. Jets gave up 5 or more goals per game and Hellebuyck was outplayed by Georgiev. What's even more odd to me is it's not like Georgiev had the series of his like. He's 3.03 and .900 in the playoffs. So almost exactly what he posted during the season.

I picked the Jets to win. I knew the Avs could score but they like to play run and gun and their goaltending wasn't that good. So if a team just plays them hard with some level of structure and you have a previous vezina winner and maybe the next winner, you should have a big edge.

Playoffs are a whole new season, what you did in the regular season means practically jack squat. I assume you would put money on the Canucks steamrolling the Oilers in round 2 (should they meet) based on Vancouver having Edmonton's number all season?

Are you asking me a serious question? I am an Oilers fan, I would of course bet on the Oilers.

And yes, I understand playoffs are different but the Jets allowed 199 goals in 82 games. That's 2.42 goals per game in the regular season. They allowed 5.6 per game in the playoffs. That's over double. Hellebuyck during the regular season was 2.39 and .921. Playoffs he was 5.23 and .870. So over double the goals against and 51 points worse %. That's ridiculous and a complete collaspe.

Good thought but I really hate the Canucks.

It's a toss up as to who I take more pleasure in when they lose. Leafs or Canucks. Probably the Leafs by a hair but I really don't like the Canucks.

I was in Vegas in 2006 and did that for game 6 against the Sharks. Put like $20 on the Sharks. Had never been so happy to rip up a losing ticket.

And the Avs scored 304 goals in 82 games, top of the league in that metric. It's not wholly surprising that they outscored the Jets in the manner they did.

Avs clearly have another level of play that the Jets didn't come close to matching. Avs attack was relentless all series. Lots of really nice goals, and nice plays that made the Jets D look inept.

Still really surprised that the Jets had the regular season they had with that lineup. Seems like a big year of overachieving for that group, but they already peaked.

Probably one of the worst first round matchups you could get in the West too. Don't envy the Jets. That could have gone similar for us if we had that 1st round matchup. Avs had 1 hiccup in net in game 1, and cracked down defensively more to make it not matter much how Georgiev plays, and just dominated every aspect pretty consistently.

Jets were and are a streaky team. In the past two years they’ve been either dominate or crap. No in between. As good as Colorado is, I believe they caught Winnipeg on a stinker streak.

Avalanche need to be taken seriously, but they do not scare me like they have in years past. Everyone with a series lead or Dal/Vegas are worthy and capable to come out of the West.

Seems one thing they rode all year was the sav%, which flipped from best to worst at the worst time. LB was even better than Helly in his appearances (against weaker comp of course).

#2 all situation PDO right behind our favorite Canucks. Canucks with the wild shooting %, Jets with sav %.

I didn't think they wouldn't be a playoff team, but still am surprised where they finished. But super consistent great goaltending all season long can do wonders I suppose.

Lots of fans were pissed the Oilers didn't trade for Toffoli. I thought he looked really slow and couldn't keep up.
As good as Monahan was in the regular season for them, he was a nonfactor in the playoffs and also looked way too slow.

Those were their main 2 deadline additions and both didn't do much for them in my opinion.

Not sure if a winger could as for 2 worse top 6 linemates for playoffs than Ehlers and Monahan lol. Toffoli had his work cut out for him but managed a couple goals with those invisible bums.

Definitely not a guy you add though unless you have cap space to spare, which we had zero of.

Did they just start a game a 4PM local in Vegas? NHL is nuts with their scheduling. Some nights you just can't have a double header.

EDIT: Nevermind, just a replay marked as NEW by the TV box.

Peter Angelo is too good to take a routine hit. Had to give Seguin a backhand slap for daring to touch Prince Pietro.

Vegas is down 3-2 off a PPG from Peter Angelo being an entitled b&@ch. Hope it holds.

We probably match up worse against Dallas, but screw it. Down with these entitled cheating beeches.

Whoever comes out of that series isn't beating Colorado anyway, so go Stars!

Not many easy outs. If we do manage to get to the 3rd round, a series against any of the Avs, Stars, or Knights is a coin toss. Avs have the deadlier weapons, Stars have a goalie that has gone supernova at times, Knights...well screw them.

I think we can beat any of them, but guarantee there are no walks in the park

Flying across the ice with your stick held over your head to hack the wrist of the best player in the league in garbage time is fine as long as you have a good reason like "they hit me first". Oh and you play for Vegas.

I wonder who will win the Choke Bowl tomorrow night.

The team that can't close out elimination games, or the team that can't win a game 7?
Leafs sure seem to be doing OK without Auston "greatest goal scorer in the history of the entire world" Matthews.

Either way, both teams are looking pretty bad and I can't see either of them winning more than maybe one game against Florida.

Was surprised to find myself cheering for the Leafs last night. Maybe I was just wanting a game tomorrow night.

I agree with you - Don't think it much matters. I think Florida stomps either of these teams.

Have a feeling Stars and Vegas are going 7, so it’ll be a sizeable break here for the Oily boiz regardless of Friday’s outcome in Smashville.

Can Stamkos be our cap manager?

Quote:

Stamkos on considering accepting a lower salary to stay here: "I think that has been a part of everyone's thought process in the core group of guys that we have had here in terms of what guys have taken over the years to stay here. I understand the tax advantage and that type of thing. Kuch is making $9.5. That is probably grossly underpaid in terms of what guys are getting now. Vasy. Pointer with 40 or 50 goals every year. You look at Matthews. What did he sign for? $13.5 or something? Heddy is making under $8 million. That is grossly underpaid if you look at what he has done. That is what everyone has done here and that is why we have had the success and that is the way it has been for this organization. I think that that in itself is a testament to management in how they want to build a team and, first and foremost, the players for wanting to do that and accept that and allow the management to go out there and build a roster to compete for the Stanley Cup. I think that's just always been the way it's been here"

I think it isn't a question of staying to "win" for Stamkos. They will be competitive, anything is possible but I see their window closing. But what does he want for his life? He's made almost $100 mill in NHL salary, based on the tax situation in Florida, he's taken home I am sure a big time chunk of it. He's spend his entire 16 yr career in Tampa. That's his home, that's where he's raised his family. He's won a couple of cups. He will be 35 in Feb. He scored 41 goals this year. His production might start to tail off some but he's probably got a couple good seasons left in him. Does he seriously want to pack up his family to chase money?

Would some team give him a raise on his 8.5? Most likely. He's a name, has cups, scored 41 goals. But really, how much money is enough?

What impresses me about his answer is it isn’t about him, how much money he has made, or his next contract at all really. It’s about how everyone has taken discounts, and should continue to take discounts, and even goes so far to praise management for making that happen so they could win some cups. That’s a leader who gets the message, but importantly a management who knows which message to send.

Good point but I do think, and this is only my opinion, it's also him saying that in a way to justify to maybe not his team but others in the union. The union wants all the players to max out because it drives up everyone elses salary.

I have no doubt in my mind there is a low end team with cap space who would offer him a raise. As an example. Utah. Brand new team, owner with money burning a hole in his pocket. No offense to the former Yotes players but not one of them is a name. Keller is a good player but ask a non hockey hardcore person and I bet you'd fine people who don't know he exists. Ask any person who remotely follows hockey and I bet they have heard of Stamkos. Won some cups, gold medal. Probably future hall of famer. He just scored 40 goals. If they gave Stamkos 9-10 mill for 3+ yrs to come to Utah, their fan base won't care he will be 35 and how that contract ages. They will think "We got Stamkos!!"

But if he doesn't want to move the family, he's going to have to take a pay cut. I bet in the 6 mill range, maybe less. Pretending the Oilers had the cap space and the want, and he wanted to come to Edmonton, I would not want the Oilers to give him anymore than what Hyman makes due to the age.
