Hurricanes sign Aho to an 8-year/$78M deal. Deal starts in 24/25. 26 years old, probably one of the more underrated players in the league. Since he joined in the 16/17 season he's 10th in goals in the league.

https://www.nhl.com/news/sebastian-aho-signs-eight-year-cont ract-with-carolina-hurricanes/c-345441394

Picked two slots after the second pick dealt for Griffin Reinhart. Imagine if the Oilers had just drafted Barzal and Aho instead...(or Chabot or Connor or...)

The list is long. Eriksson-Ek was rumoured to be picked. I would have taken him in a heartbeat too.

I think the Oilers chose to float the Eriksson-Ek rumour in order to try to quell the furor over what was so clearly a bad decision so soon after it was made. Still one of the dumbest Oilers leaks because A) Eriksson-Ek would still be a lot better than Reinhart, B) it just would mean that the Oilers were committed to making a mistake no matter what, since they'd have had to pass up all of Barzal, Connor and Chabot to pick him.

Even that backfires in the end. Eriksson Ek ended up being a very solid 2-way forward that we would absolutely love to have here with McDavid or Drai, and he'd be cost effective (this point of course assumes competent management).

See, Chiarelli was really just saving us from ourselves. He feared we'd eventually overpay Eriksson Ek (or Barzal, Chabot, Connor, etc.) and so instead got someone there was no fear of us overpaying! WIN!

I still maintain that it was one of the worst trades in franchise history. In one of the most heralded draft classes ever not even counting McDavid, they gave up a mid first (16) with a consensus top 10 talent still on the board right there for the taking, and an early 2nd (33) for a guy who couldn't even crack the Islanders lineup.

And man - every time I look at that draft and see those 3 consecutive picks by the Bruins - Zboril, DeBrusk, and Senyshyn and then you look at the next 3: Barzal, Connor, Chabot...ouff

Panicky Pete was panicking right out of the gate.

My thoughts for that trade was that he had better be right the Reinhart is an NHLer. All downhill from there for Chia showing how right he can be.

I went to that draft and I cheered loudly when they announced "we have a trade to announce" ... followed by sheer confusion. Kept asking people who had data around me what was added besides Reinhart?

Appears as if 5 suspensions are coming......which I don't think is a strong enough punishment personally

https://www.hockeyfeed.com/nhl-news/team-canada-5-players-wi ll-face-nhl-suspensions-for-involvement-in-the-2018-sexual-a ssault-scandal

I also wonder how sponsors will react....as of now, the NHL needs that extra revenue moreso than 5 replaceable players...

It also doesn't say how long of suspensions there could be by the NHL. Could be a season, could be indefinite if the league thinks the backlash is too great.
Teams may also choose to suspend internally or sever ties depending on this outcome as well. I'm sure there's some kind of morality clause in their contracts to protect the brand of the team and league.

With a year left on his current contract, Tom Wilson just signed a 7 year, 45.5M extension. Even with a growing cap, this won’t age well for the team and the 29 year old forward.

Wowza!

That's an insane contract. Makes the Hyman/Kane contracts look a lot better, but probably hurts if Connor Brown is remotely successful this year.

Oilers Goal Differential
17/18: 234 GF / 263 GA (-29)
18/19: 232 GF / 274 GA (-42)
19/20 (82 game pace): 257 GF / 254 GA (+3) in 64 games
2021 (82 game pace):269 GF / 235 GA (+34) after 38 games

I think that's possibly the worst contract signed this year. Wilson's body has been breaking down. He misssed a huge amount of time last year, and when he was in, he wasn't scoring at the rate he once did. I think this is a massive unforced error. If I was the Washington GM, I'd have been trying to sell someone on the mythology of Tom Wilson and parlaying that in to a decent trade return. Let someone else make that mistake.

Too much and too long. Exactly what everybody said abut the last contract he signed. Caps seemed to be happy with that one.

Mathews tactics is definitely all about maximizing the amount of money he makes. A bit different from the majority of superstars who typically take max term.

Interesting.. as someone pointed out on Stauffer.. Matthews wasn't even top ten in scoring last year.. he had 40 goals tied for 14th together with six (6) other players.. so he was floating within the top 19.

Opens the door for Marner to get more if he's willing to sign 8 years. Seeing 14M tossed around.

Matthews can always fall back on his goal scoring to get crazy money. No one is close to him in EV scoring. How he benefits from linemates that allow him to float around into open areas all night, not really part of the convo I'm sure. Leafs need him to have a shot. They need Marner just as much IMO, so that will be interesting.

All these deals are concerning as an Oilers fan of course :) Matthews and Marner getting ~14M each? McDavid gets to write in his own number, and we will make it work no matter what, if he is willing to stay. Drai will be difficult.

It's kind of fitting that he washed up on the coast with the Kraken.

But only a one-year deal? Can you do that with a 12/13 forward? What IS this devilry???

Vegas going to capitalize on a player run into the floor under Eakins?

Annoying player, and will be super annoying if he finds a spot in the Vegas lineup.

Comtois released. Didn't play well in pre-season.

16-17-33 in 53 games a few years ago as a 21 year old. Kid was trending up well. Instead, was all downhill from there. Wonder if some other team takes a chance on him.

Saw this kid in Jr and team Canada and against us looking like an alpha d-bag. Figured he was gonna be a solid 2-way pest. Maybe Eakins beat his confidence down to zero.

Imma sat this one comes in just under the time limitation of the thread title.

Rasmus Dahlin re-signs with Buffalo for 8x$11 million.

That's quite the AAV. Is he really a top 6 or 8 player in the league?

Imma sat this one comes in just under the time limitation of the thread title.

Rasmus Dahlin re-signs with Buffalo for 8x$11 million.

Think Dahlin really emerged last season, played like an elite top pair D. Probably smart to lock him up. 5 years under his belt, it starts to get scary trying to sign him if he was to put up a couple more years like that closer to UFA. Especially if the cap does get a couple bumps in the mean time, and some lesser guys start to pull 11M+.

Scheifele and Hellebuyck both signing the same 7 x 8.5M deal too.

Guess should be happy for Jets fans. Lots of speculation both guys could be on the way out in the next year, but in it for the long haul instead.

Schiefele must like Winnipeg big time because 8.5 mill is a pretty cheap contract. A right shot, first line center that had 42 goals last year for 8.5 mill is a good deal for the Jets.

With Scheifele and Helley taking discounted contracts for what they bring to the table....when also eligible for 8 years despite accepting 7 year offers...I feel this says something. If I were in their shoes and really liked WPG (or any other NHL city), I'd still ask for 8 years LOL.

If things get bad, these 7 year deals will be more easily digestable for interested parties looking to acquire each guy....relatively speaking of course. I can understand Helley taking the money NOW however since teams don't want another mammoth goalie contract aka Bobrovsky situation despite his playoff performance last season.

All that's missing for WPG IMO is another right shot D who can play top 4 minutes as they'll be set for a trip to the playoffs

I think those deals for Winnipeg probably make sense for both team and players They're big enough and long enough that neither are likely to feel that they left a ton of money on the table. And for the Jets, they've had time to assess what the likely value they get in return on those two players would be - I assume they feel they can't get back what they lose in trading them, so better to make peace and lock them up long-term rather than risk watching that value dwindle as this season expires.

I'm a little sad though - I was hoping Hellebuyck could be had at the trade deadline for a Roloson-like run...

As a side note, I hate these general catch-all threads, because really, the whole NHL board is for signings and trades and such, and instead they always end up just dumped in here unless they're absolute show-stoppers.

And as a result, we have a ton of old dead threads still on the front page here!

Minor trade today, our friend Caleb Jones was traded to Colorado by Carolina. I didn't even realize he was on the Hurricanes, but it looks like he was only there for 2 months.

Passed through waivers earlier this week.

I always wonder about these deals where they could have got him for free but prefer to give something up. Certainly, it lets you know where you stand if you're Callahan Burke...who got traded but remains on the same AHL team!

Interesting that the Hurricanes do not have an AHL affiliate. What kind of team would allow that to happen?

Also as an interesting aside on this deal, Popeye Jones was playing with the Denver Nuggets and asked Joe Sakic for help in getting his son Seth into hockey (obviously leading to Caleb playing as well). So Sakic has known the Jones family for a long time.

The craziest part is the Chicago Wolves canceled the affiliate with the Canes because they wanted to operate as an independent team.
