Training camp contingency reduced.

https://www.nhl.com/oilers/news/release-oilers-reduce-camp-r oster-by-seven/c-335905260

The Oilers reduced their Training Camp roster by seven players on Thursday.

Goaltender Ryan Fanti and forward Ty Tullio were loaned to the American Hockey League's Bakersfield Condors.

Forward Dino Kambeitz and defencemen Yann Kaldis and Darien Kielb were released from their professional tryouts and returned to the Bakersfield Condors, while forward Filip Engaras was released from his amateur tryout.

Forward Matvey Petrov was re-assigned to the Ontario Hockey League's North Bay Battalion.

Savoie (LBI), Deharnais (hand surgery), Lavoie (LBI) .. should all be next to head to Bako.. they won't be ready to play exhibition.. still no word on Savoie's MRI diagnosis.. hope its not severe..

Tullio had a wrist injury, couldn't play exhibition.. likely a while before he starts up in Bako.

Petrov got better as his time went on.. he started to adjust to the size and speed.. I expect he'll have a good year in the OHL.

Fanti has a good future.. he'll be pushing in 2 years..

Oilers will finally deploy all the big guns with their top 3 lines, top 2 defense pairs and new number one goalie all going tonight

Kane – McDavid – Yamamoto
Hyman – Draisaitl – Puljujarvi
RNH – McLeod – Foegele
Esposito – Philp – Griffith

Nurse – Ceci
Kulak – Bouchard
Broberg – Murray

Campbell
Pickard

They better kick some ass tonight; as would be expected Calgary is going with a much weaker lineup:

Huberdeau-Ruzicka-Toffoli
Dube-Rooney-Eakin
Zary-Schwindt-Milano
McLain-Bishop-Duehr

Hanifin-Andersson
Mackey-Stone
Valimaki-Meloche

Vladar
Wolf

Any idea why I just get a spinning loading circle when I try to watch the stream on my PC, but it works fine on my phone? Doesn't matter which browser I use - I tried chrome, firefox & edge, but no go on any of them.

Edit: Weird, opening a private mode window lets the stream play.

JP's hockey IQ no better since he was a rookie. Frustrating to watch.

RNH still shooting at the goalie.

That Esposito guy is standing out.. quick and smart.. surprised

Foegel looking more inspired tonight.. quicker and more engaged physically.. last two games he was an boat anchor on his line with McLeod and Holloway..

Kulak looking sharp and quick moving the puck..

Bouchard looks like he's taken a step up defensively, more decisive, seems quicker too..

Nurse looks solid retrieving pucks and moving it out..

On the other side..

Huberdeau hasn't been noticeable.

Get owned by a backup. Nurse fighting AHLer. Kane and McDavid run into eachother in the neutral zone and McDavid gets up slow.

Great stuff guys. Setting the expectations just right

35 shots for and they're giving Calgary 19 blocks. Not watching but the play must be pretty one sided, as expected.

Definitely dominating, but acting like the goalie is our kryptonite. And choking on some golden chances. Oilers stuff ;)

Not good that Nurse has to fight the Flame plug.. don't want Kane doing it either.. seems all the guys that can handle themselves are our top players.. we need a 3rd o 4th liner that can do this type of crap..

Nurse just gave this guy 95% of his stories about his NHL career that he will tell for rest of his life. Other 5% will be about how crappy the Saddledome was.

Apparently Shore transforms into McDavid after the 60 minute mark. Looked like a wizard in OT and snipes a SO goal.

Skinner looked amazing in this game. Crazy to think we may have developed a goalie.

Watched the last 2 periods/OT/SO
Fantastic; Skinner, Benson and Holloway.
Good; JP, Demers, Broberg, Neemo
Bad; Bourgault, Virtanen

Didnt really notice anyone else.

It is time for the Virtanen PTO to end. I watched an entire period and didnt notice him once. Only noticed him twice in the third. After the game I checked the TOI and he played over 16 mins including 4 on the PP.
Bourgault I have on the bad list but in a diff way. He isn't ready and that isn't a surprise.

Benson has played his way onto the team with a good preseason. Holloway looks ready to go.

Broberg and Neemo have each taken a step forward and will contribute this year.

Benson seems to want it bad. Looks like he's gained a little speed as well. He's clearly trying to be feisty and show he can fill a bottom 6 role for the team. Hope he can keep turning heads.

Holloway definitely deserves a shot with the fuller roster to see if he can keep up with some time with McDavid or Drai. He hasn't slowed down at all in the pre-season. Not sure he can crack a top 6 spot now with the guys we have lined up, Hyman and Kane probably take the LW's, but proving he can jump in there goes a long way for him this season. Guess a call needs to be made what is better for development. 20+ mins a night in the AHL, or a bottom 6 role with the Oil.

Agree on Virtanen. 4th opportunity. Barely noticeable. Created 1 turnover leading to a goal, but that is by a mile his highlight of all that ice time across 4 games. He looks nothing like he did the last time he was decent for Vancouver. We have enough prospects playing well that we don't need to keep tossing him ice time anymore.

Holloway on the 3rd with Nuge and McLeod is the kind of 3rd line I want. Your team needs overall toughness, but the days of grinder lines are over. Colorado and Tampa are both teams with skill all down the lineup. Every line is a scoring threat at any time.

Bunch of guys cut today. Seems like it is mostly the "for sure on the Condors" crew;

https://www.nhl.com/oilers/news/release-oilers-make-multiple -roster-moves/c-335988196

The following players were loaned to the AHL's Bakersfield Condors:

Xavier Bourgault (F)
Seth Griffith (F)
Noah Philp (F)
Michael Kesselring (D)
Phil Kemp (D)
Olivier Rodrigue (G)

Two more players were released from their professional tryouts and will report to Bakersfield:
Luke Esposito (F)
Alex Peters (D)

And one player was placed on waivers for the purpose of assignment to the Condors:
Greg McKegg (F)

Tonight's lineup is pretty close to what you'll expect for the regular season opener against Vancouver in nine days, although Holloway playing where we expect Puljujarvi is interesting. Team really must want to give him a look with the elite of the team (or Puljujarvi is battling a niggling injury).

Kane - McDavid - Yamamoto
Holloway - Draisaitl - Hyman
McLeod - Nugent-Hopkins - Foegele
Benson - Shore - Virtanen

Nurse - Ceci
Kulak - Bouchard
Samorukov - Barrie

Campbell
Skinner

Holloway goal playing in the top 6...

Won multiple puck battles leading to the goal too. Actual hard decisions to be made. One easy one seems to be giving someone else Virtanen's time going forward, but org seems to be having too much fun getting everyone talking about him.

Virtanen gifted some mcdavid time. Mcdavid sets him up for a great shooting opportunity. Just loses the puck on his stick and leaves it behind.

We done with this dude yet? Need to start working on the real lineup. 5 chances and nothing.

Virtanen gifted some mcdavid time. Mcdavid sets him up for a great shooting opportunity. Just loses the puck on his stick and leaves it behind.

We done with this dude yet? Need to start working on the real lineup. 5 chances and nothing.

nvm. Benson hurt again. You made the team Virtanen!

Spanked this Canucks gang pretty nicely after the refs stopping giving Canucks powerplays.

McDavid's line not really in sync yet.

Let's hold off for the non-AHL team competition. Shore with a 3 assist night after looking like McDavid in OT the game before :)

I think Holloway has earned his 8 or 9 game start at least though. If he manages to grab and top a top 6 spot, awesome.

Yams and Pulju having trouble finishing stuff in pre-season so far, but lots guys that have an NHL spot in the bag have been sloppy, like Kane. McDavid seems to have zero chemistry with anyone so far, but he seems to always start that way. Hyman probably #1 of all vets because he just works his butt off every shift. Got the depth to just play whoever is playing best with our 2 top C's. I'd expect Kane and Hyman to have pretty solid spots, and other 2 wings rotating between whoever is hot on the team.

Guess we can expect to play another rag tag group in Vancouver, which leaves 1 game to try to see a full lineup. Man this pre-season was long.

I agree that he has earned a roster spot but let's not pile too much on this kid too soon. He did look exceptional, and will get into the top 6....eventually. I am guessing they start the year with Jesse on the McDavid line, Yamamoto on the Draisaitl line and Holloway on the 3rd. I would not be surprised to see Holloway in the top 6 by December.

His chemistry with Draisaitl and Hyman was evident. He looked mature, and now I am curious to see how he would fit in with McDavid. Smart player with wheels and talent. With guys like Guhle, Reichel, Mercer, Zary and Braden Schneider drafted behind him, I am breathing a sigh of relief that we did not miss out on an NHL'er.

I agree he's earned a starting night roster spot. But he needs to face real NHL caliber rosters before we put his name in pen. give him 3rd line time for the first 7-9 games. If he outplays, then he moves up. If not, maybe that's where he stays. If he's over his head, which very well could happen, then he goes back down. Just look at Drai's first season in the NHL. 37 game splayed, 2 goals and 7 assists. Some would argue he shouldn't have made it in to 37 games that year.

No one wants to bash the kid obviously, and he certainly has more potential than Perlini, Rattie, and all the guys that looked amazing in pre-season and bombed in the regular season.

But, imagine if Drai and Hyman were demoted to the Condors and played with Holloway on a line against AHL teams. That's basically the situation we watched last night.

Kid looks like he's gonna be a gamer, but we should be pretty experienced at this stuff as Oilers fans :)

Exactly. My comparison isn’t the player quality, but rather the pre/reg season contrast we see every fall.

I don't think you can determine any of those things based off of one (or even multiple) pre-season game against AHL competition. Maybe shot, but even then, it's one thing to get your shot off against a defenceman that can't skate at an NHL level and a completely different thing to get it off against one that can.

Will he be better than Yamo and JP? It's entirely possible, I think it's a reach to say definitively that he is today.

I was thinking the same thing. The shiny new toy syndrome is a tough one to shake but Oiler fans are addicted to the idea.
As usual we have someone with a small sample size getting thrust into a key role by some people. I think he has looked good and seems to be developing well. That doesn't mean he should be top 6 on a cup contending team. If the Oilers believe they are that they should have cheap rookies contributing but not being written in pen in the top 6.
In all reality he should be either playing top line minutes in the AHL or playing protected minutes on the Oilers.
