Are we the team that perennially can’t finish when it ultimately counts? Highlights all season but throwing blanks when the chips are down? Last year Game 7 vibes all over. No effort, can’t put together a basic pass. Pickard was keeping us in it but no one else showed up to score.
Illegitimi non carborundum.

At least in game 3 when we weren't at the races and clearly a step behind the Panthers we showed some fight, this has been nothing short of lie down and let us walk all over us. No effort, no fight or passion.
Take me home, country road
to the place where I belong
to Alberta, to see the Oilers
take me home, country road

Game 5 sucked. No question about it. There are issues, some of which have to be addressed and some which can't and we just have to hope here.
Obviously, it's likely Skinner's net to lose. He's bounced back strong after a reset before, so hopefully we see that again.
I think the team is playing a bit scared, and I think the coach hasn't helped with some of his actions. Benching Stecher after one bad mistake in Game 4 didn't help his confidence in Game 5 - he looked like he was terrified of making that error again. With a team that forechecks as hard as Florida, your defence can't be panicking. We saw what happens a couple of times Saturday. They need to get these guys focused on playing their game and making plays.
I do agree with the analysis on the broadcast about going up the boards. The Oilers need to tweak their approach. Their wingers have been failing not just to keep possession, but even to get the puck out of the defensive zone a lot of the time (some worse than others). Some quicker movement might spring the attack, but also a different route some of the time. Those shifts where we're trapped in the zone are exhausting.
I also wonder if the game day practices are necessary at this point or if they're costing us valuable energy. The team looked tired at points in the last week. The Panthers aren't skating on game days. The Oilers are. And it sounds like they're running full practices too - not just a light skate to stretch out. I'm not sure that more video and less skating wouldn't be a better approach, especially given that the team is really long in the tooth. Do all these greybeards need more time skating?
All that said, last year we had to win 4 in a row to win the Cup. This year we just need back-to-back wins. We have McDavid and Draisaitl. We've been pretty close throughout this series and we haven't played close to our best hockey. We've barely ever held a lead. Come out hard and play like there's nothing left to lose tomorrow. Take one in Florida. And then we play game 7 in our own building with that crowd behind them.
The sun hasn't set yet here.

100% agree and co-sign.
No one is giving up on a 1000 mile journey 40 feet from the end. These are professional hockey players TWO games away from the Stanley Cup. They're not rolling over. Florida is a very good hockey team, but they can be beaten and they can be beaten twice in a row. It ain't over 'til it's over.

D-Day (Bruce McGill): "War's over, man. Wormer dropped the big one
Bluto: What? Over? Did you say 'over'? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!...
It ain't over now, 'cause when the goin' gets tough, the tough get goin'. Who's with me? Let's go! Come on!...(He ran to the front door but no one followed him)
Bluto (returning): What the f--k happened to the Delta I used to know? Where's the spirit? Where's the guts, huh? This could be the greatest night of our lives, but you're gonna let it be the worst. 'Ooh, we're afraid to go with you, Bluto, we might get in trouble.' (shouting) Well, just kiss my butt from now on! Not me! I'm not gonna take this. Wormer, he's a dead man! Marmalard, dead! Niedermeyer...
Otter (Tim Matheson): Dead! Bluto's right. Psychotic, but absolutely right. We gotta take these bastids. Now, we could fight 'em with conventional weapons. That could take years and cost millions of lives. No, in this case, I think we have to go all out. I think this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody's part.
We're just the guys to do it...LET'S DO IT!

in 2006, we needed 3 in a row, got 2
last year we needed 4 in a row, got 3
This year, just 2 in a row boys. No more reason to play scared. We seem to need our back up against a wall to give it our all, nothing should bring that out more than the threat of elimination.

Pwned. So much for home ice meaning something. Marchand runs our arena.
First time facing elimination all playoffs on Tuesday.

Yep. I'm starting to expect that the Oilers just don't have it, with this core. They have two more games to prove that they have the desire to actually win the Cup, and if they don't... they're going to have the reputation as being perennial also-rans.
Terrible effort.

Yep. Just don't have enough to take a team through to the Cup.
Oh well... they have two more opportunities to prove otherwise. If they don't, definitely in the Joe Thornton conversation.

Put out a dog**** effort and receive dog**** results. Simple as that.
Oilers looked like they were playing a preseason game for 3/4 of that game. No surprise... you got clobbered.
Three dog**** first periods in a row. In the Finals. Brutal.

I watched every game of the 06 run anthem to final buzzer. Regardless of skill or what the score was. That team showed up every game and every shift and left it on the ice. If you go out fighting I’ll watch every second with all my heart.
This series, I’ve turned off THREE games (resumed last game) because the effort was absolutely pathetic and I couldn’t stand to watch. No hits. Couldn’t make a pass or carry the puck. Pathetic offensive zone. Everyone on this roster is capable of so much more. And it’s infuriating that they all have that deer in the headlights look hoping the game will turn their way. Guys it’s on you.

Coffey is starting to really annoy me with his insistence on playing defensemen on their off side.
EVERYONE is struggling with that, and Florida is exploiting it big time.
I just can't understand why he won't stick with lefty-righty pairings.
Ek - Bouch
Nurse - Walman (I know Walman is a lefty, but he's played RD)
Kulak - Klingberg
Get some stability back there rather than constantly mixing & matching.

It’s not like you can say we were almost there. Again - outside the first few minutes minutes, we never threatened. From the point Marchand scored the first (which was embarrassing for all involved, it just never felt like we were going to win. Such a let down.
And the officiating is abysmal. They let Florida get away with so much. But out PP is not working anyway, so whatever I guess. Ughhhh

look... in what world do you take out Kapanen for Arvi or Skinner? ...don't ever play 14 on his off side again. Bouch... don't start the next first period in a comma. Whole team... if you don't play physically, you lose against FLA. Show that you want to go to the net the same way Marchand walked past Perry and through Bouch... and you will have a chance to extend this to 7.
...this time, it's for real (isn't it?).

Such a shame Picks made some saves to keep it 2-0, but we refused to do anything useful until we were finally down by 3.
So now we probably go back to Stu, and we probably have to win the cup with Stu. That's probably the end of Pickard now for the playoffs. Give him the lamest possible effort to end his playoffs.

Difference in energy all around.. Oilers lacked it.. some guys just looked spent.. well is getting dry..
Over all the speed was not there.. both in the feet and mental processing.. could really use some more speed through the line up.. too slow to pucks.. unable to cycle.. weak possession.
extra day might help some of these guys for next game.. this was a quick turn around (single day)
If they go out like this again.. I think some of the off season decisions will be made a little easier.. and clearer..

Depressing. Home ice advantage and 2 games squandered. Backs against the wall 3rd finals in my life.
I hope the outcome is different this time.

Can’t help but feel this is a hopeless situation. I don’t think we’ve been the better team in any of the 5 games. Not by much if at all anyway.
Regardless of the outcome - whether they win the next 2, or lose in 6 or 7, the biggest failure from this group has to be going into this season with a Skinner/Pickard duo again. The boys are saying all the right things about their goalies, but it’s just not enough for a team with Cup aspirations.
And man - Bruins had 2 big trades with the finalists. On one side, Frederic for a 2nd, 4th, and a prospect. Florida got Marchand for a conditional 1st in 2027.

Agree on not addressing the goalie situation. Walman has been a great add, so it's nice that we did something about the D. Hyman out is really hurting at the moment, he'd be a difference maker in a series like this.
It's not over by a long shot, but I'd like our chances more if we'd have Broberg, Holloway and a healthy Zach Hyman.

I'm not sure but I think they are done.
Who knows if the Oilers will make it back here again. With that last outing it's been nothing but weak effort. Florida is so quick on the boards, so quick intercepting pucks, and smothers while in their offensive zone the Oilers have no answer.
They better have one, because if they put out that effort again they are done, DONE.
This chance of playing for the cup may never come again.
