Oilers in 6. The fact the Panthers played 3 full post-seasons and more of them played 4 nations, they finally run out of gas with the Oilers playing their 200-ft game from the past 14 games.

Should this go the distance though, home ice could mean everything. That final game would be here in Rogers Place rather than in a slushy mess in Florida or Carolina.

Yeah, that last game 7 was as hard as it could be. Not only are you fighting the puck bouncing around on trash ice, you have florida getting away with murder with interference. Whoever got the luck first to get the lead had a massive advantage because if how hard it was for either side to score on that ice. Sadly, it was not us.

So crazy that we now have home ice. I hope the boys can handle that excitement in game 1. Like to think they will. This team seems far more mature than in past seasons.

Moneypuck odds for the Oilers through these playoffs:

47.7% chance against LA
42.5% chance against Vegas
46.1% chance against Dallas
45.2% chance against Florida

From everyones favorite to start the year, to underdog in every single playoff series.

Moneypuck's start of season prediction (and many others were basically the same pre-season rankings)

Not to go nuts reading into it, but still an interesting stat

Oilers are the eighth team in NHL’s expansion era (1967-68 to now) to reach the Stanley Cup Final after losing their first two games of that postseason.

It feels different this year. I was a kid in the 80's and I just thought this was a thing that would always happen, and even after Gretz left we still won.

Then 2006 comes out of nowhere and hope springs eternal, only to tragically lose the series and watch the team fall apart for a decade plus. 2024? I was so caught up in the moment and losing game 7 was even worse than 2006.

2025 is different. Not sure if the outcome will be better. I certainly hope so, but even just as a fan I feel more equipped to handle the ride of emotions. If I can do this, sure as heck the players must be in a better place. They sure look like it on the ice.

LFG!

Good grief. Just got our costs for this round. Another 56% increase from round 4! This is insanity. This is over a 600% increase from regular season prices.

Even still, I'm sure there are a lot of people taking an awful deep breathe as their credit cards are charged.

It makes sense though. Not just because the NHL charges teams a lot for final games. The Oilers saw season ticket holders making a lot of money in the playoffs over the years. Sure, they're not selling out the building until after the first period starts, but selling 97% of the building at 6x makes a lot more money than selling out at 3x.

The only problem is it sort of breaks faith with the seat holders. No longer can they defray the cost of very expensive season and playoff tickets. Why would people pay top dollar for all the games when it's increasingly difficult to get money back for those you can't attend? It's a big risk to buy two seats for 4 games at, say, $1275 / ticket. Hard to sell at that price. Still, that's a problem for another day. For now, they're making hay while the sun is shining.

The real demons in all of this is ticketmaster charging hundred of dollars on after market tickets that cost thousands of dollars. Eddie Vedder was right.

Please do not feed the bears. Feeding the bears creates a dependent population unable to survive on their own. Bears.

It's one thing to say you'll pay +$1000 a seat, it's another thing to hit send on the transfer. For multiple games. Hypothetically, if I went to every game and it went all 7, that's $6500 for the two seats.

I'm not talking lower bowl seats here. We're upper bowl, very top rail. It's drink rail, which is in my opinion a real hidden gem as far as seating goes, but it's still upper bowl, upper rows. So can you imagine what lower bowl costs?

Interesting foot note for the final .. I found this on Lowetide site.. one of the posters (LateNightOil) is from Dartmouth, NS.. he remembered watching a junior hockey team (Dartmouth Arrows) there while growing up.. he said that the dads of both Brad Marchand and Evander Kane played on the Dartmouth team.. now their kids are playing each other in the SC Final.. here is the team photo.. pretty cool.

Had no idea their dad's played higher level hockey

I was looking up Kane's dad Perry to find out more on his playing days.. found this article from back when Kane was being drafted.
Interesting insights about Evander growing up.
Perry is also a boxing coach.. from the article it sounds like like Evander learned some skills at a young age .. you don't want to FAAFO .. but hoping kinda Tkuchuk does.. :)

Also learned Evander was on the Vancouver Giants Memorial Cup winning team as a 15 year old under Don Hay. Same team as Lucic.

Thinking the Oilers take the first 2 at home. Get a split on the road and then come home to win the cup.

I think starting at home is actually kind of a big advantage in this series.

Oilers in 5.

That’s my wishful thinking.

I’ve got my hotel booked and a refundable airfare will be booked shortly. If the Oilers have a chance to clinch in 5, i think I’ll go. Stupid prices at the moment, but whatever.

I’m only in Sask and will drive, but same thing. Booked a hotel downtown for game 5. If I can’t in the rink I’ll be taking in the atmosphere around the rink.

Ugh...Wes McCauley & Chris Rooney are two of the refs selected to officiate the series.

Fully expecting:

1. Soft early call on whatever team gets out to the better start

2. Soft even-up call if the other team fails to score on their powerplay
2a. Let everything go from the last five minutes of the first period through the third
2b. Maybe call coincidental minors on a random postwhistle battle in the crease for funsies

3. Brutal call in the third for roughing/cross-checking that had previously been allowed to go on all night

One game will get like eight total powerplays handed out, and the rest will be three or fewer.

Even if we split the first two games I am fine with that. Just absolutely can't go down 0-2 at home. Need at least one of them but preferably both.

We complain about it every year - but has the NHL ever said why they take so long to start the finals and stretch it out so long? 1 week from the end of the conference finals to finally start? 3 days breaks in the same city?

Other than the few Oilers fans around here, not many people are talking hockey anymore. And still 2 more days until game 1.

I heard a conversation on Dangle's podcast that part of the reason is for all the media to get sorted out, how true that is I don't know, but the conversation about why it was such a long wait led to that being mentioned.

For me the delay has at least helped me catch up on some sleep, yesterday and today have been the first two days in a couple of months I've not been falling asleep in the middle of the day. Just 2 more weeks of so of this potentially. I'd much rather be out in or about Edmonton, heck maybe the next time or the time after.

At least it kind of lines up with when it would have started if the other series had gone to 7. I think it's worse when you have at least one long semi and then still have 5 or so days off. This way it could be spun that the teams earned their break by finishing off their opponents early, so a little unfair to them to then push them back in to action very quickly after.

I do think the league must lose momentum though on viewership. You get a few more early summer days under your belt and suddenly it doesn't feel like you NEED to get in front of a TV and watch the game - especially if you're not a fan of one of the Finalists.

There is a lot they can market around though - the rematch, McDavid back in the Finals after last year's heroics and the tough videos of the team from that show, the heart-warming comeback story of the last two players suspended for PED use joining forces on the Panthers' blueline.

It's June. I have no interest in sitting inside and watching hockey unless it's the Oilers... and even that, I'm going to miss at least 2 games because I have other summer stuff to. I'll never understand why the NHL makes everything so difficult. Start in September, finish by Victoria Day. I don't think NHL players need a week between series or 2 days between games. They've got cabins to celebrate at. I don't at all care about the media.

Kind of crazy we could have had game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals at home on a Saturday night and the league said, "nah, let's do Wednesday".

Change of plans maybe? Tickets for games 3 and 4 available for $500CAD, flights are still pretty cheap, and plenty of cheap hotels…I can see games 3 and 4 for about 1500 less than just game 5. Actually $2000 less…

Anyone want to go to Florida? (I’m serious)
