Bonkers decision by Jim Rutherford to talk to the media about his two star players not getting along:

"Everybody has worked on it, including the parties involved. But it only gets resolved for a short period of time and then it festers again. So it certainly appears like there’s not a good solution that would keep this group together."

Not sure what his game plan is here - he's just blowing up their value by basically calling them both out as dressing room cancers. Would have been better to make the best deal he could and just be done with the situation, but instead does this.

And how do you keep either, never mind both, after you come out and say this?

He even waits until they've actually strung together a couple of wins in a row to have this interview too...it just seems so stupid, like there's no real thought-out objective here.

Keep seeing noise around Miller being an issue with lots of players. Think they moved Horvat because of another spat and thought they were better off keeping Miller. Trading Pettersson because of Miller would probably be super dumb, but I hope they do it!

I think after sewering both players publicly, the Canucks will see some pressure to trade both of them. Honestly, it feels a little like when they had both Luongo and Schneider and managed to come out of that situation with neither.

They did get Markstrom and the pick that became Horvat in those trades, so they eventually didn't do awful (although they ended up with nothing for Markstrom and all that's left of the Horvat return is just a Swedish prospect named Axel and a depth forward in Raty).

The team has almost certainly doomed themselves in to a low return now here too. I mean, Rutherford basically said that the split between the two players is making the team play worse...so that implies that they have a level of desperation to change the situation. That isn't exactly setting up a position of strength from which to bargain!

So funny having your team depend on these massive egos/personalities, how high things can get and how low. Tocchet and Miller were driving forces of their magic season last year. Complete opposite effect this year.

Honestly wonder what Pettersson would be doing in a spat with Miller. Guy seems like a quiet android. That's a big mismatch in personality. Although, guess you never really know someone from their interviews and shots of them on the bench. Never would have guessed Bouchard was a guy chirping everyone on the ice all night. Maybe Pettersson is a totally different guy off the ice with his Swedish posse around.

From the sounds of it, Miller's a guy who grinds away on everyone. We've seen a few clips though where he looks like he totally bails on the play or does things that would embarrass his teammates - like when he was screaming at his goalie on the net pull last year. I wonder if Pettersson is the lightning rod but the rift is deeper than just that?

This is why I'm not bothered by the GM going public. They've probably tried everything they can think of behind the scenes and everyone already mostly knows what's going on. So go public. Have a coming to god meeting within the organization and get everything out in the open. What's the alternative? Pretending the obvious is untrue?
