We were the better team. Skinner wasn't good tonight. Plain and simple.

...agreed. And 97 continually abused all 3rd period that I saw. Same script as the Cup final.
...this time, it's for real (isn't it?).

Ew. Caught the end. Wide open man in the slot classic to finish us off.

give up a SHG
give up a PPG

the team hasn't had a game like this in a while.

Easily one of Bouchard's worst games as an Oiler. Stu was terrible as well.
Those two totally ruined a great game from the rest of the team.
I have to talk more about Evan. He was SO bad in this one. Outside of his second assist, he was the worst skater out there by far. That stumble at the beginning, the penalty, endless terrible passes and poor D zone coverage (he and Ek were LIT UP in this one because of Evan't brutal play)... he was a total train wreck.

Agree.. Ekholm looked like he had to play outside his own position responsibilities to cover for him.. basically try to "out think" what Bouchard was going to do.. or not do.
Nurse is kinda the same.. unpredictable decisions.. I imagine it must be hard to play with him as a D partner.. even as a forward sometimes.. to give him credit he was getting more " predictable" in the last few games.. he's on a journey..

Weak links:
Stuart Skinner.. 6GA .. question.. why does he stop the puck behind the net.. ? .. its usually total confusion.. he's a turn over machine.. up the boards to an opposition stick.. just stay in your net.
Jeff Skinner .. don't feel a need to see him in an Oiler jersey again.. defensive liability O-zone and D-zone.. puck never gets out with him on.. plus an overall lack of speed.. I thought this guy was a "great skater".. ?
Nurse.. same old.. + a selfish streak .. dumb penalties..
Bouchard's defence..
As an opposition team you're never out of it against the Oilers.. they always find a way to cough up goals ..
Hyman gets his face destroyed and they can't even get a win with a 2 goal lead.. 4-2 to 6-5
At least Bowman and Jackson can see who the soft spots in the roster are.
Oh.. and Sutherland .. what a douche ref.. has anyone ever seen an unsportsmanlike penalty ever called.. when it wasn't against the Oilers? .. especially to make a consecutive 4 minute PP.. never seen it.. b/c Sutherland.. b/c Oilers.. Oilers slashed and interfered with all night.. like another rule book was being used .. that only Sutherland and Maurice were aware of.. so many pick plays not called

Agree with all your points. Nailed it.
Hopefully Bowman is taking notes on those gaping holes laid painfully bare in a game that everyone should have had pinned on the calendar. Most of the team was ready to run over Florida, however the weak links let the Cats take the win.

Skinner will play like that. He's a pretty good backup goalie IMO, but I don't believe he can be counted on to lead this team to 16 wins without needing to dig ourselves out of massive holes time after time.
Even with is recent hot streak, he's still only at .892 and 2.98 for the year - nowhere closer to even middle of the pack let alone elite (32nd and 35th respectively)
Any team with McDavid and Draisaitl will always have a chance. But it sure would be nice to not NEED them to set all time records just to get through a playoff round.

A quick exit like six months ago? He’s streaky but has proven he can keep things in check when needed.

Where did I say a quick exit? And "keep things in check when needed"? Agree to disagree I guess.
You believe the only reason we got to game 7 of the finals is Stuart Skinner. I believe McDavid and Bouchard setting records, not to mention Draisaitl and Hyman, had a bit more to do with it.

He’s not always a big game goalie, like most winning teams possess.
The media loves to wax on about calm and cool Skinner is bopping to music between whistles and such, but I don’t think he’s as calm and sure of himself when it counts most. His lateral play is bad.
This is the ceiling and I fret that it’s enough.

What’s funny is that Bob’s 5th goal was as “bad” as Skinners, but he’s a Vézina trophy candidate and Skinner is a “quick exit”.

How many Cup winning goalies get benched for a couple games in the second round? I can't really think of any.
Skinner has stretches where he seems like he could be that goalie, but the inconsistency is a killer, and when he's off, he can lose games on his own. He did almost single-handedly lose us the series against Vegas a couple years ago, and made the Vancouver series a very close call last year. He was great against Dallas, but he finished the playoffs at .901 Sv% last year, good for seventh among goalies playing at least 240 mins. He wasn't particularly close to the top-6 either. His career playoff save percentage is a woeful .894.
I was at the game last night and it felt like even when he was making stops that every shot, no matter how simple, had a chance of finding the back of the net. Bobrovsky was also bad last night but still made more saves.
The Oilers have been pretty good the last month, but it's not really goaltending that's getting us there - it's outscoring our issues and shot suppression.
Hopefully the team is paying attention and realizes that we need to AT LEAST have a better 1A solution if Skinner falters, because Calvin Pickard is at the tail end of a career where he's been a tweener or a back-up for the bulk of it, and he's not someone you can actually count on to take the ball and run with it and Stuart Skinner doesn't look like he will ever be a top goalie in the league.
I really don't want to be the Lindros-era Flyers, where every year we have a really good team that's felled by mediocre netminding.

Radio people, heck even some on here were saying the Oilers were playing their best hockey and they are doing all the little things right.
They had a bad game, Bouchard blew a wheel on the first goal, Ekholm just wasn't himself. Skinner let in a couple of stinkers and it's right when people say J.Skinner is wasting away here and now I know why that guy hasn't seen the playoffs in his career. Just doesn't do anything. Bad fit really.
At the end of the day, The Oilers are fine, they don't need to ship or sit anyone (except for maybe J.Skinner) and everythign is fine, just a bad game.
Too bad it's to those south Florida nogoodnicks.
The very definition of insanity is doing the exact same thing expecting different results.
Generally Disappointed.

Skinner is what Skinner is. He can get hot for a stretch of games, and then cools off and plays like garbage for a stretch of games. We made it to game 7 of the Stanley cup with him and we can do it again this year and win. Skinner played a great stretch of hockey up till last night, so I will give him a pass. He played very well against some top teams coming into last night. I blame myself. As soon as I complimented how good he was playing, his game went to crap last night. It is what it is.
We beat Tampa, Minnesota, Las Vegas and we could have beat Florida. I'm not going to get down in the dumps over it. Move on. Bruins coming up

Worth noting, while he didn't get much done last night, I have generally liked Jeff Skinner this year. He's a skill guy playing limited minutes on the third line, so he's always going to get the criticisms from people who think he should be contributing more, but I think he's been generally pretty good.
We're one game away from him scoring an important goal against Vegas.
I do agree that the team had some moments yesterday, and that several players probably would like a do-over on many plays. We have seen a few of those moments - the Vegas game had some too as we let off when we reached 5-0 there, similar to the team at 4-2 yesterday.

Skinner can be our Phil Kessel on the 3rd line in the playoffs. He's never going to be amazing defensively, neither was Kessel. I still could like to see him tried more with McDavid, but if Knob doesn't trust him, he can still contribute on a 3rd line and take teams by surprise now and then, especially in a playoff grind. Even with crap ice time, somehow Skinner is managing over 2 shots/game. Actually highest shots/60 5v5 on the team, 6th goals/60.
We overcame the usual crap we seem to do vs Minny. We overcame it vs Vegas. Florida still played with us enough to throw a lot of guys off their game. 2/3 in this series of games isn't too bad. Couple more saves and we had the game last night too. Florida had a total of 6 high danger chances all game, vs our 12. Was one of those throwback nights where every big mistake was in our net. Not to excuse the big mistakes.
I would kinda appreciate some other team taking Florida out next playoffs for us if I'm honest :)

Before the Vegas game the Oilers were the only team in the league not to give up a shortie. Now they've given up shorties in back to back games--both which were the direct result of players stepping on their own Johnsons (S Skinner on Saturday, Bouchard last night).
