I thought we didn't have any amateur scouts in Ontario? Lol joking; kid has a high ceiling. I like the pick.

Steve Staios did a little bit of scouting there for the team. It was when they were talking about Staios that Holland revealed that they hadn't had anyone covering that league.
Worth noting that scouts get paid a pittance...AGMs get a lot more.
Hopefully he's a player. We'll know in 4-5 years!

Good upside on him.. he was on the 1st power play unit in Barrie until LA sent Brent Clarke back there.. then Aukey was on the 2nd unit.. so his points were not PP heavy.. should be interesting to follow next year in Barrie.
(UPDATE: I checked his PP points.. 7G and 12A 19pts on the 2nd PP unit.. so 19 of his 47 pts were on the 2nd PP.. in under a full season.. he was 22nd ranked (22/100) for OHL D-men in Pts/GM)
.. plus he's a RHD, so there's that !
Some OHL highlights from this year..
Wicked shot.. looks exceptionally mobile

Looks like they've got Bouchard's replacement. Looking forward to trading him for two 2nd's in a couple of years when his bridge deal expires.

Some Scouting reports from various agencies.. courtesy of Staples article.

Elite Prospects has this description of the newest Oiler: (focuses on Akey’s defensive skills)
With his precise and powerful footwork, he can shadow attackers and push them to the outside, pinch on opponents in the offensive zone before they can break out the puck, and absorb and box out attackers rushing to the slot. Some of his best work came off his ability to anticipate players on the rush and use his stick to poke pucks away, as well as while chasing puck carriers in his own end.
----------------------------------
Meanwhile, Corey Pronman of The Athletic focussed more on his offensive game:
Akey is a defenseman with a lot of offensive talent. He’s a very skilled puckhandler and distributor who doesn’t shy from jumping up into the attack. He looks to make plays and attack. Akey is a strong skater who is dangerous in transition. Inside the zone, he can make tough plays with the puck while also having a hard point shot that can beat goaltenders clean. I wouldn’t call his pure puck-moving as dangerous as his transporting, though. Defensively he’s fine, but not as strong as his offensive play. He’s got enough reach and mobility to make stops as a pro.
---------------------------------------------------
Scott Wheeler, also of The Athletic, provides a solid report as usual:
A top player on a top team in the OHL this year, is a beautiful, flowing skater with plus-level mobility in all four directions. He can transition pucks up ice, join in transition, walk the line, and fall back onto his heels and edges whenever he needs to. I like him defending the rush, where he uses his feet and stick to manage gaps and steer opposing carriers. I like the way he sees the ice and joins the offence. He can run a power play and likes to make himself available as a shot option at five-on-five. His game defensively does lack a little polish and attention to detail at times, but there’s a lot to work with and his ranking here is an indicator of the strength of this draft (he’s a firm second-round talent for me).
-------------------------------------------
Dobber Prospects reports:
Smooth-skating blueliner who moves the puck efficiently. Potential as a top-four defenseman if he continues to improve his overall processing speed.
---------------------------------------------------
Recrutes adds:
Defencemen with Akey’s skating skills rarely last beyond the second round if they also provide some offensive upside. should be one of the OHL’s top-scoring defencemen over the next two seasons, and if he can develop his defensive game and put on the muscle he’ll need as a pro, there is solid potential in this pick.

Beau Akey was in and out of the roster this season .. dealing with a dislocated shoulder.. announced he is out for the remainder of season after having repair surgery.. he was considered a candidate for the World Juniors .. crap luck for the kid.. he was the best player IMHO at the Penticton Young stars tournament this year.. extremely quick and agile skater.. something our D-corp can use.
