I had Singher and DeBrusk on mute the whole game.. think its my good luck charm now! 😊👍🏻☘
Great game by the mule Skinner..
McDavid in on ALL 3 goals.. he's a Beast from Outer Space.. amazing.. again.. should have had a few more points if the other guys could finish.. notice how Hyman didn't even get the puck in with his stick.. McDavid just bounced it off his skate into the goal.. just like Gretzky did with Lumley..
Lots a yips on the defense still.. but big improvement from the 1st game vs. the Flames..
One downside.. keep waiting for Yamo to ignite and get something done.. you can survive without the offense.. but he's pretty ineffective in his own end.. cycles just keep rolling when the puck comes up the right side.. never seems to get there in time.. and/or can't win the puck and get it out of the zone.. and he never seems to manage to block any pucks.. offensively he just doesn't seem to be able to control the puck long enough to make a play.. gets pushed off too easily..

That line was off on their passing and the cycle tonight, I thought. Not their best night. I agree, Yams has to get something going there.

Clear goalie win. Skinner is the man right now, I'd say.
Oiler catch a break on a play that you just try if you're trying to score, and you're Connor McDavid. Man the Flames had the shots but the Oilers had some grade A chances. Nuge had at minimum 3. Hyman....jaysus another difference maker.
Bouchard with a strong game, I thought. 80 (MN...I'm not spelling it after a couple pops) and Barry were leaking chances, when Calgary had chaos going in the Oilers' end, they seemed to be back there. Skinner had the answers, though.
Khadri and Huberdeau non factors in the end, under 16 min and under 17 min toi respectively.
4 straight, this team is working hard, and that's a good thing.

We lack cohesion in the attacking zone most of the game, the little time we had any we kept the zone and pressured the Flames net.
Holloway did OK on his return, but he needs to get his goal soon or else it will start to become a thing. Yammo's hands seemed to be a bit heavy tonight, again he could do with a bit of a streak to free him up a bit.
Very minor issues, but we dug in, won the game without playing well which is always a good sign. Just keep on going now.....

and another thing... Is it just me or does Noogie put most of his shots top corner blocker now?
The last few years he's been a disappointment with his goal scoring.. lots of chances but just a muffin of a shot that always seemed to be labeled dead center on the Goalie.. and it hasn't improved.. it was frustrating.. I kept thinking why don't the pros just shoot a 100 pucks a day in the off-season at shooter-tutor just top corners.. so its instinctive and a natural reaction .. no need to think about it..
Nuge said he was working on his shoot this summer, looks like it might've been shot location as well as shot mechanics., he's looks like more of a threat now.. I think he hit another one or two cross bars again tonight?.. he's had a few this year already.. all high corner shots.. Good Times!!

That was a fun game to watch. Mcdavid decided his trophy case was missing a Richard? And I don’t know how you don’t start Skinner again. He’s been great the last 2. They might be worried about the optics of their off-season prize being the backup, but whatever - play the hot hand.

Always satisfying to beat the Lames. Even better that the game tying goal came from the corner on what would be barely classified as a scoring chance because it's such low percentage.
It sure is nice having what looks like 2 legit good goalie options for a change.
JP looks like he has found a home on the 3rd line with McLeod and Foegele.
I am still trying to figure out why the hell the Leafs let Hyman go. The guy just works his ass off every game. He goes to the net constantly to score the dirty goals, forechecks hard, wins puck battles constantly, isn't a defensive liability. Plays on your special teams and does them well. Skates extremely well. Is a great guy in the room and a great guy off the ice. I am sure towards the end of his contract maybe he slows down a little bit with how hard he works, I am fairly confident he will still be contributing reasonably well. I get it was partly to do with the cap and I am sure they had some numbers that said if they don't him, they can replace him with player X & Y but if I was running a team, I would want as many guys like Hyman as I could get and I would figure out how to keep him.

I don't think that the Leafs had a whole lot of choice on Hyman leaving. They were up against the cap and he was going to be too expensive, so they had to hope that some of the young guys underneath had the ability to step up and replace his contributions. I think that has happened to an extent in Toronto, but Hyman has been a great addition.
It's also nice to have added someone who isn't a total jackass off the ice too...

I think part of it is math whiz Dubas made a few calculation errors over the years and out smarted himself in a few areas.

He signed his top four forwards to really big contracts...that impacts what you have left to sign complimentary pieces.
Nylander held out. Marner pushed for the absolute most he could get. Tavares was an open-market deal, which is always going to push the numbers higher. And Matthews is one of the best players in the league. He was going to get paid very well (and will be even higher soon enough).
I think this is just the way the cap works. You can't keep everyone. For the Leafs, I don't think that they made a mistake with those four being valued above Hyman, and they had Michael Bunting put up 63 points in the #5 spot for them last year at a fraction of the cost.
There's a good chance they eventually lose Bunting too...it's how the cap is supposed to function. You can't horde good players.
I love that Hyman is here, he's been a great add. But I don't think it requires a bunch of schadenfreude towards Toronto here. That's misplaced, and the Oilers are going to have their own issues on this score as we move forward.

I do think he made a couple mistakes on there. I don't think you can win if you pay 4 guys top dollar. The Oilers are pretty close to being in the same problem scenario, at least we could potentially still offload Barrie and Foegle if it were required and we have McD and Drai are both discount contracts. McD, Drai and Nurse as our top paid guys, and really only Nurse got top dollar.
TO is in for a hard ride, unless they trade some expensive pieces, which they may very well have to do. Next year is the end of Matthews Nylander and Brodie's contracts.

I would say paying Tavares top money and dollars to be your second line center when he wanted to come play for you to fulfill a life long dream was a mistake. He was and still is a good player but I didn't think he was worth 11 mill back in 2018 and he's definitely not worth that now. He's right now the 5th highest cap hit in the league and I never thought he wasn't a top 20 player back then and he's definitely not now.

That's easy to say now, but Tavares was arguably the best free agent to hit the market in the last five years. There was intense competition to sign him. He was 18th in the league in scoring the year ahead of his contract, and he's 23rd in scoring in the five years since. Yes, he's 5th highest in cap hit, but he's only making $1.5MM more than 23rd place (actually a 10-way tie for 19th, including Seth Jones and Jamie Benn).
On top of the competitive pressures of being a full-on free agent, Tavares is also buoyed slightly by having signed his deal pre-Covid. That stoppage and the resulting flat cap have cooled salary run-up in the last 2-3 years, otherwise there's a good chance he's further down the list at this point.
Honestly, the biggest mistake the Leafs made was keeping Babcock as long as they did. Had they not had him, you might have seen less of a hardline stance from all of Matthews, Marner and Nylander on their current deals. They were playing for a coach they hated, so they insisted on top dollar if they were going to submit themselves to that.
As I said before, I'm not much of one for schadenfreude on this stuff. Most people around the league will look at the Oilers upcoming cap issues in the next few years and wonder why we went as long or as high as we did for Nugent-Hopkins or Nurse or for that matter, why we've carried so much dead cap space (over $3.5MM this year including buried cap hit) in years where we could REALLY use the relief (moreso than we could have used the few draft picks it would have cost to flush that contract to someone else...)

The $2.25 we'll get back from Lucic and Sekera (stupid buyout) next year will be nice. But Neal's $2M for another 2 years really sucks though. Let's hope that was the last of those.

Don't worry about it. It's fine. This is all fine. Bouchard's contract status is fine. He's a RFA after this season. So is Skinner.
