Never in doubt. Some teams are just better than others.

True squeaky bum time at the end, but a win with strong contributions from all. We were battling all the way through that, at no point was it easy, and the fight and desire we showed was excellent. If we can carry on that level and get netminding like that for the rest of the season I'll be happy.

A win is a win. Loved Ryan getting the hattrick. Koskinen should have been in better position on that last goal, but he was outstanding today, so I'm not going to rag on him for that. Even though the Panthers had way more shots and definitely were the better team, I still am not upset with how the Oilers played at all. The only way they were going to win is if they had solid goaltending and with some scoring going just right, and that is what they got today.

That was one of those games where Koskinen just looks world class in a goalie win and a filthy theft of a hockey game. Fla could have plausibly had 7 or 8 based on the quality of chances, the Oilers young D made some mistakes. These games do happen for Koskinen, but you just see more toward the other end of the spectrum. The key today was keeping it together early in an 18 shot 1st period, where most nights they'd be down 2 or 3 already.

Koodos to Derek Ryan for the hattie.

Hope Nuge isn't lost for too long, I don't think the depth is there to sustain if he is....unless goaltending is lights out night after night....not gonna happen.

Need to squeeze 3 or 4 more points out of this trip in my mind.

This is why Koskinen would actually be a decent backup goalie. He has the ability to really turn it on, but without consistency it would be better for him to only get 20 starts a season and not 40+.

Good for Ryan as he didn't get much playing time under tippett and took abuse for his play. 5 goals, 7 points in the last 8 games. Nice to see him getting success and helping that depth scoring.

Big game for Mikko. I am happy for the guy as hw deserves it as I don't think anyone has taken as much abuse as he has. They were the better team against Tampa but got lousy goaltending. This time they got the Superior goaltending and stole 1.

I thought Barrie has played much better the last few games. Good game against Tampa. Was alright this game against a top 5 team in the league. I hope it continues.

I thought Bouchard has really struggled lately. A few rough plays.

Shore had a good game and was able to help with the lose of nuge.

Take the 2 points and run.

Praying Smith saw mikko stand on his head and it will spark him. I am not counting on it but all you can do is hope.

Barrie has been much better, since the first Woodcroft game. Manson effect?

Still want to move him for Cap relief, but he’s been a pleasant surprise

Manson/Woodcroft must be doing something with him. He has definitely looked better since they took over. Contributing some points lately which is a huge part of his game. He still has some mistakes which he will probably always do but they seem to be less for the most part.

I agree with you on the trade. I am not sure if it happens before the deadline but more likely the offseason. I think as a team you can't have a Bouchard and a Barrie. In my opinion both guys are way to similar in that they are mostly offense and mediocre at best defensively. Bouchard being young and inexperienced has the chance to improve defensively so hopefully it happens. I think moving forward, you have Bouchard as the offense guy. Ceci who's been very good in my opinon, he is your all around guy and then they could use a more defensive guy to round out the right side.

Maybe I never focused on Barrie much earlier or his metrics since Manson got here, but I look out there and wonder why the hell he's on a pairing in important minutes with Nurse and on the PK for Pete's sake. I guess the answer is injury and depth....Bouch isn't there yet given his play, and there some partner rotation involved in a 7 D setup.

Rant Part:
Brutal penalty by Nurse to give Florida life with 4 to go, lazily sticks his stick in the guys feet, just dumb. He had a poor game, got caught for a break against in the 1st when he was chasing the puck way deep in the Florida zone. Then misses an open net from the point, all he had to do was put the puck on net, that $9.5M contract isn't going to be even near full value if he doesn't straighten out his defensive game, has all the tools, keeps nullifying it all by mental errors.

Bouchard was a freaking tire fire, turn over after turn over, his collapse to the ice on the McDavid back pass at the blueline in the 3rd for the breakaway was comedic. Got turnstiled in the 1st for a grade A, missed the open man behind him for the 1st goal against, last man back and he tries to do a lazy stick handle past him.. coughs it up for another breakaway.. If we had a decent RHD option he should be in the press box, or down in Bakersfield learning how to play NHL defense.. I think he missed a few semesters.

IMHO the best defensemen actually playing defense right now are Nemo and Ceci.
I wish every defenseman would grease out players along the wall like Nemo does, he does it all the time, its simple, doesn't take any special skill, just the will to do it, its incredibly effective.. yet none of them do it, even Nurse only does it occasionally.. Nemo does every chance he gets.

Lots of defenseman brain farts going off today..

Happy Part:
Holy crap.. Miko! is that you? Where did that come from? Man, he played well.. he made some amazing saves.. stole the game.. made Bobo look ordinary.. He's a freaking enigma.

D. Ryan.. first NHL hat trick.. Bravo! He had n awesome game, he's getting his mojo back.. looking like he did in pre-season. Real asset. That extra contract year isn't looking so bad now.. I was thinking he'd be bought out for sure.

Sad Part:
Noogie! Looks like a shoulder. faint
Hope its not too bad, he's been rockin' it at center lately.

Who draws in for RNH? McLeod goes to center?

I'm not looking forward to Smith in net tomorrow..

Bouchard has struggled, but he’s still a bright spot. Kid has little experience. I trust Manson in his deployment.

As for Nuge. Need him back. He takes away from our depth. With him, we can effectively run with 11 forwards.

Don't get me wrong I know Bouchard has some good tools, but he's playing awful defense right now, a constant liability. He isn't processing the game well enough.. too slow and nonchalant.. plus he's pretty weak, constantly loses puck battles along the boards and in front of the net.. for a guy that's listed at 6'-3" 195 lbs. he's physically invisible. I hope Manson and Woody can salvage him or at this pace he's not going to be more than a 3rd pair d-man. I think he's actually regressed this past year.

Nemo is playing defense much better, if we had a RH Nemo in Bakersfield I'd call him up and replace Bouchard.

I like Niemelainen a lot! For a big man, he moves extremely well. If he could become an every day, not flashy but just solid defensively guy on your 3rd pairing. A guy that is big, and plays big, physical, hard to play against, good on the PK. A guy that for the most part you don't notice him in a bad way because he defends well but once in a while lights up a guy with a big hit. A guy that gives you 12-15 mins of just solid play on that 3rd pairing. AND he is home grown, that would be HUGE! for the Oilers.

He brings a dimension the Oilers badly needed. A guy who when the opposition is coming into the Oilers zone, they have to keep their head up and when the opposition is trying to get infront of the net, they will have to earn that ice.
