Heard W. Foegele on Stauffer, he trains with C. McDavid, D. Nurse, Z. Hyman, and D. Shore.
He was on the ice with when he heard he was traded..
Should be a tight group, I expect good things from Foegele.

hahaha. Now it makes sense why we extended Shore so early.

Welp, hope this all works out!

Explains a bit, McDavid and Nurse would know all 3 of those guys well, likely vouched for them, and for Hyman's case helped him decide on Edmonton.

To make myself feel better about the future I'm going to make some assumptions.... There, done.

I like this development. I've assumed that McDavid is the Alpha of the training group and works harder than the rest, but he still notices who else trains like a star. I've also assumed that McDavid has been working with Holland and has identified these guys as workers, thus doing a bit of a job interview for these guys. I've assumed that these guys know they've signed onto the McDavid training contract and will get blasted if they fall off. I've assumed they are going to hold up to this agreement. This also means I've assumed McDavid has identified superhuman training as the key component to focus on this year in order to take the team to the next level.

Life is good!

Interested to see what they sign him at and for how long.

Fwiw, I didn’t think they would actually pull the trigger on moving Bear. I get it. But I didn’t think they would.

McLovin’ or Foegele, should be a pretty big piece to this team up front. If he can chip in 12-15 goals (he’s had 10-13-10 the last 3 seasons) and be what I’m going to call ‘Hyman light’ then I think this will be a big win (yep, I said win) for the Oilers.

Didn't know much about Foegele until we picked him up, big body with wheels and relentless compete, looks like a winner.

Whenever I have watched him, I've noticed what a pain he is for defenders. Really strong puck retrieval, possession, and forechecking in the offensive zone, and has a decent finish. Goes to the net well, and has a strong 200-foot game (which serves him well as a penalty killer). I think he's what we've been missing on that third line for a while, and I think he actually has the skill to play up the lineup if we need it and if there are injuries.

It's a very limited viewing for sure, but I remember him as a player who impressed me each time I watched the Hurricanes.

Now this is the kind of intangible factor that gets me excited - training bros!

While I no idea who this guy was prior to yesterday, I'm certainly coming around to the trade the more I read about him.

I think that speaks to the fact that most of us didn’t object to getting the player, only the acquisition cost. I think 2.75 million is a good price for a second line player and an upper end price for a 3rd liner. Foegele might be either in Edmonton.

You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you can get a lottery pick.

Also, this summer has been such a disappointment, there's no point quibbling about every little thing. There's so much more tragic moves being made.

The fact is, he made $2.15MM last year, so he was bound to get a raise, especially given that the team felt strongly enough about him to trade a young right-shot defenceman for him. It is notable that we're $750K worse off on the cap hit side of that trade this year - although I expect that Bear will play well and make more than Foegele starting next year.

You know, your complaint here (ironic as it is, as you're again whining about whining) would have more validity if the Oilers didn't always prove me right.

I challenge the team's direction because frankly, they rarely seem to be on the right path. They have made dozens of unforced errors in team management over the last several years - and that hasn't gotten any better under Holland.

He's not only making questionable moves, but he's also getting completely flustered when pushed even slightly on them. He's clearly not a great negotiator, and he's been completely exposed this summer on that - with all kinds of better defencemen available for much less than he paid for the used up shell of Duncan Keith at full cap hit.

I have to say, I don't really understand why people wouldn't want the Oilers to stop doing stupid things and right the ship before we run out of years with McDavid. I'd really like to see a Stanley Cup Champion again and it's pretty offensive how badly these guys have botched it.

But then, maybe as a guy who hates skill players as a matter of course, you think this really is the right course. If we could just add 6 more Cal Clutterbucks, we'd be in the promised land, right?

What would have been a NOT disappointment?

With the Bear trade? Or with the summer as a whole?

As a whole. What realistically could have happened?

As a whole. What realistically could have happened?

Keith at 50% retention plus a draft pick as a sweetener

flip the draft pick to seattle to have them take either Koskinen or Neal

re-sign Larsson, still get Hyman

Trade Bear if you really don't see him as the future, but recognize the inherent value of right shot D and win a trade for a change.

If Neal isn't a Kraken, put him on LTIR since he's clearing suffering from Long Covid and can't play hockey anymore.

That's off the top of my head, and doesn't touch on the bottom end signings.

You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you can get a lottery pick.

I really think the Keith trade occurring when it did helped the team this offseason. Yes. Retention should have occurred. I can’t dispute that.

But. Holland holds steady and doesn’t make that trade when he did, they protect Larss, unsigned, and he clearly wanted to go elsewhere so he bolts on signing day and then Holland is reactionary while names are already off the board. They likely don’t get Barrie at that point. Likely don’t get Ceci at that point. Perhaps they keep Bear, but let’s face it, he’s not a top pairing guy at this point in his career.

I’m in the minority, but I truly believe this d corp is the best we’ve had since the Pronger season.

I agree with you, I think the defense is better and I don't understand why many see it as downgraded much if at all.
Nurse - Barrie - they were a good first pairing. Nurse continues to get better every season so I don't him taking a step back defensively. Barrie played like he always does, great on offense, so-so defensively. I don't see that pair stepping back.

Keith - The Oilers had Jones, Lagesson, Russell, Koekkoek and Kulikov as their second pairing left shot. Complain about the Hawks retaining which is valid but Keith is a significant upgrade over those dmen. Russell, Koekkoek are #6 dmen. Kulikov is pretty mediocre and I think a #5. I don't even know if Lagesson is a full time NHLer and the same can be said for Jones. Maybe Jones is a 3rd pairing guy but not a top 4.

Ceci- I don't pretend to know a ton about Ceci so maybe he isn't quite as good defensively as Larsson but he moves way better and moves the puck way better. A year ago, a lot of people thought Larsson was done or a 3rd pairing guy sighting injury, skating and puck moving as the reason. So with that in mind, I see Ceci as a wash for Larsson. Lose a little on physical play and pure defense but gain a lot on puck moving and skating.

Bouchard has more skill than Bear, he has more offense than Bear, skates better than Bear. Bigger than Bear. Moves the puck better than Bear. I think he has better defensive awareness. Bear was the Oilers 3rd pairing dman last year because that is where his game was at. So they upgraded in that spot.

So at worse, Nurse- Barrie is a wash.
Keith is an upgrade over anyone they had as their second paring left shot.
Bouchard is an upgrade over Bear in all areas

Ceci is probably a wash over Larsson.

Then if they do nothing else and have 1 of Russell or Lagesson as their 3rd pairing left shot, it's a wash.

So I don't see how people can say the defense is worse. Jones was a healthy scratch and its still up in the air what he is. Lagesson is not a full time NHLer yet. Russell is what he is. Koekkoek is a 6/7. So unless you really like Kulikov which I seem to remember most people thought Kulikov wasn't very good, Keith alone makes the defense better.

What’s the upside? I’m guessing age?

Because it sure isn’t size. I’m often wrong, but I’m not certain his ceiling is that high. Not many key small defenders on cup teams lately.

I’m fine with moving Bear, but just don’t know enough about Foegele to be critical of the trade.

It's not like Ethan Bear is 5'7". He's basically the same size as Duncan Keith.

Forgetting that players grow an inch for every cup and individual award they win?
