3 years, 4.5MM per.

Does that block Bouchard from PP time?

Welp, I couldn't have been more wrong about Barrie's perspective here. Guy passes up free agency completely and signs a very fair deal.

But yeah, this signing costed us Bear (for old school hockey guy reasons, didn't have to), and also blocks Bouchard from opportunities to develop on the PP (doesn't have to, but Barrie needs that PP time to look useful, and Tippett is all about the top loading everything with the things he's more sure about). Also gives us Ceci who I would not be surprised to see falls back to being a guy fans love to hate (because he's not good, another big lug that can't move a puck).

Cascading consequences of doing the easy thing.

Can the best PP defenceman in the league really be 'blocking' someone else from playing on the PP? Should we care?

Is he the best PP defenceman in the league? or is he just playing with the best PP players in the league and reaping the benefits?

I actually like Barrie on the PP, but I think that the ceiling is higher for Bouchard - he can be great PP and be a better all around defenceman. He has a better shot, so adds a different weapon to that mix. If the Oilers gave him the reins, I think they do well, but now I think the default will be Barrie for the next couple years at least - minimizing his role.

Since Bouchard is a rookie defenceman, he's going to have his growing pains in the next couple of years. If he was on the PP - I think we would see the flip side of that and understand his full value, but without it, I think there will be undue focus on the downside of a young d-man, and maybe in a couple of years, the Oilers have traded him for the next great third line forward who can penalty kill...

Nurse got points at the exact same rate with McDavid on the PP this season. Our PP scored at a higher rate with Nurse+McDavid than Barrie+McDAvid.

If you take Barrie's PP ice time and give it to Nurse with the points rate Nurse was getting with McDavid there, Nurse leads the league in points (maybe wins the Norris too) and Barrie is in the 30's for points.

IMO, in the end, Barrie didn't do more than Nurse or Klef did in the past, arguably less. That's the luckiest ice time in the NHL for a dman, being a passer on the blue line on our PP that is run 95% by 2 of the best players in the NHL.

I'm glad at least we paid Barrie like he was largely just lucky to get McDavid time.

It's easy to argue that Barrie isn't the perfect fit for the Oilers with Bouchard behind him, but you can't argue the contract. If Bouchard passes Barrie on merit, this contract is very tradeable.

I really like this deal and it makes me like Barrie more for taking a discount to stay. I imagine he could be making more money elsewhere.

I like it too.

Analytics carves him up. Conventional media carves him up. Fans carve him up. Pretty wild after leading the league in defense scoring. I feel he's going to get a lot of heat over the next 3 years when he doesn't lead the league in D scoring.

Honestly, the AAV and term are less than I expected. For all those thinking he was going to cash in on a major payday (myself included), he really didn't. I'm curious if there were better offers out there, but this was a good fit for both the player and the team. Maybe he was just happy here.

We locked up the league's top-scoring defenseman for $4.5M and 3 years. Lots to be happy about with this, the term and cap were both right. It's not an anchor at all, and very likely we will get good value from this deal.

Did he even get to the point of looking at other offers? Maybe stuff is exchanged in secret, but no teams were supposed to talk to him or his agent until ~30 mins after it was announced he signed with us.

Since the Keith debacle was announced, this is the first thing that doesn't make me want to jump out the window. Can't believe he signed for 3 years, and especially not for something starting with 4. This and RNH are solid deals.

Love the price and the term. Don’t love his fit on this team. It dismantled the RHD. Ceci was a massive overpay. Bouchard may not be as recognizable as Barrie, but if I had to pick a depth chart it would not be Barrie/Ceci/Bouchard @ 8.6M.

Bear/Not Ceci @ 3 or 4M/Bouchard for 6M-7M has it question marks, but frees up money for a goalie or 3C. Unfortunately my tweets and posts on message boards were not heard. My toxicity only affects players and the management group does not care.

Debatable. The best lineup was probably right after they drafted McDavid. It all started going down hill an out later

I hope you're right and I'm wrong on this.

My record with Oilers predictions in the last 15 years though is pretty darn good.

Goalie away from dethroning Vegas from tops of the Pacific. They get this Koskinen for Kuemper thing figured out and it’s a legit shot.

Excellent deal, indicates Barrie wanted to be here for more than $, only 3 years, Bouchard has a good chance to develop without drowning.
