We are not good, but we are not bad. Very middle of the pack and I’ll take that.

The goods? The top 9.

The bad? Larsson and Russell. Time to bring in Bouchard/ Legasson or Jones. Changing of the guard. Shore line looked invisible. Never considered their ice time, but I’d say limited?

NO way in my opinion can Bouchard be any worse defensively than Larsson has been. You might get the odd offensive play out of Bouchard.

Gotta be something up with Larsson. His effort is just terrible out there. Sucks. Larsson-Klef was a legit top pair (mainly cause of Klef obviously) back in 16/17. Both guys just broken down messes now.

If Larsson is playing 14 mins like tonight, and not even doing it well. It's time for Bouchard.

Lars was great that first year. Then Klef’s issues started really coming out and Lars dad passed. He just hasn’t seemed the same since then. Love the guy. The game just seems to have passed him by in certain situations.

I think you are right, the game has passed him by. He's not a top 4 guy anymore and if he struggles defending, he doesn't bring a lot to the team.

Possible he just has chronic back problems too. Really seems like there is a drop off in his effort level this year. He at least would be going around trying to make life miserable for the opposition in past season. So little happening with him now. Just a total bummer to watch him.

Lars and Kelf were good when Sekera was the Oilers top defenceman, but since then Lars has been hot garbage.

If Larsson is playing 14 mins like tonight, and not even doing it well. It's time for Bouchard.

He may just not be as good. He had some injury problems a while back, maybe he never fully recovered?

He only played 14 minutes tonight, the least of any defender for the team by a ways. It wouldn't shock me at all if he comes out next game and we see Bouchard finally. Either that or they go seven defenceman and alternate Bouchard up in his spot.

I will say, given the Tippett love of veterans, I can't see him moving both Russell AND Larsson out of the lineup, especially after a win. I think they'll forgive the own goal and Russell stays in no matter what (although I'd have Bear or Lagesson in over him every night).

Fun game all the same though. No obviously horrible goals against from Koskinen, although he's not doing a lot to improve his stats. Defence was a bit of an adventure, but McDavid came through and top two lines looked really good. I'd like to see some production out of Kahun soon - still just 0-1-1 and only 13 shots through 8 games. Only guy in the top six without a shot on goal tonight - but both those lines were buzzing. 24 shots from the other 5 guys on those lines.

Depth could be better still - surrendered more than they created yet again - but hey, they scored!!! So we'll give them a break there.

I did think that when Neal moved to that line with Turris and Kassian, they did a lot better, other than the goal against of course.

My eyes told me they basically went to 3 lines after moving Neal to that 3rd line and Ennis down. Didnt see the Shore line on much after that.

I think we see Ennis out and Nygard, or Haas, on that line with Shore and Arch.

My eyes told me they basically went to 3 lines after moving Neal to that 3rd line and Ennis down. Didnt see the Shore line on much after that.

I think we see Ennis out and Nygard, or Haas, on that line with Shore and Arch.

Shore made some grade A bad d-zone cough ups in the 2nd.. likely why he sat..

How about Haas (as #4C) and Nygard in, Shore and Ennis out?

I like Ennis. Maybe he looks visually better than he actually is, or maybe it’s just because we are the same height and weight? I’m very biased on that player.

I like him too, I'd just put in Nygard to keep him active.. maybe sub Kahun for Ennis? Kahun is looking like the new Tobie Rieder.. generating limited chances..

While I don't disagree with you that Kahun has been underwhelming, I don't see how you change the first two lines after that game. When either of those units were on the ice, it was tilted in the Oilers favour tonight. Kahun may have been (read: was) the smallest part of that, but he still was part of that. Ennis was a non-factor on the third and then the fourth lines, so I just can't see any rationale to make that switch right now.

I totally agree with you. The Kahun - Leon - Yamo line is working. They generally have the puck in the other teams zone the majority of the time and are either scoring goals or generating very good chances. I said in another thread, I think Kahun is a bit unlucky not to have a couple of goals.

For Ennis, he's not generating anything offensively and making really bad plays defensively. I don't know how a person can justify bumping him up.

I thought the Russell goal was the dagger to be honest, I think Larsson is probably out of the top 6 of the depth chart. He should rest for a bit.

Super pumped for Jesse. He’s looking better every game, and if he can get a bit of stability on that line and pot a couple, I think sky’s the limit.

And that might be my favorite 3rd line we’ve ever had, or in quite some time anyway. Neal/Turris/Kassian out there you actually feel like they can do more than simply not get scored on.

And with the way some of our D are playing, if that 4th line is only going to get 5-6 minutes anyway, I’d scratch one of them in favour of a 7th D (Bouchard). Double shift 97 or 29 down there for those couple of shifts that they would get.

That was a fun game to watch.

Really liking JP on that first line. Has the speed and the smarts to keep up with McDavid & figure out what he's doing. His big body in front of the net has contributed to several goals lately.

Is Larsson playing injured? He's been terrible for most of the season. Very disappointing after a great first year with us.

Thought Koskinen played pretty well too - made some big saves early on to keep us in it. When is that other goalie eligible to play?

Side note to all the sad Larsson talk.

7/10 from David Staples tonight. For great defensive play and 0 mistakes leading to a quality chance against.

I listen to their pod every episode. So terrible. Bruce McCurdy is a train wreck. He’s got 30 cats roaming around his home and can’t turn the volume off his phone or computer.

Loved him in Office Space. Hope someone finds his stapler before he burns everything down.

lol! Never tuned into their podcast before. The idea did sound painful, but sounds even worse than I imagined.

I saw that too and I was a bit shocked by the grade. I wouldn't have given him a failing grade like Barrie got, Barrie had a rough night but I thought Nurse and Bear had good games, they got a 7, but so did Larsson. Nurse played 23:41, Bear 22:00, both were a +3. Larsson played a team low on defense 14:27 and was a -1 and he got the same grade? The next closest was Koekkoek who had 16:12. so the coaching staff decided it was in their best interest to play him the least last night.

I agree I guess that his actions didn't directly count for a goal, but the first goal against he over committed when the Jets guy went wide around the net, out himself out of position then was standing there watching the goal get scored looking around clueless. The only thing he does supposedly well is DEFEND and be physical. He had 1 hit last night and put yourself out of position on the first goal. So how is it that you are having yourself a good game when you aren't doing the only 2 things you can do while playing the least mins.

David Staples' bad hockey takes are only rivaled by his bad political takes. He's a simpleton.

He's also decided that he needs to be the defender of all things Larsson for whatever reason and so he's staking out a contrary position there. It's inane.

Larsson was weak along the boards leading to the first goal against, and he again came back towards the play but didn't engage anyone, just standing alone beside the net and watching the puck go in. He's lost minutes because he has been leaking goals. There was an Ehlers rush in the second period where Larsson was the only man back and he played the one on one atrociously. Didn't get the man, didn't get the puck, and Ehlers got a pretty decent scoring chance. I always think it's good to be a little cautious on looking at single plays - even Lidstrom got burned sometimes - but I think it was pretty representative of how he's played. He's struggling mightily right now.
