I can't say I have good feelings about this year. Last year they coasted on a historically great powerplay but were terrible 5 on 5. So what did management do in the off-season? They brought in a powerplay specialist who is terrible 5 on 5.

They added a lot more depth to the roster that looks to be real NHL talent. Hope that translates to better 5v5. Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t Barrie’s 5v5 slightly better than Klefbom’s?

I’m always hopeful, but cautiously waiting for the sky to fall. Every year since we traded Gretzky.

The forward group is in better shape than last season. Bringing in Turris and Kahun while getting JP back *should* solidly a top 9 like the Oilers haven’t had in a long long time, then having Jimmy Neal and likely Chiasson on the 4th line with whoever wins the 4C spot in ‘camp’ to round it out. I’m excited for the forward group. There’s no way Kahun replicates the results of Leon’s other countryman and friend that was brought in, you know, the guy that was the reason for our not making the playoffs that season.

Defense is a question mark for me. Koekkoek is an okay depth guy, Barrie should easily replace and even improve what Klef did on the powerplay. But 5v5 and the ‘ol PK will seemingly place a lot of trust into Bear not regressing and Jones taking a solid step. Do Barrie and Lars make up the 2nd pair behind Nurse and Bear with Jones and Cowboy the 3rd pair? I’m not sure this d corps is anything special. I do however think we’ll all be pleasantly surprised with Barrie’s game (theres my hot taek for the season).

Goaltending... woof. I mean... maybe one of them catches lightning in a bottle? Short season may help that but it’s also a pretty condensed schedule so any benefit from that is likely washed away pretty quick. This season is gonna be all about momentum, and we’ve seen Smith be a momentum killer fairly recently.

Yeah, I think best we can hope for is that there's a Roloson available at the deadline and we have some cap room left to grab him. Going in to the playoffs relying on Koskinen/Smith again is suicidal.

This is a better roster than last year by far. A young defense.
I'm optimistic.
Our division will be tough, even Ottawa, they have really improved.
6 of the Canadian teams likely would have made the playoffs this year, having the Canadian division will screw a couple of teams out of the playoffs (only 4 get in).

Surprised to see Marody on there, thought he had an injury.
Niemelainen?? Didn't even know he was on the radar.. surprised

I think a few of these guys are just to fill out the roster so they can scrimmage with two teams.

For 70 games the Oilers goalies were good enough that the team was in first or second place in their division the whole season.

The team for most of that year had 3 top 6 forwards in Leon, McDavid and Nuge, a few 3rd liners, then a whole bunch of 4th liners. For most of the year, and in the play in series, they had 2 top 6 lines, and 2 forth lines. They didn't have a 3rd line which in the NHL is pretty important. They had an amazing PP but 5 on 5 they severely lacked because like I pointed out, they only had 3 top 6 forwards for most of the season. This season, the Oilers should be able to ice 2, very good top 6 lines, each having an art ross winning, MVP winning, elite center. They should be able to ice a good 3rd line with a legit, good, 3rd line center. They should be able to ice a legit 4th line. Then in addition have real NHLers, guys who can play on other teams as extra forward.

In a league that requires your defense to have good skaters and puck movers in all your pairings and preferably those type of dmen makes up the majority of your entire defense core, the defense last year had 2 guys playing significant minutes that couldn't skate in Larsson and Benning. Plus 2 guys in Klefbom and Bear who were just OK skaters. The defense that had 3 guys playing significant minutes that couldn't move the puck in Larsson, Benning and Russell. Those 3 struggled to make a cross ice tape to tape pass on a significant basis. They had 2 other dmen who 2 were just OK in moving the puck in Klefbom and Nurse. If you look at the defense this season, they added Jones, Barrie and Koekkoek all of whom are very good skaters and all of whom can move the puck really well. So now the Oilers defense will have at minimum Barrie, Jones and Bear as very good puck movers. Nurse is an OK puck mover. So puck moving has improved dramatically which helps your goaltending. I could see Koekkoek getting minutes over Russell and if that happens, you'd had 4 really good puck movers. Skating wise, Nurse is elite, Barrie and Jones are very good, Russell is a good skater and Bear is decent. Again I see Koekkoek getting time. So now at minimum you have 4 very good skaters and 1 good skater on defense all the time. So skating wise, they have improved dramatically which will help them defend.

That goaltending had a real bad 1.5 week - 4 game stretch in the play in series. The entire team was god awful, the defence played as bad as they had played in years but the 2 goalies didn't come up with enough good saves. There is no denying that. But like I said, the goaltending except for 1.5 weeks was good enough to have the team in first or second place with a lacking defence and lacking forward ranks. The defence and forward ranks have improved dramatically. So I prefer to go in looking at the 70 decent games the goalies played behind a flawed team that was good enough for first or second last year and think they are capable of doing that again vs focusing on 4 games in the play in where the entire team played about as bad as they possibly could in front of them.

Fingers crossed.

The absence of Sheahan is already a positive as far as I'm concerned (addition by subtraction). Of course, the real question is whether the Oil's D will be improved enough to slow the bleeding that will come from the goaltending. Making it even slightly easier for the team to outscore its mistakes would be a fairly big improvement.

We still have Sheahan. He’s just called Patrick Russell.

Well, at least the team isn't saddled with both of them. In the end, for me it still comes down to how much improvement their blue-line corps will show if any. I really hope Bouchard proves himself ready to step up to the big league this year....

Sheahan was just miss cast as a 3rd line center. He's a 4th line center. If I had to choose, I'd take Sheahan over Khaira. Both are 4th liners who are good on the PK but won't bring you much offense. Sheahan will be cheaper, he was cheaper last year and at least Sheahan can win a faceoff. I am hoping Haas can step up and take the job because Khaira really does nothing in my opinion and at 1.2 mill is grossly over paid for what he brings on the ice.

JJ can be a player, he’s has shown it before albeit in a very inconsistent extremely short stints. If he can figure it out and play heavy he can be a pretty darn good 4C for us.

When?
He's going to be 27 in August. He's finishing up his 3rd contract with the Oilers. I'd be surprised if he is with the Oilers after this season. As a 4th liner, you should see your job as being easily replaced. If a team is looking to make a line up change, you typically see them switch the roster spot of 4th liner. As a result, I don't know where he thinks he has the room to continually bring inconsistent effort game after game and has been the case for 3 seasons in a row. As a 4th liner, you should be playing as if your job depended on it because it does.

Does that last line mean COVID? COVID-exposed? Quarantining? Minor injury? We're going to get a full season without injury updates, aren't we?

I wish the NHL would do what the NFL does. Questionable, doubtful, out, covid. Updated after practice. Simple as.

Apparently the NHL player agreement states that the teams can't publicly disclose player covid exposure/infections, so I'm assuming something along those lines, surprised at Neal and Shore, they have been in Canada all this time, I could see Kahun and Haas coming from Europe needing to quarantine.. That's a bummer for Haas, Shore (even Neal) as they may miss a lot of camp and won't be able to squeeze back in the line up..

https://www.nhl.com/oilers/news/camp-oilers-announce-forward -lines-defence-pairings/c-319960034

"EDMONTON, AB - Head Coach Dave Tippett provided the first indication of what the team's forward lines and defence pairings could look like as the Oilers roster report for Monday was announced.

Group 1 will be made up of these combinations:

Nugent-Hopkins - McDavid - Kassian
Nygard - Khaira - Chiasson
Benson - McLeod - Russell

Russell - Barrie
Jones - Larsson
Niemelainen - Stanton

Koskinen
Skinner
Wells

Group 2 will be made up of these combinations:

Ennis - Draisaitl - Yamamoto
Archibald - Turris - Puljujarvi
Quine - Marody - Cracknell
Griffith

Nurse - Bear
Koekkoek - Bouchard
Lagesson - Lennstrom

Smith
Forsberg

James Neal, Dominik Kahun, Gaetan Haas and Devin Shore are unfit to participate."

Does that last line mean COVID? COVID-exposed? Quarantining? Minor injury? We're going to get a full season without injury updates, aren't we?

Heard Shore and Kahun may be on ice as early as tomorrow (Tuesday), while Neal likely to miss most of, it not all of, camp and risk of start of the season.

Haas still quarantine from exposure, so who knows. Has he traveled yet or is he still over in Europe?

The one thing I will say is that I'm not sure there is any standout in this division the way Vegas stands out in the Pacific normally.

Conceivably any of Edmonton, Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, or Winnipeg could take the division if things break right.

I think Ottawa will surprise, every game in the Canadian League will be a tough, hard game, I think having a deep roster will help a team, lots of man games lost..

My assumption is Kahun and Shore are at practice today. Neal will miss most of the camp because I assume he tweaked something training. Haas obviously has to miss due to his potential exposure. So my predicted lines based on who's available today which won't shock many except maybe 1 spot.

Nuge - McD - Kass
Kahun - Drai - Yamo
Ennis - Turris - JP
Arch - Shore - Chiasson

My shocker is Khaira not making the team. I think the 4th line center spot is ultimately Haas's spot once he's ready to go. Haas is faster, more skilled, brings it move and is a right shot. He got better as the season went on. I don't have Khaira on the team because 5 on 5 he's such a disaster. What the team needs to do is improve their 5 on 5 play. The coach has said it, McD came out and said they need to improve the amount of goals given up. They had the a top 2 PK so the goals against weren't give up short handed. So as good as Khaira apparently is on the PK, you can't have a 4th line player given how limited his minutes will be, being an almost automatic goal against every time he's on the ice 5 on 5.

I don't think anyone at all is shocked that you don't like Jujhar Khaira.

With taxi squads, there will be a lot of guys who are part of the team and Khaira isn't likely to lose his job or to even get exposed to waivers.

My opinion has nothing to do with "disliking" a guy, it has everything to do with dressing the best line up to win games. They have identified an area that needs to improve which is 5 on 5 goals against and that isn't his strong suit. So logic dictates you should look for guys who are better in that department.

Anyone else think Neal might end up on Robidas island? Would be a great way to free up cap space for a Nuge resigning. Hmmm....

He's apparently in Edmonton and skating, so I'd say it's unlikely.

I don't know. Injury-plagued back half of last season, and now a vague comment stating that he won't be back "anytime soon" could be laying the ground work for something. Just spit balling.

Matty with an epic question today for Kahun at the end of this:

Asks Kahun if he's ever really thought about a reason why he gets traded so much and lists off all the teams he's played on so far in a short period of time.

A big welcome to Edmonton.

This has a feel good story. I really hope he clicks in Edmonton. It would solidify our top 6.

No, no.

The plan is for a team defense first approach, winning games 2-1 off the back of the powerplay and McDavid rushes.

Neal is on the ice for the first time with the main group and things are starting to take shape with the lines today;

Nuge-McDavid-Kassian
Kahun-Draisaitl-Yamamoto
Archibald-Turris-Puljujarvi
Ennis-Khaira-Chiasson
Neal/Nygard-Shore-Russell

I have to say that forward group looks like a group that understands what must win means.
