I wish we had played this team like we played Calgary. Aggressive and hitting. We played the way a small team needed us to. Usually we crash and bang and then loose pucks go in cause Drai or McDavid pounce. We are out because we tried to be fancy.

Yep. We aren’t a run a gun team. We played our best Hockey during the last ten minutes of the game. Where was that all series.
I could care less about the draft lottery. I hope we win, but I’m just tired of this nonsense.

It's the right thread. Just forgot to add that I hate that I have to cheer for one of 8 balls to be picked instead of cheering to win games.

Nurse gave that in a quote, that the game they played with the most intensity was vs Calgary. Almost would have been better if they lost that game. Their first game against Chicago was a clown show.

Overall, this season was a significant upgrade over many in the past.
2015/2016 - This Kool-Aid tastes like McDavid flavoured Drain-O.
2016/2017 - This Kool-Aid is starting to taste like juice.
2017/2018 - I'm drinking this Kool-Aid, in hopes that it's Drain-O.
2018/2019 - Another round of Drain-O, good sir!

Fingers crossed for the lotto tomorrow, not that we need it.
I do felt like we kind of overachieved this year though. The team is still thin in a lot of spots. Hopefully we can pull 3x regular NHLers out of this draft and take a real leap forward.

If the Oilers won, it would be a middle finger to the league for making a second place team, a team that had been first or second for the entire season have to earn a playoff spot.

Not that we need the luck of your crossed fingers? or not that we need Lafreniere?
A cost controlled scoring winger would be really nice to have. Left shot, so you'd have Nuge playing LW on one line, Lafreniere on the other. Yamamoto as RW on one line, and then you can run any of Kassian, Puljujarvi, Archibald, etc. in the last spot.
Failing the win, I'd love to see Hall return, but Lafreniere is younger without the same mileage on his body and MUCH cheaper (for three years anyhow). If the Lottery Ball falls in our favour, it would make 2020 slightly nicer!

Nope.
I don't want them to win the lottery. The Oilers have tried building for the future with magic beans for long enough, it's time to try solid asset management, and longer term thinking.

Unless I missed something, isn't a team getting draft picks, selecting a player and developing them rather than going out and trading away picks, prospects and signing free agents not part of asset management and long term thinking? I thought so.
So while it sucks they didn't win the BS qualifying round, being second in your division but having a very high pick fall into your lap is a big time consolation prize and would go a long way into longer term thinking.

I think it would for a properly run team. I don't think the Oilers are capable of that until they prove they can do it.

Then obviously you should be hoping for a lottery win, given recent management history.

I am fine either way.
The team needs to lose the fall back option of a top pick every year as the only step towards improvement they make. Yet another hyped top prospect might seem great but each time it seems to lead to wasted resources on bad contracts and trades.
Winning means that an obvious hole in the team should be closer to being filled, or at very least one more bullet in the resource gun to be used to improve the team in the future. The added bonus of other fans being livid is also intriguing.
In the end win or lose, the gaps in this team that most of us identified early in the season still exist. Laff wont fix this team just like every other top pick hasnt been the magic band aid.

Here's the issue though:
A) The Oilers aren't a properly run team;
B) The team is committed to keeping a management team full of bloated contracts and egos, but not actual talented management;
C) The management has put us in a situation where we're likely to be so tight to the cap that it makes improvement through avenues other than drafting & development less likely; and
D) We want the Oilers to win despite A, B & C.
So, with all that in mind, shouldn't we hope for a gift to try to help us overcome crappy management that is unlikely to get turfed despite their obvious failings?
Lafreniere would come cheap for 3 years and patch a hole that needs patching. That saves management from themselves, because you can't trust these guys not to trade someone like Bouchard or Klefbom from a winger if that's what they believe we need at the moment. That does seem to be our Groundhog Day as Oilers fans - the management constantly seeking to patch holes by tearing up another hole - often based on how the last 5-10 games went.
I don't think management deserves a gift pick of Lafreniere - but as a long-suffering Oilers fan, I kinda think we do...even if it's just one more piece of the puzzle for future disappointments when they inevitably trade him away to plug the whole at 3C or 2D or 1G, etc.

If the Oilers win the lottery, I'll laugh and laugh and then troll and troll. It'll be fun.
But I agree with Pi on this one. This team needs to be able to build a winner without this type of injection. A 1OA pick is just a bandaid as far as I'm concerned. It'll make next year fun at times, but history shows that management will be complacent and not make the moves necessary to fix the holes we have. The idea that we will just outscore our opponents regardless of deficiencies in bottom 6, D & G talent, works fine for the first 20 or so games in the season, but it is not a winning strategy in the playoffs.
I know it sounds counter-intuitive, and maybe just maybe we have the right guys running the team to make the change from the approach we've had for the last decade+. But I think the long term success of the team requires them to grind it out in roster development vs. these quick hits of talent. Why can't we have both? Good question, and something I've asked since Tambo picked Hall.

So expect like a Alex Plante type pick, maybe a Riley Nash. Those mid 10’s type of Oiler selections.

I would be very happy to win it. The previous management made lots of mistakes. I am of the belief that the team is headed in the right direction with the manager they have in place now. With how he has handled Bouchard and a few other prospects, it shows a level of patience and commitment to development vs throwing them to the wolves and praying they make it in the NHL. That didn't happen before. With how he has handled JP and continues to handle him, I think he has handled that perfectly which is huge. Their are still holes in the line up, you don't fix them all in 1 offseason but they are a decent team now. So being able to pick a high end player when already a decent team is huge and would go a long way to improving them.

I forgot about the Oilers rule where they made the Oilers pay draft picks to hire 2 guys that got FIRED from their jobs only to scrap the rule a year later I believe.

After contorting the natural order of things by manipulating the Play-in protocol so that big market teams like Chicago, NYR, and Montreal could get a free ticket, NHL Corp. is begging for a good Karmic kick in their collective balls.
The Quebec kid coming out to Edmonton as McD's winger to light the NHL on fire, would be perfect Karma ;)
